Yom Kippur in a bar

Some rabbi in Washington DC has an interesting interpretation of the name "Yom Kippur".

We all know the saying that Yom Kippur is a day similar to Purim (Ki-Purim). The explanations of that saying are varied, yet I never before heard one saying that Yom Kippur is like Purim in the sense that like Purim is  "topsy turvy" and upside down, so Yom Kippur should be as well, and therefore hold Yom Kippur services in a bar. I would assume he is also channeling the above average drinking on Purim and adding that atmosphere of the beer bar to Yom Kippur.

According to the Religion News Service, Rabbi Aaron Potok and Sarah Hurwitz will be doing just that - holding Yom Kippur services in a beer garden.

Criticism abounds and is obvious.

Weird.

  1. The one Shabbat I spent in Chicago, we davened in a shul in a building that used to be a pizza shop. The shul smelled like beer and oregano. Our hosts said that it made Yom Kippor interesting.

  2. Not to defend the program and I am also not defending Sarah Hurwitz, but it's not the Rabbah one. This one was Michelle Obama's speechwriter.

  3. 1) They want to get their "spirit"ual high
    2) Gives new meaning to High Holy Days
    3) They want to reenact the bringing of the Bar Yom Hakippurim (sorry)

    On a more serious note:
    1) This seems like טובל ושרץ בידו
    2) The idea of יום הכיפורים being like פורים is mentioned in the Zohar. This absurdity is definitely not Ribbi Shimon's intent or even close to it.
    3) ehwhy, I was there then a couple times and I remember that smell too.
