Maybe Assad left Syria, maybe he did not. That seems to be unclear and in dispute right now. Some are saying his plane may have even crashed when escaping. Nothing is completely clear at this point.
Regardless of where Assad may be, I am not sure rebel forces chasing him out of Damascus and into hiding (and maybe further) can fairly be categorized and described as "Assad ordered a non-violent transfer of power"...

Proposed Law: Poetic Justice
There not too many details available at this time, but the IDF has announced several times that it has captured massive amounts of military equipment, weapons, armaments, from Hezbollah in Lebanon. Much of the weaponry captured was supplied originally by Russia.
The question is what to do with all that [possibly] valuable stuff.
From what I understand, Israel won't use at least much of it due to Israel's policy of only using NATO-approved weapons. Destroying it seems to be wasteful, though if there is no other use for it that is what the IDF will continue to do.
MK Dan Ilouz (Likud) has proposed a law by which any of these captured Russian-supplied weapons and equipment that the IDF will not use should be transferred to Ukraine to use in its battle against Russia.
So, the IDF gets first dibs to put whatever it feels it can use into use in its own military efforts.
After the IDF decides it has taken what it will and has no use for the rest, the Defense Ministry should find a way to securely send the rest to Ukraine to use in its war against Russia.
Interestingly, Ilouz writes in the text of the proposal a couple of interesting points.
First, Ilouz explains that this is in order to maintain security stability in the region and internationally and "to assist countries fighting for their sovereignty", Israel should transfer these weapons to Ukraine, etc...
I hope this text won't come back to be used against Israel, as other countries will defend their support for the Palestinians as a country fighting for its sovereignty which the Israeli Right supports while pointing to this law.
Second, Ilouz calls this poetic justice - supporting allies internationally against those who supply our terrorist enemies with weapons with those very weapons. And this would be a poetic justice.

true or fake news? does it matter?
Syria and Russia are now denying it but earlier today PM Netanyahu announced that Israel would send humanitarian aid to Syria as well to help with the fallout from the earthquake. The request had supposedly been made by Russia on behalf of Syria, and not by Syria itself.
First Syria denied it, and then Russia denied it as well, though Israel is still insisting it is true.
Not having any way of knowing whom to believe, all I can say is I would completely understand why Russia and Syria must deny it. Not that that tells us much.
I would like to think that stepping up during such a time of crisis, even for an enemy, is a good thing and something that can perhaps effect a thawing of bad relations later when the crisis dies down. I dont know if it is true or fake news, but I can hope it is true and that something good will come out of it.

Let My People Go!
The Jerusalem post is reporting that the Russian government has ordered the Jewish Agency to cease all activity and operations within Russia. There are concerns that this will affect thousands of Russians who are waiting to make aliya.
Some are dredging up history and suggesting this might be the start of another Iron Curtain situation coming into effect in Russia. Anonymous sources from within the Jewish community talk about arrests and that people in the community fear for their lives. There is no word yet the Jewish activity within Russia is being curtailed, but locking the gates is a bad start.
All I can say is that I hope this is an exaggeration. even if Putin is over-reacting and has gone perhaps a bit crazy due to the ongoing war with Ukraine, I hope he wont be crazy enough to bring us back to the days of Soviet Russia and the Iron Curtain.

Osem Ketchup giving up mehadrin hechsher
who knew that ketchup would be the big victim of the Russia Ukraine War and of Shmitta?
According to Israel Hayom, Osem produces it ketchup from tomato concentrate mostly produced int he Ukraine. With the war ongoing, Ukraine has been unable to supply the product, making it difficult for Osem to produce their ketchup.
The alternative they found was to produce the tomato concentrate here in Israel. They then discovered that this might be ok for the general market as they can use tomatoes and tomato concentrates from hetter mechira produce, but the Haredi market would ot accept that at all.
According to the report, Osem has enough stock left to last a couple of months but new production is all going to be using hetter mechira produce for the foreseeable future and their ketchup will not bear a mehadrin kashrut certification. They are looking for alternatives.
So pay attention to the ketchup you buy, if that matters to you. Make sure it has a hechsher you rely on.
I am not sure why Israel and Ukraine are the only two choices. If they could buy from the Ukraine, there must be somewhere else they can buy from now to avoid the hetter mechira issue.

mass grave found in Ukraine
an Israeli reporter revealed a fresh mass grave in Bucha, Ukraine,a town just outside of Kyiv. The fresh mass grave of nearly 300 Ukrainians murdered by Russians is shocking and horrifying. And no, I wont be posting images or video of the report. I dont have anything exciting to say about this but I was horrified when I saw the report. I hope Putin is stopped and pays for his war crimes.

