brilliant move Yinon Magal

I have been keeping an eye on the Strauss-Channel 14 situation with some interest.

Strauss decided to stop advertising on Channel 14 after one of their panelists expressed his opinion that Yigal Amir should not be serving a life sentence but should be let out to some applause. Even though Channel 14 censured the advocate, Strauss pulled their advertising from the station.

What I find amazing is that somehow Yinon Magal turned it into an ideological battle with Strauss being against all the viewers of Channel 14 and their viewers have bought into it and many are looking for ways to boycott Strauss products. Magal took a consumer issue of losing a big client and its advertising money and turned it into an issue of they discount and dismiss all our viewers because we support the reforms and the government, etc...and the people, many of them, bought into it.

Personally, I dont see why I should care where they do or dont advertise. I wish nobody would advertise on any station. On the internet whenever possible I skip the ads. I do not have a television so I dont watch Channel 14 just like I dont watch Channel 11, 12, 13 or whatever other channels are you there. On the internet I get my news fairly equally from all the sources, checking both conservative and liberal sites fairly equally to keep abreast of the news. And no, I dont want to see any companies advertisements.

According to Magal, we need to be upset that we suddenly cant see Strauss's advertisements - I personally wish all the companies would stop advertising on all the channels (that would mean less programming, etc, I know, but I still dont have to like the ads and can wish for them to all go away). Yet people who skip ads whenever possible are suddenly fighting because a company stopped advertising. And they have been led to believe they are fighting a moral battle, when it is just Channel; 14 upset at the loss of ad revenue. Brilliant move by Yinon Magal.

separate swimming pilot in nature begins next week

As announced a few months ago, Minister Idit Silman has decided to run a pilot arranging separate swimming hours at some springs around Israel, to be more accessible to the religious public, the religious hikers. I guess depending on the results of the pilot the program will either be expanded or cut...

Anyway, that pilot is starting next week after a couple months of planning.

Minister of Environmental Protection Idit Silman that as of next week two springs will be designated for separate swimming, but it will not affect the general public, as it will be after the official access hours have finished for the day.

The two springs where the pilot will be running are Ein Hanya, located in the Judean Hills outside of Jerusalem, and Einot Tzukim, located in the northwestern area of the Dead Sea.

I think we only have partial information, as far as I can find from the information publicized, but here is what we know so far as to how this will work.

These two springs have normal operating hours of 8am until 5pm, after which they officially close. So as not to affect the general public, those hours will continue to be open to the general public. Two days a week, after those hours, the springs will be open to the religious public with separate swimming.

On Thursdays Ein Hanya hours will be expanded for the general public until 7:30pm (during the month of August) and on Sundays and Wednesdays Ein Hanya will be open from 5-8pm only to separate swimming.

Einot Tzukim seems to have a different issue with the wildlife of the area enjoying the spring in the evening, so separate hours there will be available early in the morning instead. On Wednesday and Thursday mornings, during the month of August, the spring will be open for separate swimming between the hours of 6:30-8am.

What we dont know, or what I dont know, and dont see specified in the information provided, is how the separate swimming will work. Will half the time be allocated for men and half the time for women? Will it be one day for men and one day for women? Will it be enforced somehow with someone official there making sure people dont make trouble and women swim when it is set for women and men when set for men or will it be an honor system of sorts?

I have no problem with this if they can make it work without being a disturbance. As I said, I dont get how the separate swimming will work, and I dont see how a religious family out for a trip can benefit much from this. Of course if it is a group of just men or just women going out to enjoy the spring that will work, but a religious family out hiking and only the men or only the women being allowed to go in does not seem like much of a benefit or much of an attraction.

According to Israel Hayom, some organizations have already sent warning letters and are saying they will petition the Supreme Court over this...we'll see what happens with that as it progresses...

who is clapping?

I want to know who are all those people clapping at the suggestion that Yigal Amir should be released... the Channel 14 journalist making the suggestion bothers me less - he is paid to be provocative and bring in the viewers..

Interesting Psak: camp abroad, in southern Israel

With the yeshiva world's bein hazmanim upon us, an interesting question arose.

It is common in Israel for yeshivas to arrange "camps" for their students for a portion of the vacation. They will organize a trip to a campus somewhere, stay a week or 10 days, have a learning schedule interspersed with hikes, interesting speakers, barbecues, singers, performers, and other events..

According to Hamechadesh, a yeshiva arranged a trip to a campus in Miztpe Ramon, down south. They got a good deal and it is a place with excellent views and surroundings, so they were happy with the arrangements.

One of the staff members raised the issue that Mitzpe Ramon is considered questionable if it is included in halachic Eretz Yisrael or if it is considered out of the borders and part of chutz laaretz. It is a matter of dispute, and its halachic status is considered questionable. This staff member asked how could the yeshiva arrange to take the boys out of halachic eretz yisrael for no good reason, no halachic justification, just for camp and a good time, and additionally among the boys would be kohanim, for whom leaving Eretz Yisrael is halachically even more problematic?!

Interesting question, even though as a kid I might think the guy trying to ruin our camp is just a douche..

The question was presented to Rav Yitzchak Zilbershtein, rav of Ramat Elchonon neighborhood of Bnei Braq. The question is what to do about this issue:
On the one hand, this is considered leaving Israel (if it is) for a mitzva, as the boys need to re-energize for the coming zman. Additionally they might not be able to find another location to relocate to at all, let alone at a reasonable price and if they cant go to the original location they might have to cancel the whole thing.

On the other hand, how can they go to Mitzpe Ramon and teach the boys that a "safek issur" can be ignored or dismissed?

Rav Zilbershtein discussed the various aspects of the issue, bringing the various opinions as to the halachic status of Mitzpe Ramon and concluded that it is indeed a real safek if it is Eretz Yisrael or not. He then also discussed the issue of leaving Eretz Yisrael, when it is allowed and when not. Being that it is allowed to leave for the purpose of a mitzva and this vacation for refreshing and re-energizing to learn is a mitzva, so even though initially they perhaps should not go to Mitzpe Ramon, after it was already reserved in error and they signed a contract, and it is a safek, and it is close to Eretz Yisrael rather than very distant, they can be lenient and keep the reservation.

Rav Zilbershtein added though that it is worthwhile to make it a lechatchila allowed trip and not just a bdieved. How can they do that? If they were to arrange shiurim and invite the local community, then it would be considered leaving to teach Torah which is allowed lechatchila. And they should have shiurim on these very issues - the status of Mitzpe Ramon, the issue of leaving eretz yisrael, etc among other topics..

Rav Zilbershtein concluded saying that nowadays it is common for people to travel abroad to vacation without even asking a rav if it is allowed. It is prohibited to leave Israel unless it is for one of a few specific reasons, and someone who is not careful about this can be considered a "mumar ldavar echad" - someone who intentionally violates a specific torah commandment and is not trustworthy in some matters because of it. That is in addition to all sorts of other problems that occur, such as improper environments and seeing immodest dress and behavior in the airports and abroad, and they can defile the eyes of the person and his limbs...
