Quote of the Day

Yesterday there were more Haredi MKs who wanted to see a female president than female MKs...  it is hypocrisy for MK Aliza Lavie to try to advance women in the religious councils but not to work to advance a female for the presidency..

-- MK Moshe Gafni, in a debate in the Knesset regarding a law proposal for the advancement of women in religious councils..

    1. He probably does, he seems like a smart man,but why let that get in the way of some cheap, meaningless propaganda that may give his supporters a chance to say "look at all those secular hypocrites, how dare them try to interfere in our holy domain, etc., etc."

  2. Does Ben Waxman understand Aliza Lavie?

BTW, which female candidate were they supposedly willing to support?

    1. i don't know that mk lavie supported either female candidate. that wasn't my point.

opposition to women on a religious council has got to be one gafni's silliest positions (and he's got plenty)

  3. supporting female advancement doesnt mean you have to support every single female looking for every single position. sometimes you feel someone else is more appropriate for a specific position. Lavie's supporting Rivlin or Shitreet (I dont know that she did) does not contradict her work for the advancement of wmoen, just because she might have felt Dalia Itzik or Dorner were not realistic candidates or less appropriate for the position.

  4. Rafi, Agreed.

Ben, "silly" is an opinion, and a "name" to call someone. I am certainly no fan of Gafni, but tell me this what is you halakhic support for why women need to religious councils? (Note: I am not saying that it is assur,...yet.) Sounds like Western exile influence being projected onto authentic Jewish thought and behavior.

Please explain why I might be wrong.

    1. it is an administrative position. of course women don't "need" to be the board, but on the other hand, neither do men (with the possible exception of the local rav to give a halachic opinion when needed). i can't see a problem with a board being 100% female, again with the possible exception of a rav.
