On September 11 there is a night run scheduled in Jerusalem only for women under the name JW Run (maybe it stands for Jerusalem Women Run). The run will be routed through the streets of Jerusalem neighborhoods finishing at the First Station complex with both 5 and 10km distance routes and an entire "happening" around the race.

Dr. Michael Ben Ari, Bentzi Gupstein and Advocate Itamar Ben Gvir have petitioned a lawyer, Dina Zilber, to work against this event. They say that while they themselves all support gender-specific events and sports and they each work out in gender-separate gyms and fitness centers, the lawyer herself, Dina Zilber, ruled to cancel an all-male selichos event last year that had been planned and scheduled to take place in Kikar Rabin. They quoted Zilver who ruled that a Municipality is obligated to prevent any event that is discriminatory in the public sphere and that Iryat Tel Aviv was obligated to cancel the event in Kikar Rabin due to it being discriminatory against women as the prevention of women from singing at a public event is discriminatory and hurtful to women.

They claim in their petition that being discriminatory against men should be treated with the same severity as discrimination against women. Iryat Yerushalayim must cancel this event that discriminates against men in the public sphere.

The 3 say that if their request will be ignored, they will petition the courts on the matter.

This always bothered me about the fight against discrimination. With no separation of Shul and State in Israel, there is no clear line of when something is discriminatory and when it is not. If you fight against discrimination and think public events should not, or need not, be gender specific or gender-separate, eventually that can easily lead to banning the mechitza in shul, to use an extreme example. If it is illegal for the State to fund events and organizations that make discriminatory events, how can they support shuls or yeshivas or girls schools or anything that is gender-specific that has to do with the religious community.

This petition by Ben-Gvir is a good example of that. I have no problem with a separate race for women, even if I don't see the need. Also, there are mens retreats and womens retreats that happen all the time, shiurim and events for men or for women only that are often sponsored by Municipal cultural offices, and the like. Those are all at risk. I am not sure where the line should be drawn, but I see nothing wrong with events for men only or for women only - and it is up to me and everyone else to decide whether or not to participate. When is it called discrimination and when is it not is very unclear.

And with Ben Gvir's petition - does he want them to allow men to run in the race or does he want the race canceled? I know he just wants to make a point and not actually get men  to run in it or get it cancelled. Meaning, if Dina Zilber picks up the baton and fights City Hall to get the event changed, will Ben Gvir run in the race?

What did our grandfathers pray for? For pubs in Tel Aviv? For the promenade in Haifa? What did they sit and cry over? Over the desolate Temple Mount.

here is a message I received, and am waiting for a response from the police.
Kobi Bremer: this morning at the entrance to the Bet Shemesh police station was a haredi man named Mordechai Bloi. He wanted to enter the police station to complain about a break-in. The guard at the entrance screamed with profanity and said to get out and that he has orders from the commander of the station to not let haredim into the station. And he did not let him in. I called the operator fo the station and asked how it is possible to not let a Jew in to file a complaint. The policewoman called the office of the commander and was told that they are not letting haredim into the station. 
Everything is recorded, and obviously we have the recording. 
The police must throw out such people from within it. I am going to the media about this. If the racism is even by the commanders office, where should residents turn to file complaints. Despicable. I am disgusted by the great shock that I have seen by you.. and I am not religious, not haredi, just a Jew, though it seems this is a bad word for the police. The police even seem to have a good relationship with the Haredi community in Bet Shemesh (not including the extremist crazies in RBS B). Despicable if true. If that is actually the standing orders, someone there needs to be relieved of duty.

MK Ahmed Tibi used his time at the Knesset podium to talk about how Ben-Ari learned his racist attitude from Rabbi Meir Kahane, whose picture he then proceeded to tear up, throw to the ground and step on. Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin was yelling at Tibi for breaking the rules, and then ben-Ari and others began yelling, with Tibi yelling back...




For the record, I don't believe tearing up or burning books is ever a good idea. At least not in public. Whether he was right or wrong for doing it, it is bad PR. if you don't like the book you receive in the mail, toss it in the trash, burn it or rip it up in private. Doing it in front of the press just makes you look like a neanderthal.

Interestingly, MK Michael Ben-Ari recently proposed that the name of a city street in Ashqelon be changed.

Ben-Ari proposed that the name of Rabin Street in Ashqelon be changed to Moshe Ami street.

Moshe Ami was the recent victim in Ashqelon of a rocket attack from Gaza. Yitzchak Rabin had "promised" after Oslo that they would never dare shoot rockets at Israel from Gaza.

Considering how many rockets have been shot at us form Gaza, Ben-Ari felt it appropriate to rename the street after a local victim rather than after Yitzchak Rabin.

Even more interestingly, someone, a local activist, filed a complaint against Ben-Ari with the Knesset requesting he be sanctioned for harming democracy. Carmel Noy, the activist who filed the complaint, wrote to Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin saying that (briefly):

1. The memory of Yitzchak Rabin is not specifically of him, but of the assassination and of the incitement and violence preceding it. Removing his name from different sites is an attempt to blur the discussion of democracy and give anti-democratic forces more strength.
2. Yitzchak Rabin was a general, chief of staff, defense minister, prime minister and filled many roles in the building of Israel, and does not encapsulate itself in one statement from one agreement at Oslo. Ariel Sharon did more than just the disengagement, and Menachem Begin did more than just give Egypt the entire Sinai, and Moshe Dayan did much more than just err in the Yom Kippur war. Even without agreeing with what he did, limiting his entire memory to just one thing is narrow-minded and indicates demagogic though.
3. Other prime ministers have run the country since Yitzchak Rabin, and you cannot blame him for everythign that has happened since. Had he not been murdered and been able to continue his work, maybe his promise would have been true. Many prime ministers have ruled since, each effecting changes along the way, and he cannot be blamed for everything since.

Just a month ago, MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari and Itamar Ben Gvir brought a group of 50 Sudanese refugees from South tel Aviv to Ramat Aviv, North Tel Aviv, exclusive swimming pool for a day of fun. They paid each refugee 50 NIS, along with sponsoring their entrance fee and a bathing suit, and brought them to enjoy a day of swimming.

The idea was to show how the leftists want to protect the refugees, but only "over there" in South Tel Aviv, but they would be hypocritically racist when the refugees would show up in their neighborhoods. The stunt worked, and the locals all bolted from the pool when the refugees showed up. The refugees had a fun time, and the leftists tried turning it around and complaining that Ben-Ari had made cynical use and took advantage of the poor refugees.

Now, the leftists of North Tel Aviv have filed a complaint against MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari, Baruch Marzel and Itamar Ben-Gvir and want them to stand trial for taking advantage of the refugees in their cynical use in creating a provocation by the swimming pool.

The complaint says that their creating a private army in South Tel Aviv puts every Sudanese refugee in danger and automatically turns each one into a suspect.

They go on and on in their complaint about the provocation, the cynical use and taking advantage of these poor refugees, the discrimination, and various other ways that the trio flaunt the law.

In response, Ben-Gvir said that after the successful swimming lesson in the Gordon Pool, I would be happy to teach a course in democracy to the leftists for free. Without even waiting for the Knesset, Peace Now had already created a Facebook page calling for a boycott of products made in the settlements.

Baruch Marzel added that you can always count on the Left to display their hypocrisy. While crying out for the freedom of expression of the enemy, they try to shut the mouths of the Right who conduct legitimate actions.
