The United Nations has issued a report showing that most of their trucks of humanitarian aid have been ransacked and looted by Hamas and others.
From the article, this seems like the key part to me:
88% of trucks since May, with over 90% being looted in June and 94% in July!The United Nations Office for Project Services has published data showing that since the resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza on May 19 and up until August 5, a total of 2,604 aid trucks were collected by the UN after entering the Strip. Of those, 2,309 did not reach their intended destinations inside the enclave.
According to the organization, this was due to the trucks being “intercepted either peacefully by hungry people or forcefully by armed actors during transit in Gaza.” This accounts for 88% of all trucks.
In recent months, the percentages were even higher. According to UNOPS, in June, 1,155 trucks were collected by the UN and its partner organizations, and 1,048 of them — 90.7% — were intercepted before reaching their destinations. In July, the figure rose to 94%, with 1,161 trucks collected and 1,093 intercepted.
On the one hand you gotta give the UN credit for not burying this and actually publishing a report on their own work that shows how badly they have failed.
I find it amazing that they can run around going on media all over the world talking about how Israel should just let them do what they do and what they are professional and experts at in giving out humanitarian aid, while up to94% of their trucks are being looted by terrorists.
it really sounds like they are such professionals, like they do such an amazing job, are great at what they do. They just need to be left along by Israel to do what they do better than anyone else!
Who in the United Nations ever has to pay for the price for their failures? Anyone?

stop the aid
I don't know what is going on over there in Houthiville in Yemen, but it seems things are getting rough.
For whatever reason the Houthis have taken something like 28 UN workers as hostages. I don't really know what their demands are or what they are upset about. Maybe they want new robes and sandals. Regardless, I hope the UN workers will be treated well and released quickly.
That being said, Antonio Guiterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, has called on the UN to immediately stop all programs and funding to the Houthis, stop all aid, while demanding the release of the UN workers taken hostage.
Interesting how when Hamas took Israelis hostage, Guiterres insisted Israel send in humanitarian aid to Hamas and the people of Gaza, increase aid. When Israel spoke about cutting aid to Gaza he and his people accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Is the UN now committing a genocide in Yemen (specifically in Saada)?

fight or flight
With PM Benjamin Netanyahu flying out to the United Nations later today to speech at the General Assembly, an interesting debate was sparked.
When should the Prime Minister return from the United States of America back to Israel?
It sounds like a pretty benign question but it is actually far more heated than it probably should or needs to be.
As soon as Netanyahu started talking his travel schedule, some UTJ MKs and Ministers started talking up about how Netanyahu should stay in the USA for Shabbos and only return after as chilul shabbos would not be justified.
Other, including from the Religious Zionist party said just the opposite. We are in a situation of pikuach nefesh and the Prime Minister should return immediately, as soon as his work there is done, and travel even if it means traveling on Shabbos - it would be a mitzva to do so.
Let's not forget, the Prime Minister of Israel is currently in the middle of leading a war against Hamas in Gaza and against Hezbollah in Lebanon. at any moment this could expand to include other enemy countries, and it needs clear leadership to make operative decisions on military actions.
In my unimportant and insignificant opinion, if the Prime Minister thinks it is important to go to the United Nations, as waging the war also includes the diplomacy and the speeches from the floor of the United Nations and from other places and meeting with world leaders, then that is something he should when necessary find or make the time to do. And with the physical war still ongoing he needs to flip the switch and go from one to the other seamlessly, on a moments notice.
I think the justification of MK Gafni and Minister Goldknopf (and others who might have weighed in and said not to travel back until after Shabbos) would go something like this:
If running the war is so critical, he doesn't have to go to the United Nations. If he can go to the UN, he can wait until after shabbos to return
Interestingly, Bibi won't tell them sorry but I have to come back. His office announced the schedule that would include staying Shabbos there and flying back after Shabbos. They already made their public statement and can't walk it back now so if he comes back on Shabbos they have to create a coalition crisis, so running the war takes a back seat. Which in retrospect maybe, perhaps, also shows that his immediate return isn't quite as critical as we might think

15 years to clean up
According to the United Nations, the destruction in Gaza is so bad that it will take 15 years to clear the rubble.
It would take up to 15 years to clear around 40 million tons of war rubble in #Gaza says @UNEP. The effort would need 100+ trucks and cost over $500 million.

