IDF Chanukah tweet creeps people out

During Chanukah, the IDF Spokesperson twitter account posted various images of soldiers lighting Chanukah candles. The posted photo was accompanied with a short description of what the soldier does - e.g. plays tuba by day, lights candles at night.

This one seems to have upset some.

Haaretz is claiming that it "creeped out the international audeince". Despite saying that , Haaretz fails to actually quote any diplomat or other member of the "international crowd" complaining about the imagery or symbolism of the image.

  1. For Haaretz, the international audience is some people on twitter. IMO, the IDF social media crew is 80/20, actually probably better. Most of the time, they are doing a pretty good job, sometimes they are really dumb looking and I can only imagine the kids (18-19 yr old soldiers) that are running that crew and occasionally working with no adults around.

I kinda like this specific set of pictures for Hanukah, and this one is also not bad (except for the hanukiah being backwards, or he is lighting the new candle last, whatever :-) It is kinda of a spooky pic, and gets my thumbs up and even better that it raises the fear of the international audience of talkbackers.

  3. That's just because we have tried for so many years to hide the militant side of Chanukah - no masechet, all that talk about the miracle of the oil.... Jews who can fight - with G-d to back them - yes that can be scary!

  4. I think it's a clever photo.

I agree with Josh and Miriam.

Only this past summer, we had yet even more outcry over Jews defending themselves and their children.

    No surprises here.

  5. ... the photo is a bit creepy, but that could just be the lighting. Or the mask. Or the cave-ish feeling.
Not that that's bad. Just sayin.

  6. Whereas the pictures of Santa throwing rocks with a slingshot are not creepy at all....
