Quote of the Day
If [Netanyahu] puts up a candidate from the Likud for mayor of Jerusalem, only he, his wife and his two children will be voting for him..I want to mention that in the previous elections the Likud only received one mandate..
-- Minister Aryeh Deri, about the possibility of Netanyahu putting up Zeev Elkin, or someone else, for the position of mayor of Jerusalem, saying the Likud power in Jerusalem is negligible.. Deri later apologized for the way he said it. Considering Deri's own situation with Shas and the polls regarding national elections that will be shortly after municipal elections (if not earlier), he shouldn't be scoffing at other parties weaknesses... and besides, despite the Likud's weakness in Jerusalem, they still held the seat of mayor with Nir Barkat

The Likud got one mandate, but the holder of that mandate was Likud's semi-official (through Yisrael Beiteinu) and- let's not forget- Shas's candidate for mayor and did pretty well (despite losing, thankfully). (Barkat wasn't officially in Likud then, and Yisrael Beiteinu and Likud were the same list.)
ReplyDeleteThe national parties tend not to do so well in local elections anyway.
Whoever wins in Jerusalem, it's not going to be a Shas person. At most it may be Leon with Shas support, but he's not Shas. More likely it will be a Likud (Elkin) or UTJ person, God help us. Barkat spoiled us.