The United Nations strikes again
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his grave concerns on Friday about the friction in the north between Lebanon (Hezbollah) and Israel increasing and widening into a greater conflict. Guterres said "Let’s be clear: The people of the region and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza ".
1. Guterres isn't worried Israel might become another Gaza, under attack by Iranian advanced weapons in the hands of Hezbollah. He is only worried Lebanon might become another Gaza, from Israeli attacks
2. I guess he has confidence in Israel's abilities, but not in Hezbollah's.
3. or maybe he just does not care if Israel becomes Gaza from Lebanese attacks?
4. and why did it not bother him until now with Hezbollah attacking Israel daily, destroying communities, displacing tens of thousands of people from communities near the border, but is only concerned once Israel starts stepping up the retaliatory strikes and what that might lead to?
5. Where are the United Nations peacekeeping forces and why are they not doing their job?

the bread of freedom being sent to Gaza
Minister Meir Porush has petitioned the United Nations to send humanitarian aid to the hostages being held in Gaza.
Porush reached out to Tor Wennesland, the UN representative to the Middle East asking to send matza and wine as humanitarian aid to the 133 hostages being held in Gaza. Porush stressed the aid should be sent before Monday evening to ensure the hostages will be able to use it to commemorate the Pesach holiday, even if only in a symbolic way. Receiving such aid would also raise their spirits and help them withstand these difficult times while being held captive until they are released.
Porush did say that we are hoping and praying the hostages will be released by then, before the holiday, but in the case that they aren't, this aid should be supplied.

Even if the request should be accepted, they will get it like they got the medications that were sent in a few months back... and how likely is it that Hamas will give wine to the hostages? But at the end of the day, all we can do is try, so good on him for requesting it.
And hopefully the matza will be the bread of freedom for them and be the harbinger for their release quickly and in the very near future.

Bring them home now!
Ari Rosenstein asks a good question:
I would extend the question a bit and suggest that considering the UN resolution just passed, Israel should cut off the current negotiations for a ceasefire deal with the exchange of 40 Israeli hostages for the proposed 700 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Why should there be an exchange of anything to get the hostages back and to obtain a ceasefire if both sides must adhere to a ceasefire and hostage return anyway?

send in the troops
So, once we went this route and have this crisis, whether you think it was a crisis created by the USA or one by Israel, if we are rejecting the United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire (and return of the hostages), does that mean Israel will immediately send in the troops to Rafah?
If the troops dont get sent in right away at this point, what was the point of this crisis?

Resolution questions
The relevant clause in the United Nations resolution passed today reads:
1. Demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain;
My question for the United Nations, or any international legal experts out there, is... are these considered separate issues or are they tied to each other by being in the same clause? Meaning, if Israel ceases fire as is being demanded of it, does Hamas have to release the hostages, and if they dont then Israel can go back to firing? Or will world pressure then move to Hamas? and vice versa? And being that this is for Ramadan, as specified in the clause, even if Israel ceases fire now, in two weeks when Ramadan is over it will be acceptable to restart the war?
There has been tremendous pressure on Israel; regarding Rafah in recent weeks, leading up to this resolution and the USA abstaining rather than vetoing - where is the massive world pressure on Hamas for their holding the hostages? Now that this resolution passed will we start to see an increase in pressure o Hamas?
And, a general question: the resolution says the demand for ceasefire is for Ramadan. That means in two weeks it will all be ok again. So, if Israel has waited this long anyway without going into Rafah, what's the big deal to wait another two weeks?

And, PM Netanyahu has followed through with his promise/threat. Netanyahu canceled the delegation to Washington. Defense Minister Galant is in Washington already and will continue with his scheduled meetings, but the delegation led by Ron Dermer has been called off.
Netanyahu was not bluffing. Let's see where this goes next

ceasefire and hostage resolution passed
ok, let's see what happens now.
The United Nations Security Council just passed its vote 14-0 for a ceasefire, and for the release of the hostages. While the two are not conditioned one on the other, it was passed in one resolution rather than in two separate resolutions. The United States abstained from the vote and did not veto. The resolution passed 14-0.
Was his bluff called or was he serious?
PM Netanyahu now cannot not cancel sending his delegation to Washington.
Can either side de-escalate this conflict or are we looking into the abyss?

gotta know when to hold em
Wow. I dont know if this increasing gap between the USA and Israel right now is unprecedented or not, but it is getting insane.
For some reason the USA is expected to not use its veto power in today's United Nations session in which the UN will pass a ceasefire resolution against Israel. The US is suggesting its strategy is to pass a ceasefire resolution and also a "return the hostages" resolution, each to stand on its own.
PM Benjamin Netanyahu is threatening, or maybe warning, the USA that if the US delegation does not veto the resolution, Israel will cancel sending the delegation to Washington for meetings and bring the delegation back to Israel. While I am not sure that is quite the threat Netanyahu thinks it is, it is still a significant threat on its own and a sign of the widening gap and deteriorating relations.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next day or two (and in the grander scheme of things over the next several months). All we can do is hope that it turns out for the best and that Netanyahu is The Gambler, knowing when to hold em and knowing when to fold em..
