I Should Have Become A Rabbi
The big news that broke yesterday was the Forbes-Globes report on the top 10 wealthiest rabbis of Israel. Topping the charts was Rabbi Pinchas Abuchatzeira, the son of Baba Elazar who was murdered last year. His value is recorded at 1.3 billion shekels. Coming in second is his uncle Rabbi Dovid Abuchatzeira (from Nahariya) with 750 million NIS of personal wealth.
3rd and 4th place slots were actually taken by ashkenazi rabbis, with the Admor of Gur and Belz, respectively, filling them in with serious drops to 350 and 180 million NIS.
The rest of the top ten spots were taken back by the Sephardic rabbis such as Rabbis Ifargan, Ben-Artzi and Pinto.
I should have listened to my mother when she kept telling me to become a rabbi. Even more so, I should have become a Sephardic rabbi!!

ReplyDeleteThe fraud part notwithstanding, it's not like these rabbis are vacationing in their villa in the south of France, riding around in a Ferrari and throwing wild parties every night in their 50-room mansions.
ReplyDeleteso for what do they bother amassing all that money? Some of them might live fairly simple lifestyles relative to their worth, while some of them have large houses with ornate decorations, but none of them are living the lifestyle BlackBeltStep mentions. So what's with amassing all that money?
ReplyDeleteWhat difference does it make if they are rich or not? Remember, no one was as rich as R. Yehuda HaNasi was, he brought Gedulah and Torah together.
ReplyDeleteI think the question should be asked of how they got their money, through investments, or through convincing people to donate money to them for "representing Torah and G-d". From what I heard, the Rebbes of Gur many years ago bought lots of land in the Tel Aviv area. Over time as Tel Aviv expanded, you can guess who made a profit off of prime real estate...What's wrong with that? It should happen to me too! But if it's not through "honest business" and as representing Torah and G-d, then they are going against Hillel in Pirkey Avot...
