Because most non-Jews and even secular Jews think all the religious' people are the same and all Chasidim and don't get all the different sectors. She also isn't getting that this isn't emptying the Yeshivot. From what I can read, the Haredim who volunteered to enlist are mostly married men with children. Which is certainly hard but doesn't really affect the draft deferment question unless the government wants to think outside the box, forget about the 18-23 bochurim and look hard at encouraging enlistments of older marrieds. They won't be influencing their values as much but it will change some things. I understand the Air Force actually had a fairly successful program like that. The expense of enlisting married men with children was offset by the fact that they had a fairly high rate of retention.
