peace with Syria...
whoa, this is big news if true...
the current formation of Syria is interested in making peace with Israel and joining the Abraham Accords....
there will need to be negotiations of course, and they, and surely Israel, will have their demands, but just being open to the idea and possibility is big news... and the conditions mentioned in the article don't see to be too difficult for this to be possible...
I wonder if Turkiyy/Turkey will get upset about this and try to prevent it...

Or it will collapse with "We, the leaders of Syria, will make peace with Israel. All Israel has to do is withdraw to the 1949 armistice borders."
ReplyDeleteyeah, it probably wont happen that fast or that easily as depicted in the article, but interesting that it is being put on the table now
DeleteThey don't want the 1949 borders, as they (really the border settled on in the 1920's) gave Israel the eastern shore of the Kinneret. For the next 19 years Syria crept forward centimeter by centimeter until they were at the waterline. Since then they've demanded a return to the 1967 line.
DeleteConsidering what a fine shape Syria is in now, Israel should offer *them* peace in exchange for them recognizing as Israeli all the land (including the DMZ) Israel currently holds, plus a bit more.
Oh hell, they should enter the talks with "We're keeping Golan, we'll give you that extra security zone back but the first sign of trouble, we'll reoccupy it. Also there's the matter of compensation from the destroyed Jewish communites that you oweus."
DeleteJust keep writing "Turkey." There's absolutely no reason you should feel obligated to write it in Turkish just because their dictator wants you to. Plus you can't do it on a standard keyboard and you didn't get it right here even though you tried. (It's "Türkiye".) So best not to bother.
ReplyDeleteI mean, it's not like the rest of world calls us ישראל or even "Yisrael." Not that they should be expected to. Do you call China "Zhōnghuá" (or "中华")? India "Bhārat"?
point taken (though I didnt know China or India had different official names)
