6 million Jews in the Land of Israel. We are quickly approaching that number. Just think of it - 6 million Jews. This symbolic number is in stark contrast to the 6 million Jews that were killed in the Holocaust. 6 million Jews in Israel is a response to the Nazis, and to all who hate the Jews and Israel.

6 million Jews is a statement that we are back. We are here to stay. Nobody can wipe us out.

According to the statistics, we are currently at the number 5,996,500. We are 3500 short. The statisticians expect us to make up that shortfall within days. According to estimates taken in 2011, there are about 6.5 million Jews in the United States. That means we are also on the cusp of being the world's single largest concentration of Jews, and if those estimates are correct, we should hit that milestone in the not too distant future.

Another interesting statistic published is that 73% of Jewish Israelis are now born in Israel.

Will the fight over Daylight Savings Time, and turning it into a religious issue, finally be over? Unlikely, though we might get a brief respite.

The Knesset approved yesterday the final readings of the new law extending DST. From now on the clock will only be changed, moving off of DST, on the first Sunday after October 1. This will increase DST to about 193 days of the year, up from about the 182 days it has been in recent years. It also pretty much ensures that Yom Kippur will always fall out while the clocks are on DST, thus concluding the fast in the range of 7:00-7:30 PM instead of 6:00-6:30 PM.

I doubt we have heard the end of it, but I imagine after this victory they won't fight about it for the first year or two. Though within a couple of years I expect the issue will be raised, and fought about, again. Just like the last time the law was changed - it afforded a few years of quiet, and then the fights returned to extend it further.

In continuation of the bug-free lettuce growers that have been put on warning by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar due to the high amount (and type) of pesticides used, the Rabbanut has officially taken the next step, which is really the only logical thing for them to have done.

The Rabbanut sent out a special update on their email list announcing a clarification of how this is going to work. The update says that in light of Rav Amar's decision, the Rabbanut has decided to deal with the issue. They are telling the various kashrut organizations that give hechsherim to these companies (and there are a lot, as you can tell from looking at any given bag of bug-free lettuce - each bag has about half a dozen hechsherim) that they should make their hechsher conditional on being supervised by the Ministry of Health via laboratory inspections. To clarify, the Rabbanut will not give a hechsher to any food establishment that purchases such vegetables that are not under supervision.

So, while until now one could say that these "kosher" pesticides with a little bit of lettuce were treated similar to the way they treat bleach, being that they give it a hechsher because it's not "not-kosher" and the companies want it and are willing to pay for it, now they are no longer going to do so. Now the food better actually be safely edible to get a hechsher, and not poisonous. I wonder if they will next remove the hechsher from bleach and laundry detergent..

I find it interesting that MBD ascribes some sort of mystical protection to the fact that the pictures of the rebbes were not touched by the water, yet shortly after they talk about tallis and teffilin of people that were destroyed by the water. Are the pictures more holy, and therefore get more protection, than the tefillin?

Anyway, people in the area are in great need right now...
