new President of Israel Yitzchak Herzog on Friday morning shopping for food, using a shopping list prepared (by his wife I guess)...

Dear, can you go to the store for me please? But honey, I am the President of Israel? Can't someone else go? Yitz, we are out of cucumbers. Go to the store, now! Ok, honey.

And when he gets home he still has to throw out the garbage!

the weirdest thing about this is that he doesnt get his list via whatsapp with a hundred changes and additions! He is so elite and disconnected from the people! :-)

this entire experice of the "change government" looks like it will give us a lot of chaos and interesting situations, but also a lot of fun talking and screaming from the Opposition...

MK Mansour Abbas (Raam) just signed a coalition agreement with MK Lapid, and also on the document stating Lapid has been able to form a government.

This is the first time in Israeli history an Arab party is actively participating in the formation of a government.

And if Lapid succeeds in getting the final signatures from Benentt and Saar within the next hour and a half or so, it seems like the first Israeli government including or at least supported by Arab parties will be formed. A lot can still happen, and today's final hours of negotiating and wrangling between the various parties dont portend an easy future for this government, but the moment it happens will be historic whatever happens after that.

As I said, I thought both candidates seemed worthy, and the office of the presidency is mostly a waste anyway, so while it would have been nice to have Miriam Peretz in the office, I don't see this as a loss or disappointment. With two worthy candidates, Israel will have been fine no matter who won.

Interestingly, all polls of the people of Israel showed a strong preference for Miriam Peretz to serve as the next President. She comes from the religious and right wing side of Israel, with so much of the population having connected with her personal story and holding a strong admiration of her faith and dedication to the State. Yet the Knesset vote voted strongly in favor of Yitzchak Herzog.

While the MKs like to say they are the vote of the people and express what the people want, the gap between what the people clearly wanted here and what the Knesset decided clearly shows that the Knesset is not a representative body - the people vote for Knesset and then the Knesset does what it wants, at most saying what we decide is what our people want.

Some interesting points:

The Likud, or the entire Right wing of Israeli politics, unusually did not field a candidate. Peretz ran as an independent candidate, and Herzog comes from the left having served in and even led the Labor party. That means at least most of the right wing MKs supported the left wing candidate for President.

That also means that the religious and Haredi MKs, at least mostly, supported the secular left wing Herzog over the religious right wing Peretz. In their defense, Herzog is known to be somewhat traditional, not completely secular, and he has a religious family background and he is well connected with the rabbinic and religious world even though he is not part of it himself. 

Party politics leads the way and it seems there is just no room for an independent, popular as he or she may be. Herzog has been, as any aspiring politician would have been, making deals for support for many years already, and Peretz had no way to catch up in such a short period of time (maybe not even if she had a lot of time).

May you serve Israel faithfully, and be a conduit for unity, cooperation, and peace among the various sectors of Israel.

Well, Rav Gamliel Rabinovitz, a noted mekubal from Jerusalem, says otherwise. he actually says not to blame the women.

According to Kikar, Rav Gamliel said that the fact that the fact that only men were killed and injured in the recent tragedies that hit the community, Meron and Karlin in Givat Zeev, shows that the reason behind the tragedy was our involvement in machloket, and women were not affected because they don't generally get involved in machloket.

Rav Gamliel also pointed to Corona and said women were hardly affected in Corona as well - mostly men suffered (is that true statistically? I have no idea).

We have to look at our actions and deeds, do soul searching, and see the machloket we get involved in, and they are all run by men. Women are hardly involved, if at all, and that is why they avoided these issues.

Rav Gamliel stressed that the tragedies were not because of that, but machloket causes fire to rage in the community.
