the modern day boys who cried wolf

As reported by Avi Rabina on Twitter, at a hafgana in Jerusalem today, protesters were trying to save one of their friends and fellow protesters from being arrested. They were trying to scare off the police by calling out "Autist", as if warning the cops to lay off that guy because he is autistic. This is in light of the recent hafgana in which police beat up an autistic kid.

Here is the tweet with footage from the hafgana:

1. (to scoff at the police a bit because they have refused to investigate the previous case), the police don't care and screaming "autist" isn't going to stop them from beating him up and arresting him. Perhaps it might even have the opposite effect!

2. They are now like the boy who cried wolf. If this will be a new tactic used at hafganot to avoid arrest, when there is another situation and the police dont realize someone involved is autistic, they will just ignore the warnings - like the boy who cried wolf.

  1. Not that it makes a difference, but the boy who was brutally handled by the police on lag B'Omer was not Autistic (or "on the spectrum") but had other learning disabilities. I heard his father on the radio who was upset that people automatically called him autistic as if all kids with special needs are the same and it doesn't matter what their issue is.

  2. thanks for clarifying. I was not aware of that. Just that the news reported he was autistic

  3. I clearly recall Rav Yaakov Weinberg (rosh yeshiva of Ner Israel in Baltimore) speaking about soldiers in a war waving a white flag as they approach the enemy and just as they get close, dropping the flag, picking up guns, and opening fire. Instead of a clever tactic, that would rightly be viewed as disgusting and unacceptable.

Rav Weinberg said something like that is not just a perversion of the rules of war between a few soldiers, much more importantly, it's an attack on every future legitimate use of the white flag of surrender, which would now be suspect and possibly ignored, causing harm to people who otherwise would have survived.

The same idea with these cries of "autist". They are guilty of any harm c'v that comes to anyone needing special treatment, whether for who they are or while injured, who the police may harshly treat by not believing the claim.

  4. Rafi, you really should proofread your posts before posting them. Do you really mean that the police "eat someone up" and then "arrest them"?
