a deal on the table
We are at that point again where the news is reporting an imminent agreement between the USA and Iran that will obviously affect Israel but we do not know what to believe.
The agreement on the table, as reported, does not look great for Israel's interests (to put it mildly), but we have been in similar situations before. Israeli reporesentatives are not saying anything, Trump is talking about it being a great deal, and the ranians are saying things that contradict things they are supposedly agreeing to.
Is it a head fake and the USA is about to go on the attack again while everyone thinks a deal is about to be signed, or is a deal really about to be signed? I am not sure we have any way to make an educated guess. I also would not be surprised if we don't get a deal signed (at least in the coming days) but we also do not get an attack but Trump announces an extension to continue working out the details or something like that.
Confusing times. Sometimes this type of situation can be worse than an actual deal (even a bad one) or attack - can't really make plans, people do not know what to do, terror continues (at least from Hezbollah)

rest, reflection and gratitude
The USA is celebrating its 250th national birthday this year...
Under the banner of Freedom 250, the USA is running all sorts of celebrations and initiatives. Under the banner of Rededicate 250, a program of national prayer, praise and thanksgiving, on Sunday May 17 the American people will come together at the National Mall to prepare for the 250th birthday with prayer, Scripture, thanksgiving and rededication of the country as One Nation Under God. You can see more about the program at the linked website. Rabbi Meir Soloveichik is listed among the faith leaders who will be participating in the program.
And to that end, President Trump, as posted on the White House website, has called on and encourages all Jewish Americans, with Jewish American Heritage Month being now (May is always Jewish American Heritage Month), to observe a "national Sabbath" - the Shabbos of May 15-16 from sundown to nightfall, friends, families and communities should "come together in gratitude for our great nation", recognizing the sacre Jewish tradition of setting aside time for rest, reflection and gratitude to the Almighty. President Trump further calls " I call upon Americans to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Jewish Americans and to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies. I further call on all Americans to celebrate their faith and freedom throughout this year, during this month, and especially on Shabbat to celebrate our 250th year."
Trump referenced the famous statement from the first President of the United States of America, George Washington, that said while visiting the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island in 1790 wishing for the safety of the Children of Abraham, and referenced Hayyim Solomon who helped build the nation and work for its independence among other Jews. Trump went on to say he is aggressively fighting antisemitism and religious freedom is a sacred right guiding the nation...
So, keep Shabbos for Trump on May 15... :-) .. He actually does not reference keep halachic shabbos, but rest, reflection and gratitude are great things as well....

Quote of the Day
I told Bibi – stop taking credit for the Iron Dome, that’s our technology.
-- USA President Donald Trump
I know the US provided some funding and some other involvement but I thought the technology development was Israeli.. is Trump taking credit inappropriately or is he correct in some way?

everlasting peace
I like how President Trump keeps calling our situation things like "everlasting peace in the Middle East" while here in Israel it is a barely tenuous ceasefire.
If not for all the "Bibisitting" the US administration is doing to make sure we dont go back to war, the ceasefire might well have already been ended...yet to Trump this is everlasting peace.
Lu Yehi, as they say... let it be.. who knew we could achieve everlasting peace just like that...

what makes this a good deal?
I need you to explain something to me, about the current deal on the table, but the same really applies to all the deals that have been out there and that likely will be out there in the future.
When negotiating a deal, both sides have to be incentivized to agree to it - each side has to feel like it is gaining something, getting what it needs, to be able to agree.
President Trump announced a deal on the way and Israel went and negotiated with Trump to make sure certain clauses and terms would be included so Israel could live with it. PM Netanyahu has said he accepts it because Israel's concerns are taken care of in this arrangement and can live with Hamas being exiled or whatever specifics arent exactly what Israel wanted. Fair enough.
And now we wait for Hamas to "study the proposal" and return with a response.
What in this deal, or in any deal, is included that would make Hamas agree to it and feel they got something they want and need?
From a negotiations perspective why should or would Hamas accept this deal, or any deal Israel agrees to? Any deal Israel agrees to basically does away with Hamas. Why would they ever agree to that? What has any of these deals offered Hamas as incentive to agree? All these deals have been win-lose from Hamas perspective. Technically it is a good deal (maybe) for the people of Gaza but Hamas doesn't care about that - what is there that would encourage Hamas to agree to this and that they can see as being beneficial to them?
Offering a deal that has no chance of being accepted by the other side because it offers them nothing beneficial is not really a solution. Maybe just saying we won't kill them all but will let them leave is enough for them, though we know that so far that has not been enough.
Please explain. I get why this is a good deal from our side, but why do we think would Hamas ever agree to that? Maybe it is enough that Qatar might pressure them to. Maybe not
Meaning, an Israeli I want us to win and not Hamas and come out of this on top. But if we are offering them a deal, what's the point if we are not offering them something they can point to as a win for them? They simply wont accept it.

