Hakahal primaries spam doesn't win votes

One of the new Haredi political parties that have recently been formed, HaKahal, held its primaries yesterday. Their primaries were held via their website and over the telephone.

I hardly know anything at all really about the party or its positions, but based on the website more than a handful of the candidates are from Bet Shemesh, including a friend of mine. It looks like no women were included, which is always an issue that comes up when talking about new Haredi parties (seemingly as a way of trying to differentiate them from the mainstream Haredi parties).

Personally they called me more than twenty times yeterday throughout the day to encourage me to vote in the primaries. I never signed up as a member of the party nor as someone interested in voting int heir primaries, so I am not sure how they got my number (not that it is a top military secret) or why they called me to vote. maybe they just called everyone in all haredi towns and neighborhoods or something like that. I answered a few times (because the calls came in from a few different numbers) and ignored most of the calls. I was not interested enough (and frankly was busy with work when they initially called) in listening to the long message or in the voting process so after hearing what they wanted I just hung up.

I get that they are a new party and are trying to encourage people to participate in their process and gather support, but spamming people with 20+ calls over the course of a day is not a way, at least I don't think it is, to create endearment or support.

Haredi news groups and media are reporting that the heads of Hakahal are disappointed with the level of participation in the primaries yesterday. With only little effort required, voting was to be done via telephone and internet with no need to go anywhere for physical voting, only about 14000 people voted. They had claimed leading up to the primaries that 90000 had registered to vote.

Personally, for a new Haredi party where it can be socially and communally dangerous for people to participate in such a thing, I think 14000 is pretty impressive, though that is still a far cry from having any realistic chance of getting into the Knesset. Maybe people were frustrated by all the calls (I personally was upset at the chutzpah) or didnt like listening to long lists of names over the phone and figuring out how to vote for them. Or maybe not enough people are really interested in this.

Baruch Hatov Vehametiv

Baruch Hatov Vehameitiv!

The bracha of Hatov Vehamitiv is said for good things but is different than Shehecheyanu in that it is intended to be said when the news or event is good for not just myself but for other people as well.

The brqcha of Hatov Vehameitiv was established as part of Birkat Hamazon (aka bentching) to thank God for the allowance we received to bury the many people of Beitar who were killed in the Bar Kochba revolt, who's bodies had been miraculously preserved from decomposing during the time they remained unburied.

I think this bracha is appropriate today as the remains of Yehuda Katz, fallen soldier from the battle of Sultan Yacoub in Lebanon 1982, have finally been breought back to Israel for Jewish burial. Katz's remains were the last remains outstanding from that battle after those of Zachary Baumel and Zvi Feldman were brought back in 2019 and 2025 respectively.

It took 44 years, but Israel kept looking and did not give up. Another painful chapter has been closed.

Rest in peace Yehuda.

Quote of the Day

So offensive that in some Israeli religious schools, the plus sign is not used in math. The plus sign, you know, that connotes addition. Why? Because it looks like a cross, and that's considered too offensive for the eyes of schoolchildren, and so an inverted T is used. That's a fact, you can look it up

1. who told him? that was supposed to be a sevcret. whoever told him needs to be kicked out of the Elders....

2. It is true. Not all schools, but many, especially in the religious and Haredi school systems. We really should switch from using a deformed plus symbol to a star of david0

kiddush hashem in Bein Hazmanim

This was not an interesting psak but I'll bring it here anyway... With the start of "bein hazmanim" Rav Yiztchak Zilbershtein, rav of Ramat Elchonon neighborhood of Bnei Braq, offered words of chizuk and enocuragement to the avreichim of his kollel, especially considering the current environment that is hot right now against Haredim and them now going to be out there in public as targets while on vacation.....

Hamechadesh brings Rav Zilbershtein's words of warning and encouragement... Ra Zilberrshtein said the people who learn here in his kollel are like learning in Slabodka where they act and speak with great levels of derech eretz and they are identifiable by their gentleness of spirit. They do not scream in the streets like a donkey.

When people insult us, as bnei yeshiva, we forgve the insult immediately and simply say thank you for the comment I will take it under consideration. This is what we learned in Slabodka how a ben yeshiva behaves, Rav Zilbershtein said.

During bein hazmanim, while out and about in the streets, your behavior has to be such that people who see you will know that these are people who were blessed by God. No screaming in public. No eating in the street, not even eating or licking ice cream and the like.

And mostly, if someone insults us, simply respond by saying forgive me, perhaps you are right, I will work to be better in the future.

This type of behavior will be a tremendous kiddush hashem.

