Rishus Cold Seltzer - Tweet of the Day

This was a great thread but I was not sure what to embed here, as the original tweet was deleted. I picked the follow-up tweet that had the most info - this involved a few tweeters including David Bashevkin... basically regarding a video of a fellow talking about his simple desire to just have a daf gemara to learn with a "rishus cold seltzer". "Rishus cold" is like wicked cold. The simple pleasures in life...

Likud cutting off nose to spite face

Renewing the law for Judea and Samaria [Jewish] residents to be treated as equal citizens for another five years is supposed to happen, but in this crazy coalition we have no idea if it will or wont. And the Opposition should be supporting the bill, as it is a consensus bill and they have supported it int he past and bills like these are generally supported by the Opposition, but they are making sounds of not supporting it so they can try to collapse the government.

Interestingly, if the bill does not pass, one of the ways Judea and Samaria residents will be affected is by not being allowed to vote in upcoming elections.

If the government falls because the Opposition refuses to support the bill and we go to new elections, we could very well see a scenario in which we go to new elections but hundreds of thousands of residents of Judea and Samaria will not be able to vote, thus taking away hundreds of thousands of votes from the Likud and from Smotritch and Ben Gvir and even some from the Haredi parties.

I would think that it would be in the interest of the Likud and the other Opposition parties to support this bill. If they do not, it will directly impact their ability to win the next elections they wish to bring about.

I am not sure how this law exactly works. Justice Minister Gideon Saar said earlier today that even if it will not pass he will make sure they are able to vote. If the law does not allow them to I am not sure what his workaround would be, so maybe the law has some built in workarounds. I dont know but it seems like a funny scenario that could come out of the Likud's continued refusal to support. The Likud might very well be biting the hand that feeds it. It might be cutting off its nose to spite its face.

some of this sounds like "OK Boomer" - our music, back in the day, was great and inspirational but today's music isnt lasting and is just fleeting entertainment... and some sounds very judgy as he decides who has yirat shamayim and who doesnt... but still interesting

Chumra of the Day

The sign says they have arranged mehudar milk with no concern of shmitta issues? what shmitta issues might there be with milk? The cows might have been fed grains or grasses that were affected by shmitta. They, whiever they are, have arranged the milking of cows who were only fed grains and produce harvested in the sixth year, clear of any shmitta concerns so the milk they produced is also clear of shmitta concerns. Additionally the cows have not had surgical procedures done on them to minimize any concern of treifas.

I have never heard of this chumra before, and this is my fourth shmitta cycle in Israel. Ar first I thought it might be a joke, but I am told it is not.

Picture of the Day

“We are destined to live together”

The Palestinian flag flies side by side next to the Israeli flag today in a new campaign from an organization called Mechazkim in response to a proposed law that will ban the display of Palestinian flags in schools.

(credit to Ittay Flescher)

The mayor of Ramat Gan, Carmel Shama Cohen, does not approve of this display but said it is a private advertisement on the side of a private building and there is nothing he can do about it as it is all fully legal. What he will do in response, he said, is add many more Israeli flags and banners in support of Israel and the IDF

UPDATE:

The PLO flag was taken down shortly after. I dont know how the mayor got it done but it seems he convinced the advertising agency responsible that it is incitement and traumatic for many, even though at first he said it is fully legal and nothing he could do

not the inspiring sports story that brought tears to your eyes

Haaretz has an interesting story about a young lady who couldnt play basketball on her team.

11 year old kibbutznik Ayala Lavin plays on the Hapoel Mateh Yehuda boys basketball team. The league allows girls to play on boys teams with some limitations.

In a game against Elitzur Efrat, the Efrat team protested her presence and said they wouldnt play against Hapoel Mateh Yehuda with Yamin on the court being that their team is made up of religious boys. Her coach called her aside and told her she would have to sit out the game.

The wrinkle in the story is that the league rules allow girls to play on the boys teams but with some limitations including it being dependent on the opposing team being ok with it. If however the opposing team protests for religious reasons, the girl cannot play but must sit out the game.

Elitzur Efrat was in the right, according to the rules of the league.

As an aside, the league is now being sued to scrap this rule and to treat girls and boys equally.

It seems to have been a shock because in a game between these two teams earlier in the season, the Efrat team played despite Yamin being on the court and lacing up and did not protest her presence. It seems the kids didnt care, but when some parents had found out about her participation in the game, after the fact, they got upset and made the decision that next time she would be told to sit.

This sounds like one of those sappy moments in the stories that you hear about how the team rallied around their disheartened teammate and bolstered her with support and said they would all refuse to play unless she can. Or the Efrat team saying we wont stop her form playing, this is our problem and we will forfeit. But that did not happen. And the rule allows for it.

The league has responded to similar complaints in the past saying the religious beliefs of its players must be respected. And they must be. But what about her and her team's beliefs? Do they also not deserve to be respected? And not just her beliefs - what about her herself -does she not deserve to be respected?

If the league is mixed, girls cant be told they cant play because someone else doesnt want them to. If girls are not going to be allowed to play at times, make it fully separate leagues, which is totally normal. If the league allows girls to play and in that sense it is a mixed league, even if only in a limited way, religion should not be used to hurt others. Heck, a team might not want to face her and make a bogus religious claim to force her to sit.

There are so many inspiring stories from all levels of sports of how athletes, especially young athletes, stood up for inclusivity, for standing up for the weaker, for doing the right thing as people with the desire to win remaining secondary to being good human beings. This is not one of them. And that's a shame.