strange day
Today was a strange day with the ceasefire coming out of nowhere early this morning.
We Israelis were told about the ceasefire by President Trump and by the Iranians but our own government stayed silent about it for a long time, so we in Israel had no idea what was true, what was bluster, what was happening, and what was real or fake. Eventually the Israeli government confirmed it as well. Despite the ceasefire the Iranians shot missiles at Israel. Israel was going to retaliate and Trump seems to have harshly told Israel to back off. Strange day.
The ceasefire seems imposed. It also seems like subterfuge with Trump going crazy about Israel possibly retaliating despite being so close over the past two weeks. Maybe it is more deception and a distraction with something sneaky to come out of nowhere in a few days.
During the campaign against Iran Netanyahu strutted around proud of what Israel had accomplished, and rightfully so. He even gave interviews (to news outlets other than Channel 14) and press conferences with questions, that he rarely does, and speeches proudly tooting his horn. he also sounded like a leader again, and less like the divisive politician worried about his own interests as he has acted and sounded over the past 4-5 years. Now with Netanyahu receding into the shadows to avoid Trump's anger he again seems back to being the Netanyahu of recent rather than the Netanyahu of old where he suddenly doesnt talk to the Israelis anymore and his personal politics is going front and center.

Now with Netanyahu receding into the shadows to avoid Trump's anger he again seems back to being the Netanyahu of recent rather than the Netanyahu of old where he suddenly doesnt talk to the Israelis anymore and his personal politics is going front and center.
The Israeli government at some point released another statement about accepting the ceasefire and that Israel had accomplished all of its goals in Iran so can end it now. The statement is strange because just yesterday members of the war cabinet spoke about how we still have what to do and it will end in a few days when it is all accomplished, and just this morning the Iranians shot ballistic missiles at Israel killing several people and wounding many more. The official war goals had been to dismantle the nuclear program and to dismantle the threat of ballistic missiles. The first one seems to have been accomplished with flying colors, while the second makes it seem like the ceasefire was imposed because that is clearly not something that has been accomplished.
All that being said, the mission in Iran seemed, using the few tools we can judge it with, to have been a great success and we Israelis had some very proud moments over the past 11 days. The issue of the ceasefire is strange and unclear and from what has been said publicly it has seem to left a bad taste in the mouths of many. Despite all that, I think this is mostly a minor thing relative to what Israel has done over the past 11 days, and the lashing from Trump is also minor relative to what has been accomplished with and by the USA, over the past 11 days.

Interesting Psak: no tachanun
Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi of Tzfat, issued a psak this morning decreeing that tachanun should not be said during the services today. Additionally we should all make the bracha of Hatov V'Hameitiv, and say Mizmor L'Toda.
Rav Eliyahu explained that having received the good news we have waited for so long, to remove the horrible Iranian threat, requires us to say a full throated thank you. When we thank God, the bounty flows even more. God gives the counsel and the strength to the leaders of Israel to succeed, to the government and the army and to the President of the USA.
source: Arutz7
I havent yet seen anyone say anything about Hallel, with or without a bracha

Trump wont bring our salvation
Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, hit the ground running even before he officially took office and has made a big splash. His affect on the Israel-Gaza situation has been immediate and Israelis are largely ecstatic so far by Trump's involvement and positions.
Many of his fans have considered him other worldly, sent by God (isn't everybody?), a harbinger of the Messiah, and according to some even the Messiah himself!
I guess Rav Moshe Shternbuch is not one of those fans.
Behadrei is reporting on a shiur given by Rav Moshe Shternbuch in which he said that people think we are strong, have a strong army, a powerful air force, but nothing can come of any of that. The only thing we have is God and the redemption can only come when we recognize that nobody can help us other than God h(H)imself.
Rav Shternbuch continued saying right now people are relying on the new president of the US and they think he will help us. You have to know, those people are delaying the coming of Mashiach. Only when people understand that God is the only power that can help us, nobody but God, we wont be saved by the President of the USA, only then can God bring our salvation.
Fair enough, but cant Trump (or anyone else) be the tool God sends via which the salvation is effected?
What do you think?
