why act in Syria?
I need some help here.
There is some sort of massacre or genocide or something going on in Syria with government forces (remember when Al Jolani was considered a good guy, reformed from his ISIS ways?) attacking Druze communities in [Southern?] Syria.
Somehow Israel has gotten involved and has been attacking targets in Syria to try to protect the Druze communities.
I get that we have Druze in Israel that are generally loyal to Israel, and they have familial ties to the Druze in Syria, but why are the Syrian Druze and whatever is going on there our problem? Are we now the world's policeman? don't we have enough problems of our own?
I am not against our involvement, I just don't understand it and don't know enough about why we are getting involved.
Besides for that where are the campus protests around the world on behalf of the Druze and against the Syrian government? Where are the protests in the streets? Where are the outraged activists and governments calling on Syrian forces to stop killing innocent civilians?

I don×™t think you should put jokes (the last paragraph) in an article discussing a serious subject.
ReplyDeleteDruze are loyal to the countries they live in but also to each other. Druze on the Israeli side of the border are watching their brethren get attacked and are likely demanding Israel do something about it. Imagine Israel saying "Oh, you're an important part of the country and you serve valiantly in the army but no, this isn't our problem."
ReplyDeleteSince taking over Syria, the new government had made it clear they want a Sunni-only country. They're wiping out their Alawites and Chrisians, and now they're going after the Druze.
As Amit Segal has pointed out, first, it's the Druze. Second, it's getting control over a buffer area between a potential Turkish empire- the Druze zone lies between Israel and the rest of Syria.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it's Israel exercising its new role as the regional superpower, in this case over Syria. You want all these people to know who's in charge at a relatively cheap price.
Wouldn't it be fun if Israel came out with a map of southern Lebanon and Syria that showed borders for the new Druzeland?
