Does Aryeh Deri not care about Judaism?
There is a lot of criticism against Aryeh Deri for pushing through the reversal of the conversion law and the transferring of the system of dayanim back to the PMO from the Justice Ministry, as had been agreed upon during the coalition negotiations. The criticism is also against those who support Deri and these new laws, and those who just did not make a big deal out of it.
Apparently, nobody who supports Deri's action on this, as well as those who don't actively oppose it, don't care about the state of Judaism. They don't care about converts. They are not interested. They are happy to be mean to potential converts, to chase them away.
Nobody holds the monopoly on caring about Judaism and/or converts. Just because someone does something differently it does not mean they do not care, but they have a different solution, maybe taking into account different factors.
Maybe Aryeh Deri does not care about converts and Judaism. Maybe all he cares about is jobs and power for his friends and relatives.
Or maybe Aryeh Deri also does care about Judaism. Maybe Aryeh Deri does care about converts. Maybe he just has a different way about solving the issues.
I have no problem disagreeing with Aryeh Deri's methods - I am definitely no fan of his, or the methods of anybody else for that matter. I just do not think the criticism is fair, claiming he does not care about Judaism or converts just because he does not agree with the solutions of those critics. I would posit that he does care but just does not agree with the other solutions (such as the law passed by Elazar Stern and Yair Lapid) and believes his own solutions are better.

He is a politician first and that's what matters, first to him. These politicians are seemingly being threatened to vote a certain way, now the state is trying to be like the 'nations'. When Torah/Judaism will mean more to them than their positions, then truth and justice will prevail.
ReplyDeleteYou miss the entire point of the switharoo...it's all about appointing his followers to the jobs and the rest is b.s. Bennett just had his head handed to him by Netanyahu who had to pre-approve the the proposal. Let's see if he is man enough and dedicated to his followers who elected him to pull out of the coalition. This is no small issue for the religious parties. How can he justify himself to voters next time around.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. this was all known in advance. it was part of the coalition agreements. Bennet knew about it from day 1. He was given approval then that he would be able to vote against, and his vote against was allowed, as the proposal was sure to pass anyway. Nothing here happened that was not already agreed upon half a year ago.

Haredi parties made it CLEAR FROM THE BEGINNING that if they did not get this, they would sign the death warrants of our IDF-serving children (excuse me, support Buji + the looney left who would give away land to Hamas/ISIS/Iran). Deri has a TRACK RECORD of doing this -- see 1992-1996 Sha$-LO gov't.
ReplyDeleteCONCLUSION --> the blood of our children is more important than anything, though it certainly breaks my heart to see Deri + co. drive more ordinary Israeli away from Judiasm. If the left would have gotten 10 seats less, we wouldn't have to put up with this.
I don't get what the issue is. This is part of the coalition agreements. The BY accepted it when they were one of the last to be asked to get on board. And while Ariel is quiet on this conversion issue, the other Tekuma MK Bezalel has clearly voiced not supporting the bill (and who knows what the other BY MKs think?) so this is apperantly not an issue the BY is going to put it's foot down, and perhaps glad to get it out of the way. Tzohar is clearly a liability to the BY which lost big time in pushing Rav Stav.
