Bet Shemesh still fails to keep the court decision

The ongoing saga of the tzniyus signs in Bet Shemesh (mostly RBS B) and the courts requiring the city to have them removed is still ongoing.

While I really don't understand the political crisis that happened in Bet Shemesh yesterday with Mayor Dr Aliza Bloch firing half her coalition, it seems like a lot of bad timing in Bet Shemesh right now.

According to Kikar, the courts are demanding a solution now to the tzniyus signs, as the saga has gone on for more than 5 years.

Of course the city blames the lack of budget and the lack of cooperation of the police, and the police blame City Hall for their lack of cooperation. Bloch talked a lot of about the path to success would be dialogue with the residents, but that has gotten her nowhere, in this realm.

Basically nothing significant has gotten done about this, and the courts say it has gone on long enough.

I don't even know what can be done about it. As soon as it became a fight it seemed to become more impossible than even just ignoring it. These signs are part of their holy culture, and taking it down becomes a religious battle in which they will never give up.

The only question is what the courts will do in light of the repeated failure of the City to keep to the rulings, even if it is at no fault of their own and not for lack of trying.

Solar Eclipse as a bad omen

Yesterday morning there was a partial solar eclipse. The next eclipse is coming in seven years, and supposedly, from what I have read, that one will be a major eclipse with a majority of the sun covered. Yesterday's partial eclipse was relatively small, with the sun looking sort of like a Pac-Man.

I took advantage to teach my granddaughter about the eclipse:

In Judaism an eclipse is considered a bad sign for the world. I don't really know why. I never understood these symbols, acts of nature, as being bad (or good) signs. It never made much sense to me as nowadays we know well in advance of the natural act that is going to happen. Maybe a couple thousand years ago it was unexpected and they thought it had meaning, but nowadays we know when will be an eclipse and when will be a blood moon and when Venus will be visible and when this or that will happen, so I am not sure why it needs to be a bad sign.

But the Gemara says it is a bad sign for the world, so whether I understand it or not, that's what it is.

We are halfway through 2020 (5780), and with everything we have already experienced this year - NOW THE HEAVENS ARE SENDING US A SIGN???? Why not send the sign before 2020 began? And if after all this year has already brought us we are getting a sign of bad tidings now, we should probably really be concerned about what lays in store ahead for us!

and yes, whenever I hear about an eclipse I think of the Bonnie Tyler song Total Eclipse of the Heart..

Former Mayor of Bet Shemesh MK Moshe Abutbol tried to explain to the courts a thousand times that there is no chance the signs can be removed from the city. Yesterday we once again we saw the shameful sight of Mayor Aliza Bloch and the police trying to remove the signs, and in the spirit of the plague of frogs the extremists expanded the number of signs more and more.
Who can explain to Justice Hanan Meltzer who threatened Abutbol with jail time that Abutbol was right?

It is a problem. They need to come up with a creative solution. Bloch even tried to compromise and had a sign put up that asked people to be sensitive to the neighborhood norms (without saying anything about modesty or women) but the extremists took it down and put their own back up, with many more all over and increased graffiti, even graffiti that was very nasty and inappropriate.

Provoke them and it gets worse. Gadassi, and Abutbol, has a point. But do we allow all criminals to just keep doing what they are doing because if we try to stop them they will increase their criminal activity in return? They need to find solutions. That's why they get paid the big bucks. I don't think leaving them be is a solution. Maybe if they lived in a secluded corner of town with nobody necessarily going through their neighborhood. But they live on a main artery from RBS to BS, and that makes this more problematic.

Discriminatory toilets

I was in a hotel the other day for a wedding.. this poorly worded sign was in the bathroom..

Instead of saying the toilets should not be used on Shabbos by those who are shabbos observant, it just says shabbos observant people are not allowed to use them.. even on a Sunday or Wednesday? What do the toilets have against religious people?

A Bet Shemesh election signs photoblog roundup

You might be a person who is persuaded by political signs (are there really such people?), or maybe you just like to see the creativity, or maybe you like the social aspect - seeing who has more posters in which part of town and the different types of posters that are featured in different neighborhoods...

I went around Bet Shemesh a bit and took pictures of election posters...

Even the people who don't want to vote in the election get into the posters war... there weren't even that many of them. maybe this will increase in the coming days

Resido Center is voting Abutbol because it is hoping to get cleaned up, as per his campaign

I think green is the best color and makes for the most visible signs, so Moshe Abutbol gets the prize for that

yellow is also a snazzy color for signs. too bad the Hassidim don't have too many around town

I don't know who they think is scared, and I don't know who put this up, but based on the colors I will assume it is the Clal Hassidi people

Aguda

I think TOV gets the prize for the most creative way of hanging a sign

Balayish has a lot of posters in Bet Shemesh. The few posters he has in RBS went up because of his alliance with Chabad

Kol Shachar

Shas had surprisingly few posters around town. I suspect they have been focusing on Moshe Abutbol's mayoral campaign and less on the party campaign

Degel took a page out of Shas's books.. vote for us to give the rabbonim honor

its either an election ad or they are modeling for Brooks Brothers

Motti Cohen

I think he looks better without the glasses and the cross

people who use lampposts are expected to vote in droves for Moshe Abutbol. He is clearly the king of the lampposts (though not the only player in that arena)
