police violently break up wedding after government votes againt investigating police violence

A short while there was in incident in Jerusalem in which police went into a house to break up an illegal wedding.

I haven't seen any details of what happened in the house that led to violence, but it turned violent, and the police smashed some heads. The video was pretty disturbing. Lots of blood on one or two people, plus other people pushed over and general mayhem. I don't know what possibly could have been done at this incident to justify such harsh violence, but whatever happened happened. the police spokesperson released a statement saying vaguely the crowd gathered around the police and started attacking them. Maybe they felt threatened. Whatever.

Obviously the Haredi MKs have been releasing harsh statements condemning the police. The most interesting is that of Minister Aryeh Deri.

Deri said, "The incident at the wedding this evening in Givat Zeev in Jerusalem was shocking. There is no reason in the world that police should break into a house with guns drawn and injure people. Tonight I will turn to the Prime Minister and demand a thorough investigation into this serious incident and an end to the police violence."

Why is this interesting to me?

Besides for the fact that there are plenty of reason to break into a house and injure people. Most of those reasons seemingly don't apply here.

Just today, Mk Pindrus (UTJ) proposed a law to set up an investigative committee to look into the police actions and recent violence. The coalition decided to not support the proposal of UTJ and voted against the proposal. Aryeh Deri and Shas voted against as well.

So this afternoon he voted against looking into the police violence, but now he is going to demand Netanyahu set up a committee to look into the violence. At least admit in your statement that you made a mistake.

Besides for that, perhaps the police felt some backing for their overly violent approach of recent weeks (maybe longer) by the government voting against such a committee earlier today. Maybe they took that as a message from the government that their tactics are acceptable.

  1. Fun fact from a friend who lives in Givat Zeev, close enough to hear the music. The party continued after the police left.