Yeshiva boy or not, we could all benefit from better behavior in public and bettering our own behaviors in public.

what is Leitner's best case scenario?

I have been reading about Moti Leitner and following some of his interviews since he started his campaign to get representatives of his new Haredi faction "Hatzibur Hacharedi" into the electoral lists of Shas and UTJ...

I find the attempt especially interesting, which is why I have been following it.

Briefly, the latest developments that I have seen are that Leitner is trying to get a rep added to both the lsts of Shas and of UTJ, not one or the other. He represents, or claims to, tens of thousands of young Haredim who feel disassociated with the current party lists of both parties as he represents both ashkenazim and sphardim. Additionally, UTJ appealed to the electoral board whop instructed Leitner to stop using the UTJ logo and electoral information in their ads as it is unauthorized use. Also, the Haredi parties are starting to fight back claiming that they will soon be revealing who is funding Leitner and the revelation will basically put him out of business - the implication being it is anti-haredi elements, perhaps the deep Left, etc.. we'll see how bad it really is when the information comes out (I am skeptical it is as bad as they say and will cause the earthquake they think it will) but them starting to fight back is an interesting development.

What I don't understand about Leitner's plan is how he expects to fit into UTJ even in the best case scenario. Shas might be less of a problem in this. First, when he ran in municipal elections in Bet Shemesh he was asked about how is he any different if he wont add a woman to the party list and he said he plans to in the future but he has to get off the ground first. I remember hearing grumbling about that but people bought it, perhaps due to not having any alternative but they bought it. If they get into UTJ and Shas, what happens with that - will he lose his following he claims to have or will they still stick with him? Does he expect to change UTJ and Shas or does he just become another faction of UTJ and Shas with no big changes?

And second, one of Leitner's big successes, which is why he seems to represent the yougn Haredi crowd, the working Haredim, the modern Haredim, the blue shirt Haredim, the Israeli Haredim, or whatever else you might call them, is his success in pushing through the formation of "Mamach" schools - Public Haredi schools, Mamlachti Haredi, state run Haredi schools in which a full curriculum of core studies is provided, whch is what many of these younger Haredi couples want. Moshe Gafni, head of Degel hatorah, has been very consistent in speaking against the formation of Mamachs and has put forth every effort possible to thwwart them and refuse government licensing. In Bet Shemesh the public has been somewhat successful with some being formed and some getting licensed, but elsewhere Gafni has been largeky successful in preventing it. Even just last week Gafni said in an interview that he will make sure the government does not approve any Mamachs moving forward. So what is Leitner's plan? Does he think he will change Shas's position on this, let alone UTJ's? His one big success (that I am aware of) is one that Gafni is sworn to be dedicated to oppose - how will they live together in one party if his best case scenario pans out and UTJ/Shas open their arms to him?

Has anybody heard him explain this? I haven't.

my election ani maamin

I have said this many times, and I will say it again.... I don't believe much in election polls. I think the questions are tailored to get certain answers. i think the respondents frequently lie. I think questions are not clear or broad or accurate enough to present the voter with all the relevant options. I think new parties joining the system throw everything off. I think polls before campaigns even start are even more worthless.. etc.

That being said, there are some trends one can see that give indications one way or the other, along with behaviors and patterns of candidates and parties that give indications beyonfd what the polls might show.

That being said, I have complete faith, ani maamin, in the ability of the current parties that make up the Opposition today to mess up and lose what should be an easy electoral victory. As dysfunctional and as bad as the government was this term, the Opposition was even more dysfunctional and useless. I don't dare predict who will win and who will lose, and definitely not so early in the season with so much campaigning and changes ahead of us, but I would not be surprised to see the Opposition totally mess up their campaigns.

not everyone who wears black and white is learning Torah. That is a lie. The people who have hurt the cause of the Torah-learning public the most is Goldknopf and gafni who say we are all learning Torah. No, not all of you are learning Torah.

Interesting Psak: Music in the Hospitals

Rav Yitzchak Zilbershtein, rav of Ramat Elchonon neighborhood of Bnei Braq was asked if the groups of people who go to the hospitals top bring cheer to patients by playing music, singing and dancing can contiue doing so during the Nine Days or if they should not play live music during these days of mourning over the destruction of the mikdash?

Rav Zilbershtein responded that the gemara says nothing is more important than pikuach nefesh, and bring cheer and joy to sick people is a great mitzva. Also, we find that joy and happiness helps the healing process.  So it is a great mitzva to go tot he hospitals and play music and sing and bring joy to the patients who have serious illnesses even during these difficult days of mourning...

New Haredi faction for elections

There is a Haredi election campaign running that looks like it could make things interesting.

