the summer of weird foods

If you are going to be celebrating your July 4th holiday by barbecuing some good ole gefilta dogs, you might want to wash them down with a nice refreshing ketchup ice pop for dessert.

It seems as this summer is the summer of weird foods.

Manischewitz announced their fish dog (probably a joke) a couple of weeks ago, and French's has now announced their ketchup popsicles.

game:

   goes with

like what goes with what?

The ketchup popsicle seems to be only available in Canada, for now. Maybe the Canadians deserve this.

Uber in Israel

We like to say in Israel that Uber doesn't operate here, and that is sort of true, but only sort of.

Uber has operated in Israel before, and according to JPost is now relaunching its operations in Israel. But Uber operates in Israel on a different model than it operates in the USA. Israel does not allow ride-sharing systems, aka the way Uber operates in the USA and its native model of operations. Israel is concerned about protecting the taxi drivers and have therefore not allowed the classic ride-sharing systems to operate in Israel.

The way Uber has and will operate in Israel, for now, is via the taxi drivers. The way GETT works in Israel. Uber functions in Israel, with the app and all, but only taxi drivers do the driving, not any Tom Dick or Harry, or maybe not any Moshiko, Udi or Yaniv.

So, yes, Uber is in Israel, but maybe not exactly the way you think it means.

blowing your nose at the Kotel

"which came first - the chicken or the egg?"

do Haredi activists and action seekers go down to the "Reform kotel" and fight with worshippers there because the Women of the Wall have been making their minyan at the Kotel or do the Women of the Wall make their disruptive minyanim at the Kotel because Haredim go down and disturb worshippers at the Reform Kotel?

When the WoW and other groups fight over the Kotel area they are told to go down to the area designated for them - the Reform Kotel as it has come to be known. When people use the egalitarian area the Haredim come down (sometimes) and ight with them and make trouble down there.
According to TOI, dozens of extremists, though from the pictures they just look like regular Haredi people not like how we normally think of who the extremists are, went down to the egalitarian plaza and disrupted a bar mitzva in process calling the people names, blowing whistles and tearing up their siddurim.

The unique part of this story, that on its own happens often enough that it might not even be notable, is that one young man tore out some pages form a siddur and then used the pages to blow his nose.
do they go there and provoke because they go there or do they go there and provoke because they go there? I dont know the answer to the question, but I am not sure it matters. You really have to go out of your way to go to the egalitarian plaza and bother people who you prefer do their thing there rather than at the main kotel plaza...

Interesting Psak: Medical Marijuana

hattip to VIN

This kol koreh signed by the batei din of Rav Wosner and Rav Nissim Krelitz, along with other rbbonim in the Haredi community. The kol koreh says that this psak must be announced because in recent years doctors have been giving permits for use of medical marijuana even in light cases. They stress that ti is prohibited as a drug no matter the situation or type, even as a one time thing, This is a drug that takes people out of their senses and leads to sin and to worse drugs and issues and eventually destroys the person. The only time medical marijuana can possibly be considered is in a case of minimally safek pikuach nefesh and even then one cannot rely on the doctors but must ask a rav certified in the field. Thos e who sell and market this product to healthy people are violating Torah commandments and are causing people to sin...

So no medical marijuana according to this.

Ben & Jerry's grumbling

People are still upset with Ben & Jerry's, despite Unilever capitulating and overruling the B&J board of directors decision and reversing the ban on Israel and renewing the contract with Avi Zinger for production and distribution in Israel. Why? Because the board of B&J released an angry statement saying they disagree with the decision blah blah blah.

Personally, I dont care what they think. The fact is, at the end of the day, Unilever made a decision to override the B&J board and get back to business instead of politics. The fact that some Ben and Jerry's people are upset about that does not bother me. In my mind they are a coupl eof grumpy old men who lost. They are saving face saying we disagree with the reversal, but what they are saying is meaningless. I see no need to think about them any longer, and no need to boycott their products (even outside of Israel).

They lost. What they say is meaningless at this point. The decision was taken out of their hands. I dont care what they think, if their thinking it has no ramifications. I am not in the business of mind control - I dont care what people think, and I dont have a need to force them to change their minds..

Tweet of the Day

Translation:

Aryeh Deri tweets:
A Prime Minister who does not go to the Kotel, the last remains of our Temple, after his appointment to say words of prayer, and a Prime Minister who in his first speech does not say the words "b'ezrat hashem" - with God's help, causes us, the Jewish and faithful camp, difficult feelings. The Kotel and our faith in the Creator, are what make us unique as a Jewish State from among all the nations.

Deri in his tweet refers to Yair Lapid's appointment as PM and not immediately going to the Kotel but to Yad Vashem, and not saying b'ezrat hashem in his speech. Lapid is one of the symbols of secularism in Israel. This brings to mind that in the past Lapid has said to Haredi MKs - we dont work for you, in other words he has no sense of need to do things just to make the Haredi parties happy, like saying things like with God's help and going to the Kotel, when he doesnt really believe in them himself.

Additionally, when Ayelet Shaked recently went to the Kotel after being appointed head of Yamina upon Bennett's resignation, and any time coalition members did religious things publicly, they were scoffed and laughed to by Deri's people as if they have no right to do anything religious while being part of such a government. So if they do stuff like that it is bad and if they dont it is bad.

While I would like to see Lapid, or anybody, do such things, I would want them to be doing it on their own because they want to, not just to make the Haredi MKs happy. I like his attitude of "we dont work for you", and it is more important he work for the people than do things just for appearance's sake.
