Troll of the Day

Today's troll of the day is not a statement made by somebody or a cute troll of a tweet but an actual election sign..

This election sign for the UTJ party quotes a passuk in the Torah saying "will your brothers go out to war and you sit here [at home]?", meaning, dont be complacent and choose not to vote while your brothers are out fighting for their lives. The irony and greatness of the troll is that this passuk is actually in context saying that all Jews have to go out battle, real war, for the nation, and it is the UTJ party adherents that do not go out to battle (mostly) but "sit here" and learn in yeshivas and kollels instead of sharing the burden of war that the Torah calls upon us to share.

  4. Nedarim 32a quoting this week's parasha:

אמר רבי אבהו אמר רבי אלעזר מפני מה נענש אברהם אבינו ונשתעבדו בניו למצרים מאתים ועשר שנים מפני שעשה אנגרייא בת"ח שנאמר (בראשית יד) וירק את חניכיו ילידי ביתו

Each group shares their own burden.

    1. Nice that people are free to apply exemptions from risking their lives to themselves because of their headgear.

  5. Nice that people are free to apply exemptions from dedicating their entire lifetimes to G-d because of their lack of headgear.

And anyways, the criteria is not headgear - it's dedication to Torah study.

    1. People who don't wear black hats can learn all day and not get exempt.

People with black hats can goof off all day and get exempt.

    2. I agree with you that that's wrong in theory. The army also needs to do a better job in catering to Haredim. Netzach Yehuda still needs fine-tuning or different programs need to open.

  6. I will note that I did not use this as an opportunity to comment on whether or not they are deserving of army exemptions, nor to comment on whether or not torah study is sharing the burden, or anything like that. Whatever you think about any of those issues, using this passuk is ironic, even if their avoiding army service is justified
