Badatz Eida says to use money for kapparos instead of chickens
I am not a fan of doing kapparos with chickens, and I am happy the government is trying to straighten things out, keep it limited to specific areas and minimize the tzaar baalei chaim as much as possible, but I am not against the minhag in general for people who prefer the chicken method rather than the tzedaka money method.
That being said, the Badatz Eida made a dramatic, and perhaps historic, decision today, and I am happy about it.
The restrictions on kapparos imposed by the Ministry of Agriculure have done their damage to the minhag. The restrictions make it difficult for those looking for chicken-based kapparos. Due to these restrictions, and the resulting difficulties, the Eida announced that this year people should use money (for tzedaka) for kapparos instead of chickens. The Eida has also stated that a person doing kapparos with money should use at least 25nis per person.
Obviously they use the opportunity to criticize the evil government decrees against religion...

if the new rules and restrictions stay in place for long enough, people will eventually get used to using money instead of chickens..

The Eida did not tell people to use money in place of chickens. They said if one is unable to fulfill the minhag with a chicken, money should be used instead. But initially and preferably it should be done as it always has, with live chickens.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. they said it, but they are taking it for granted that very few people will be able to do kapparos with a chicken and most will have to use money. otherwise hey wouldnt have even bothered with all this. but it is clear from the words and contextas well
DeleteAnd here I thought that Rafi had convinced the Eida to favor using money as first choice!