We have seen in some previous elections attempts by new political formations in the Haredi community. A new party will form and run in the elections and the traditional Haredi parties will push hard against them leading to combinations of social threats against the people behind the new party along with pressure to drop out so as to not waste votes and to not take away votes from the traditional parties. In the past, with just a small number of semi-recent exception, the new parties do not even make it to the finish line and drop out well before the elections. TOV and DERECH were the exceptions that I can think of offhand and they continued to run all the way to the end (and even won some mandates) in municipal elections but not in national elections, and there was a Hared women's party that ran to the end of but ended up very weak after a tough campaign against them and beyond their actual existence did not really accomplish anything significant with their run achieving a very small pool of votes.

There has been talk in recent monthsof several new Haredi parties being formed. I saw one that would compete directly with Shas being formed by a Rav Abergil. I am aware of another that seemed to me to be a yeshivish anglo (or maybe part anglo) party, though I havent heard anything about them recently. I am hearing of another party being formed by groups like Rav Betzalel Cohen and others he is working with. We'll see what comes of all these and if they can withstand the pressure that will surely be levied on them. These are the traditional formations of parties and what normally happens to them as the elections approach.

There is a new campaign out there right now an dit is different than the traditional.

Instead of forming a new party and trying to garner support and withstand the pressures that are certainly coming, Motti Leitner, a municipal politician from Bet Shemesh (from the DERECH parrty) is now running  a 2 million shekel campaign for the upcoming elections. He formed a faction, called "HaTzibbur Hacharedi"  - the Haredi Public, and instead of campaigning for this as a party looking for support, he is campaigning right now to push the traditional Haredi parties to take him in as a representative of his facton. According to the current campaign, UTJ and Shas are both made up of various factions, and Hatzibbus Hacharedi would simply be another faction in the umbrella and would be given a specific slot on whichever list accepts him to represent his faction. His campaign is not seeming to target UTJ or Shas specifically but I think naturally it would be more in line with UTJ, though practically I think Shas might have a higher chance of adopting him (not that they will but that the chances are higher in my opinion).

Leitner's campaign is pointing out that yeshiva bochurim have become targets, the honor of Torah has been trampled, families are being crushed under financial burdens. These are traditional Haredi issues and technically exactly what the traditional Haredi parties supposedly deal with... so why is this new faction necessary? They say new blood needs to be infused into the traditional parties, more representation of the younger generation.
source: i24 News

Interestingly, DERECH, the party Leitner heads in Bet Shemesh, did not run a municipal campaign on traditional Haredi issues but seemed to represent the community called the "modern Haredim" which are young couples ansd families many of whom work and are not learning in yeshivas and have concerns other than things like the traditional concern of Haredi draft and money for yeshivas and the like, so I find it interesting that they are moving away from that and trying to bring the traditional campaigns to the younger crowd they claim to represent. I look forward to seeing how this develops..

Monsters by the Walls

The big titilating news the other day was an announcement by Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, in coordination with Minister of Environmental Protection Idit Silman, that he intends to open a facility like Alligator Alcatraz which will be a prison for terrorists surrounded by a moat that will be populated with alligators (or maybe crocodiles?) to ensure the prisoners stay put.

Interestingly, the original Alligator Alcatraz did not have a moat with alligators but it was located the Everglades of Florida where alligators are commonly found in the wild. More interestingly, it did not work and Alligator Alcatraz, the original, was shut down.

I created this image via AI. I am not aware of any actual upcoming television series on this theme, though maybe the television producers can be talked into another season of Prison Break...

In Israel this is not really even allowed. The plan was going to be to get the alligators (crocs?) from the Chamat Gader resort and relocate them to the Ketziot prison in Southern Israel. The National Parks and Nature Authority said they will not relocate the gators as the gators can only be used in Israel for research and education. To cricumvent that Silman signed an order changing the classification of the alligators (crocodiles?) to something like "managed wild animals for security needs" so the Nature Authority's objection would be moot and they could then be put in the moat.

Is it feasible or not? Plenty of discussion on the Internet about that. Maybe it is too expensive as the gators need to be cared for and fed, given medical care and whatever else gators require? Maybe they are not even effective at stopping prison breaks - gators sleep a lot and don't need to eat much (but no, I would not want to swim across a moat populated with possibly hungry gators). I don't know the answers to the big debates about this, but I do have one question I have not seen discussed at all.....

How common is it for terrorists or other "security prisoners" to escape from prisons in Israel that an alligator moat might even be effective and worthwhile? How common are prison escapes in general, even by regular criminals and not terrorists?

