Proposed Law: Hospital Parking Lots

MK Omer Yankelovitch (Kachol Lavan) has proposed a law that would put an end to the exorbitant parking fees collected in hospital parking lots.

Yankelovitch is proposing that the Ministers of Health and of Transportation should, together I guess, set the maximum limit that hospitals are allowed to charge for parking. The Ministry of Health has previously determined that hospitals should charge no more than 20nis per day for parking, yet the hospitals ignore the unenforced directives and charge exorbitant prices. Her proposal is that parking fees should be limited to 15nis per hour and 40nis per day.

As the occasional consumer of hospital parking, thankfully not often, I concur that they charge ridiculously high parking fees, and are basically taking advantage of a captive, and often desperate, public that has no other choice..

  1. This was one in Ontario with positive results. The only complaint that I heard about, was that some hospitals that had reasonable parking rates, increased their fees to match the cap.

  2. I dont think that would be a real issue here. I challenge you to find me a hospital here with parking rates lower than whatever a potential cap might be :-)

  3. The first link was an explanation of what the rules are, including mandatory parking pass options for long term patients. The 2nd link is an analysis of what happened in Ontario, as Quebec is looking at considering copying the same model.

Overall the program is a success and issues that one might be concerned about when interfering with free market pricing, did not materialize.

I would also love to see a solution to parking at Bnai Tzion Medical Center which doesn't have a parking lot. I wonder if there are other hospitals in the country with the same issue.
