Interesting Psak: No Tachanun

INN brings an interesting psak from Rav Dovid Chai HaCohen, rav of the Orot Hotorah community in Bat Yam and leading student of Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook, as a result of yesterday's elections.

Rav Doci Chai HaCohen paskened that tachanun should not be said today, Wednesday, due to the great joy resulting in the results of the elections. Yesterday the rav had people come to daven, say slichos, blow shofar and pray for the success of the national camp in the elections. After the results became clear, the rav declared today to be a Day of Praise and Gratitude.

UPDATE:
And now Kikar is bringing the psak of Rav Meir Mazuz to not say tachanun today at mincha to recognize the joy of the electoral victory.

Gevalt!

the gevald campaigns are funny, and they are especially funny in how they contradict each other.

Netanyahu/Likud is crying gevalt that everyone needs to get out and vote, the voters of the Left are turning out and our people are staying at home.

Gafni/Goldknopf is crying gevalt saying he just got a report form Netanyahu that the situation isnt good and the Haredi voter areas have low turnout, and it will be very dangerous for the party.

Lapid is crying gevalt saying the race is tight and people need to get out and vote (for the parties in his bloc).

Chadash-Taal cried gevalt but I dont kow about what.

Mansour Abbas is crying gevalt because Chadash Taal took all their voters with their gevalt and now Raam might not get in.

Meretz has been crying gevalt for at least a week, but I havent heard anything new today yet.

All that gevalt and the news is reporting the highest voter turnout since 1999 at this point and time of the day.

Somebody out there is lying with their gevalt, and probably more than one.

Picture of the Day

In Netanya this morning a Meretz activist (possibly, this is under investigation and is claimed to have been posing as a Meretz activist) attacked a tefillin stand near a voting station and desecrated the tefillin somehow (I dont know what exactly he did with it). Other Meretz activists went and put no tefillin at the booth to protest that person's actions, and then it was followed up with Meretz activists around the country putting on tefillin to protest what that first person did. The person above said he would put on tefillin if the Chabadnik would put on a Meretz sticker, and they both did it.

Interesting Psak: not voting 3 times

Someone asked Rav Benzion Hacohen Kook, rav of a community in Petach Tikva and dayan in Jerusalem, an interesting question about voting, or not voting.

The questioner asked, considering that a repeated behavior, doing something three times, is considered in halacha a vow of sorts that would require hatarat nedarim, a release of a vow, if one wants to change the behavior, so if someone did not vote in 3 consecutive elections, is he allowed to vote at all or is he obligated by a "vow" to not vote? And can this vow be released?

Rav Kook responded that Rav Elyashiv was asked a similar question once and his response had been that it only gets the status of a vow for the positive behavior of a mitzva, not for behavior that is prohibited.

Rav Kook added that because the gedolim have paskened that voting is an obligation, so someone who did not vote has performed a sin and this definitely does not need hatarat nedarim. And when Rav Kook asked Rav Elyashiv if the psak remains the same even when they have their rabbonim to rely on who are opposed to voting so for them perhaps it is a mitzva to not vote, Rav Elyashiv responded that the Chazon Ish was a big enough rebbe for everybody, meaning the others are battul to the Chazon Ish's decision that voting is an obligation.

Troll of the Day

Today's troll of the day is not a statement made by somebody or a cute troll of a tweet but an actual election sign..

This election sign for the UTJ party quotes a passuk in the Torah saying "will your brothers go out to war and you sit here [at home]?", meaning, dont be complacent and choose not to vote while your brothers are out fighting for their lives. The irony and greatness of the troll is that this passuk is actually in context saying that all Jews have to go out battle, real war, for the nation, and it is the UTJ party adherents that do not go out to battle (mostly) but "sit here" and learn in yeshivas and kollels instead of sharing the burden of war that the Torah calls upon us to share.

Interesting Psak: Election supervisors dont need to daven mincha

Rav Moshe Harari, a posek and author, went to Rav Asher Weiss to ask a question confirming what someone else paskened. Someone in a yeshiva had paskened that anybody manning a voting station (to oversee proper order and voting and prevent voter fraud) and is station in a polling station in an Arab community is exemtp from his obligation to pray during that time because the Shulchan Aruch paskens that smeone busy with community affairs is exempt from his obligation to daven, so in the case of election day, someone manning such a booth would be exempt from davening mincha.

Rav Harari went to Rav Asher Weiss to ask his opinion on this matter.

Rav Weiss responded paskening that a person manning the booth is exempt from davening mincha. However, he added, if there is another Jew at the polling statino that is there to prevent fraud, then the first is not exempt and can rely on the other to prevent fraud while he davens. He himself is only exempt if he is the only Jew present.

Rav Weiss added that there is a consideration regarding people who man the booths both lshem shamayim and because they pay well, if perhaps the pay detracts from the mitzva aspect and then they would no longer be exempt form davening. Rav Weiss paskened that because they are going to dangerous places, even though they are getting paid it is clear the main purpose is the mitzva, so they are still exempt.

Dudu Fisher - COLORS (video)

More than eight months have passed since Russia first invaded Ukraine, decimating a once-thriving country and shattering lives. While the ongoing conflict no longer dominates headlines, the heartbreak continues for those who were forced to leave their homes with not much more than the clothes on their backs and, in a show of support, Broadway star Dudu Fisher and filmmaker Daniel Finkelman visited the Ukraine, assisting refugees on the Polish border and promising to share their story with the world. Featuring devastating footage of bombed out cars and the skeletal remains of buildings that were once homes, Colors depicts the depths of horror in Ukraine, reflected ten-fold in the eyes of those who remain. Haunting music and lyrics by Cecelia Margules bring the desolation and destruction to life, with Fisher’s emotional performance simultaneously offering hope for a future where Ukraine will once again be filled with beautiful, vibrant color. The decision to travel to the war-torn country was an easy one for Fisher, whose parents were saved from the Holocaust by Ukrainian citizens and Colors is dedicated in their honor. A SparksNext production directed by Daniel Finkelman and produced by Chaya Amor, Colors is a beacon of light in the darkness, a heartfelt prayer for a time when the grey pallor of war will give way to a brighter time, one where joy and justice will finally prevail. https://www.anatevka.com/

Quote of the Day

My father said to me his entire life 'remember the greatest miracle that ever happened to us is that the Jewish people have their own state'

-- Prime Minister Yair Lapid, starting off election day with a visit to his father's grave

The truth is, when I saw the picture of Lapid at his father's grave, my first thought was how amazing it is that the son of a Holocaust survivor is Prime Minister in our Jewish state, and what would all the victims and survivors think of where we are today. if they could only know or imagine...