How necessary is it really, and if it gets done will it even accomplish anything that is not already being accomplished by normal security measures? Is there truly any purpose of it for anything more than some "likes" on social media, and some articles in the press that will excite some people before elections?

Tweet of the Day

translation:
Seriously, the Jerusalem Municipality is turning off the music and issuing fines in the Machane Yehuda Market because of the Nine Days

I posted this because it went somewhat viral and the suggestion in it is interesting and cute, but it is wrong. The Jerusalm municipality twitter/x account responded that their shutting of the music and distributing of fines had nothing to do with the Nine Days. They were shutting down music and giving out fines because of municipal bylaws being violated in the playing of loud disruptive music during the "quiet hours", aka siesta hours, of 2-4pm, and also the business owners had put their music guy making all that noise out in the public walkway without a permit rather than inside their own premeses...

it is easy to assume even something as ridiculous as what was originally posted. It is good to get the true story.

While it might be against halacha to play music during the Nine Days (yes, there are different minhagim, and also different interpretations of what is considered prohibited music in regards to the Nine Days), as far as I know there are no laws against it in the legal books of Israel (other than wedding halls being shut down, and I dont think that is a law rather a directive from the Rabbanut kashrut authorities)...

I dont think lashon hara was chosen or sinas chinam or other topics were chosen because someone decided something good to campaign about to work on. they were chosen because according to various opinions or commentaries, those topics are topics to work on and improve on so as to effect the geula or to effect the return fo the beis hamikdash because those failings are what caused the destruction....

freezing arrests

At the behest of the Haredi parties, the Knesset passed the law a short while ago that enacts a temporary measure to freeze the arrests of yeshiva bochurim who have the status of being deserters. Without getting into the details, it is just a temporary measure and only applies to yeshiva bochurim (and will require supervision and inspections of the yeshivas).

I assume this law will be shot down by the Supreme Court pretty quickly. I do not see how you can pass a law to exempt some people from arrest for the same crime that other people are being arrested for at the same time.

I do not know why they did not propose an easy solution of freezing arrests of all deserters for the same period. That would provide equal application and would perhaps give it more of a chance of sticking (though I am no legal expert so may be entirely wrong about that).

Interesting Psak: Shabbos elevator in RBS D

This exact story happened in my building 25 or so years ago. I personally was involved in the sense of helping an elderly and unwell neighbor who lived on a higher floor. At the time the people involved did not go to a beis din but went to a local rav to resolve the dispute.

Behadrei is reporting on a dispute in a building in RBS D. The building is 8 stories tall and residents living on the upper floors (including an elderly resident) want to use the Shabbos Elevator that was included in the building by the original kablan, which they iostensibly planned to benefit from when they bought their apartments, and everyone who purchased in the building knew this was an included feature which their apartment price included. They say they purchased the right to use the Shabbos elevator. Preventing them form using it will prevent them from being able to be mobile in general and even from going to shul sometimes on Shabbos and holidays.

Other neighbors oppose the use of the Shabbos elevator in the building in which they reside. They make claims of it being harmful to the education of their children, damaging to the spiritual atmosphere of the building and neighborhood.

Unable to resolve the matter amongst themselves, they agreed to go to a beis din for a decision.

The beis din heard both sides and their positions, and after weighing the matter has come to a decision.

The beis din stressed the issue of the holiness of Shabbos, the special charchter of Bet Shemesh and the sensitivity of the Haredi community to the operation of electrical systems on Shabbos, while also taking into consideration the the rights of the residents who purchased this ability when they purchased their apartments and that the shabbos elevator was installed as an original part of the building (rather than them requesting to add it at a later stage).

The beis din came up with a plan for a comprise by which the Shabbos elevator would be operating on a limited schedule, only certain hours of the day rather than over the entire Shabbos, and some other limitations (I imagine only stopping on the upper floors and the ground floor but not on the lower residential floors). Efforts will be made (nothing is specified so I do not know what the efforts are in real life) to minimize the sense of harm to the charachter of Shabbos, while filling the needs of the residents on the upper floors.

in the case that I was familiar with 25 or so years ago the rav they went to said the Shabbos elevator cannot be relied upon (he did not like the shabbos mode and considered it halachically problematic even bdieved) so the Shabbos elevator was not allowed to go into operation and the fellow above had to stay put on Shabbos and yomtov.

Interesting Psak: Registering in the Likud to vote in Primaries

Recent news reports have made references to various Haredi askanim who are powerful, or maybe influential is a better word, in the Likud because they register thousands of Haredim as members of the Likud. The general thought is that most have no intention to vote for the Likud but will continue generally voting for UTJ, but being a registered member of the Likud gives them the ability to vote in the primaries and influence the Likud to take positions closer to what the Haredi community or political parties want.