I dont think I ever realized the Ukrainians had such a good sense of humor. Maybe having a comedian as President has helped with that somewhat.
Ukrainian authorities have now announced that citizens that capture Russian tanks and armored vehicles do not need to report them to the tax authorities! The value isnt great enough. No need to worry about taxes, just stay calm and keep fighting the Russians.
New cars for everyone! Heavy cars, but still...
In Israel they would probably charge 120% tax plus linkage to the cost of living increases...

This is pretty funny. Good on Ukraine for being so creative... not sure why they arent holding these POWs for leverage, but I guess embarrassing the Russkies is also important...

Ukraine invites Russian mothers to collect their sons captured on the battlefield
Ukraine on Wednesday invited the worried mothers of Russian troops captured on the battlefield to come and collect their sons, in an apparent attempt to embarrass Moscow.
“A decision has been made to hand over captured Russian troops to their mothers if they come to collect them in Ukraine, in Kyiv,” the defense ministry said in a statement.
A week into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv claims to have captured dozens of Russian servicemen, and cellphone videos have been circling online of bewildered and disarmed young men in uniform.
Ukraine has sought to undermine Russian public support for the invasion by opening a telephone hotline for Russian parents to find out if their sons are among the dead or captured.
The defense ministry has published telephone numbers and an email address to provide information about captured Russians, and mothers will be invited to Kyiv to collect their missing sons.
You will be received and taken to Kyiv where your son will be returned to you,” the ministry statement said.

So World Taekwando, the International Federation that governs the sport of Taekwando, has announced that it is revoking the honorary 9th level dan black belt that had been awarded to Vladimir Putin in 2013. I guess he had already qualified for 8th level dan black belt all on his own.
This is part of the stepping up of sanctions due to the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. more and more countries and organizations are joining the sanctions.
This feels like some yeshivas that give smicha to qualifying students but include a condition that they have the right to revoke it, if need be. I have heard of such a revocation once, for a student who many years later left the frum community and did some very public things that the institution wanted to disassociate from....

Israel and the Russian war on Ukraine
I dont understand what the Russian invasion of Ukraine is really about, though I have read some theories and analyses. I do understand, in my own mind at least even if it is not any official position, though why Israel is waffling in its response to this war far away but with local repercussions. And I don't even just mean the official Israel position but also a lot of individual Israelis, at least this is my impression.
From a practical matter, Russia is very influential in these parts of the world. With Russia basically controlling Syria, we cannot get on Russia's bad side, especially when we need their silent acquiescence to act in Syria and Lebanon against Iranian interests. That plus Russia being a big and powerful country with some sort of relationship that we want to keep.. Those are the practicals, but I do not think that is the main reason.
On the one hand, Russia is being an aggressor and invading the much smaller Ukraine and there is little Ukraine can do about it. And the reasons are not well understood by anybody. Russia is breaking agreements along the way, and the West not coming to Ukraine's defense makes Russia just look like an aggressive bully rolling over the little shrimp. So everyone wants to criticize Russia because they come off really bad here. If Putin cared at all about what other people think he would have started with a great marketing and public relations campaign to explain why this is justified, but he didnt, so he just looks like an aggressive bully.
On the other hand, we are Israel. We get accused of almost the exact same thing, though the circumstances are different and the world response is different, but my theory is that in the Middle East most of the world sees Israel as an aggressor having "invaded" Palestine, in some way, and taken land for themselves from a smaller and weaker group of people. I think that many Israelis and maybe the government feel uncomfortable criticizing Russia for something very similar to what the world criticizes Israel for, even if the circumstances are different.
(Why the world does not take moves against Russia the way it does against Israel is a different discussion)

the safe haven
War is never a good thing and not something we should ever want or support. Sometimes it might be necessary, at least from one perspective, but that doesnt make it good. I hope the world does not end up going to war over there with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine heating up. I don't feign to know or understand what is the real cause of the conflict over there.
Israeli leadership has been calling for the Jews in the region to leave to come to safety in Israel, specifically the Israeli citizens who are there but not just. Not many people have left, to this point, but as the tension escalates more will surely leave.
Obviously they do not have to, and such calls from Israeli leadership are simply offers of assistance and encouragement and not statements of obligation or demands. Nobody has to leave, but Israel is offering itself as a safe haven.
This is precisely what Israel was founded for. To be a safe haven for Jews.
