Facebook Status of the Day
This post is from Moshe Koppel, head of the Kohelet Forum, upon whose conclusions the judicial reforms were based... the post is interesting and provides food for thought for its opponents but also, I think, misses the boat on some aspects and might allay some fears while not allaying, or maybe even increasing, others...
Translation:
To my friends on the left (without any cynicism, I really have a lot of friends on the Left), it seems that sometimes I need to say things that I thought were obvious on their own but it turns out they are not, so here goes:
1. I am completely in favor of (almost) complete freedom. Not because I am a big tzaddik but at least from the perspective that I understand that if you dont have freedom then I also wont have it. And also because I actually believe in it.
2. I have noticed that sometimes there are people on "my side" that say stupid things, do stupid things, and use their power granted by the State and taxpayer money to advance their own personal or party interests. And that is disgusting.
3. I understand that you are afraid because of these people and because of the freedoms they might trample. I am as well.
4. I understand that at times you feel like suckers because you serve in the army and pay taxes, and there are others that do so less. You are not the only ones that serve and pay taxes, definitely not, but I understand.
5. Still, despite all that, you are mistaken. Most elected officials do not agree with the more extreme things, because they want to be re-elected and the public very much values freedoms, even if only their own freedoms. Pay attention that when insane suggestions are made on the Right every now and again, they are almost immediately shot down and specifically by others on the Right.
6. You are mistaken if you think that because the justices and Attorney General today look and think like you they will protect your freedoms. A small group of people that have too much power, that does not need to be elected, are very much able to one day discriminate and limit people's freedoms. And they do it, though maybe you have not noticed because so far they have not done it to you. We should not give them too much power because when they are above the law they are dangerous. And take into account that today they are more similar to you but tomorrow they might not be.
7. We need to find an arrangement that will be more appropriate behind the scenes. Meaning, when neither you nor I know who the judges will be more like and who the MKs will be more like. That requires compromises.
8. It is possible. Let it be.

brilliant move Yinon Magal
I have been keeping an eye on the Strauss-Channel 14 situation with some interest.
Strauss decided to stop advertising on Channel 14 after one of their panelists expressed his opinion that Yigal Amir should not be serving a life sentence but should be let out to some applause. Even though Channel 14 censured the advocate, Strauss pulled their advertising from the station.
What I find amazing is that somehow Yinon Magal turned it into an ideological battle with Strauss being against all the viewers of Channel 14 and their viewers have bought into it and many are looking for ways to boycott Strauss products. Magal took a consumer issue of losing a big client and its advertising money and turned it into an issue of they discount and dismiss all our viewers because we support the reforms and the government, etc...and the people, many of them, bought into it.
Personally, I dont see why I should care where they do or dont advertise. I wish nobody would advertise on any station. On the internet whenever possible I skip the ads. I do not have a television so I dont watch Channel 14 just like I dont watch Channel 11, 12, 13 or whatever other channels are you there. On the internet I get my news fairly equally from all the sources, checking both conservative and liberal sites fairly equally to keep abreast of the news. And no, I dont want to see any companies advertisements.
According to Magal, we need to be upset that we suddenly cant see Strauss's advertisements - I personally wish all the companies would stop advertising on all the channels (that would mean less programming, etc, I know, but I still dont have to like the ads and can wish for them to all go away). Yet people who skip ads whenever possible are suddenly fighting because a company stopped advertising. And they have been led to believe they are fighting a moral battle, when it is just Channel; 14 upset at the loss of ad revenue. Brilliant move by Yinon Magal.

separate swimming pilot in nature begins next week
As announced a few months ago, Minister Idit Silman has decided to run a pilot arranging separate swimming hours at some springs around Israel, to be more accessible to the religious public, the religious hikers. I guess depending on the results of the pilot the program will either be expanded or cut...
Anyway, that pilot is starting next week after a couple months of planning.
Minister of Environmental Protection Idit Silman that as of next week two springs will be designated for separate swimming, but it will not affect the general public, as it will be after the official access hours have finished for the day.
The two springs where the pilot will be running are Ein Hanya, located in the Judean Hills outside of Jerusalem, and Einot Tzukim, located in the northwestern area of the Dead Sea.
I think we only have partial information, as far as I can find from the information publicized, but here is what we know so far as to how this will work.
These two springs have normal operating hours of 8am until 5pm, after which they officially close. So as not to affect the general public, those hours will continue to be open to the general public. Two days a week, after those hours, the springs will be open to the religious public with separate swimming.
On Thursdays Ein Hanya hours will be expanded for the general public until 7:30pm (during the month of August) and on Sundays and Wednesdays Ein Hanya will be open from 5-8pm only to separate swimming.
Einot Tzukim seems to have a different issue with the wildlife of the area enjoying the spring in the evening, so separate hours there will be available early in the morning instead. On Wednesday and Thursday mornings, during the month of August, the spring will be open for separate swimming between the hours of 6:30-8am.
What we dont know, or what I dont know, and dont see specified in the information provided, is how the separate swimming will work. Will half the time be allocated for men and half the time for women? Will it be one day for men and one day for women? Will it be enforced somehow with someone official there making sure people dont make trouble and women swim when it is set for women and men when set for men or will it be an honor system of sorts?
I have no problem with this if they can make it work without being a disturbance. As I said, I dont get how the separate swimming will work, and I dont see how a religious family out for a trip can benefit much from this. Of course if it is a group of just men or just women going out to enjoy the spring that will work, but a religious family out hiking and only the men or only the women being allowed to go in does not seem like much of a benefit or much of an attraction.
According to Israel Hayom, some organizations have already sent warning letters and are saying they will petition the Supreme Court over this...we'll see what happens with that as it progresses...