On Kol BeRama radio Rav Ahron Butbol was asked a quesion about this type of behavior.

A listener asked if it is ok to register for Likud membership so as to support a specific candidate who is religious in his candidacy for a slot on the Likud list. the questioner mentioned that until now he has refused to do so so as to avoid strengthening a secular political party, but ont he other hand perhaps continuing to refuse actually leaves the field open to anti-religious elements and leaves it open to the opposite of what he wants - he wants the Likud to get closer to more religious positions, but leaving it because it isnt a religious party (at least officially) leaves it to be more influenced by anti-religious...

Rav Butbol said that on election day voting for a secular party is a problem because that strengthens a secular party, but the request here is not to actually vote for the Likud but to register so as to vote in the primaries and support a religious candidate. It is problematic to do so because the Haredi public is committed and obligated to vote for the Haredi and religious parties. However, registering for internal elections is a tool to influence the identities of their representatives and is not necessarily considered supporting the platform of the party.

Rav Butbol points out there were three Likud MKs who torpedoed the progress of the Draft law. The PM could not do anything about it. They were elected to Likud slots in the Likud primaries. If the public with a connection to tradition would be more involved in the internal elections in the Likud, candidates who keep tradition and religious values can be elected and the Likud could be turned into a party that protects the Torah world more.

Before continuing I would note that MKs Edelstein and Ilouz are both religious and still chose to oppose the law that was being presented.

To conclude, Rav Butbol paskened that if the candidate is recognized as a good decent person with a strong and true connection to religion and tradition, there is a strong reason to register to help him be elected. This would not be considered "assisting a chilul hashem" but the exact opposite - strengthening the Torah positions in other political strongholds.

A news item I noticed a few days ago brought me back to my high school days...

A few days ago there was a report in the news that the World Cup is affecting the IDF fight against terror.

According to the news report, the World Cup, aka Mondial, competition/tournament that is ongoing is very popular in the Arab communities (this is well known and is not the point of the report or a surprise) and the Arab Muslim fighters against Israel, the terrorists are staying up late at night to watch the games, and then they sleep late in the morning. They are currently far more focused on the World Cup matches than on fighting.

The adjusted schedules of the terrorists has forced the IDF to adjust its schedule of activity and fighting.

The above has been reported about the fighting in Judea and Samaria, as well as in Gaza and in Lebanon. They might watch up to 4 matches a night and the are too tired in the morning to fight.

So how did this bring me back to high school?

I remember my 9th grade rebbi talking about us following baseball and other sports teams and he said that the baseball game is good for getting 40,000 goyim in the stadium and more tens of thousands watching on tv at home off the streets and not attacking or bothering the Jews. That is all it is good for.

I guess he is still right, even with Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists.

Maybe Israel's security forces should explore the possibility of creating additional global tournaments that will draw the attention and focus of the terrorists and  we will have to spend less time and energy fighting them.

Primary Season is open!

I just got my first "direct" communication from a Likud candidate for Knesset, he is also a current MK, asking for my support in the upcoming primaries. He also offered me the option to volunteer for his campaign to help him succeed.

I responded asking about the possibility of the primaries being canceled entirely. While I still dont think that is going to happen and is only being used to pressure Likud leadership to give Netanyahu the maximum number of  "shiryunim" as possible, it is still on the table.

We'll see what he responds, if anything.

The obne thing that does come of this is that it indicates election season is finally officially here and open!

saving our enemies

By now you surely have heard the bombshell dropped last night by the Spokesman of Ichilov Hospital. It is all over the news.

The Spokesman of Ichilov Hospital revealed last night in an interview that Erdogan, the President of Turkey, had some bad cancer and Israel sent, with PM Netanyashu's approval, via the Mossad a specialist doctor to turkey to treat him and the team saved his life.

The specific doctor's name has not been revealed.

Erdogan has for years been threatening Israel and speaking militantly about Israel. And PM Netanyahu has considered Erdogan an enemy and a dangerous threat for years. And specifically now over the past few days with Erdogan trying to buy F35s from Trump, Netanyahu has been speaking very harshly against Erdogan.

So, why does Israel keep saving our worst enemies? Erdogan (unknown when this happened), Sinwar (2006ish) and Mahmoud Abbas (in 2018) all saved by Israeli doctors sent by Israel (were there others we don't yet know about? but this revelation makes me wonder...)... It makes me wonder if the harsh talk, maybe on both sides, is just for show
