buying in bulk costs more

Behadrei is reporting on a strange argument up north. As you surely heard, the Satmar Rebbe recently came on a trip to Israel with an entourage of thousands of adherents. Whatever it is they are doing, they are planning to go to Meron for Shabbos and spend the Shabbos as one big group together.

To that end, they hired an agent to make all the arrangements to put on such a massive Shabbos event, including the renting of tzimmers, or AirBnBs, along with hostels in the area. In an attempt to keep the prices form skyrocketing, they kept quiet that it is a massive group shabbos of Satmar. I guess they simply looked for and rented lots of individual places as if the renters were renting on a small basis. Also, the agent was supposed to somehow prevent any other groups from coming to Meron this Shabbos so as to avoid a situation in whch there would be other people inappropriate for their atmosphere ruining their Shabbos.

At some point one of the larger hostel owners in the area somehow picked up on what was happening and got upset he had been hoodwinked - had he known a bg group was coming he would have charged more! The fellow went to Beis Din and sued to cancel the arrangements claiming "mekach taus" - a mistaken deal. He wants to get the deal canceled and renegotiate the rentals at higher prices.

Satmar responded to beis din saying that's exactly why they did not say it is a big Satmar group - to avoid the prices being increased.

I am curious how this will turn out. It sounds like an interesting case. The guy renting out his hostel already knws it is a big group, though he didn't know how big. Still, what's that his business? He rents rooms out, why should he make more just because it is a big group. Maybe he should be giving a discount because they are renting in bulk rather than just a few individual rooms!

I guess we have to wait patiently for publication of the decision!

Quote of the Day

it will be discussed, there will be opinions, we will come to understandings. Tzfat and Metula havent been closed, but Meron will be? Ok, we heard. The entire world waits for Meron.

-- Minister Yitzchak Goldknopf, responding to the news that Meron will be closed and declared a closed military zone for the week leading up to Lag BaOmer and for Lag BaOmer itself, to prevent people form going there against instructions.
Meron has been hit with rockets from Hezbollah several times (there is an important army base very close to Meron) and a party with a large amount of celebrants on Lag BaOmer could make this an easy target for Hezbollah and will be a potential disaster. Goldknopf obviously doesnt like the idea of Meron being closed on Lag BaOmer.
What he said caused quite a stir, especially because Metulla is closed down. Goldknopf has since apologized, but specifically apologized for inaccurately bundling Tzfat and Meron together. It seems he still thinks the Meron celebration shouldnt be shut down, despite the war and danger, just he shouldnt have compared it to Metulla...

State insurance for Meron

Interestingly, no insurance company is willing to insure the upcoming Meron celebrations on Lag B'Omer. The people putting the event together are obviously throwing a fit about this. You can read all the relevant comments at Kikar from the various politicians and administrators involved...

To that end, without insurance, with the event just two or so weeks away, they are saying that unless the State insures the event with a solution presented next week they will put a halt to all preparations and abandon the event.

I am not sure who they think they are threatening. Does "the State" care if they do or do not put on a Lag B'Omer event?

Regardless of that, how does this work? If insurance companies will not insure an event, does the State have the ability to somehow? The State is not an insurance company. Under what authority or via what office using what methods and protocols can the State provide insurance to an event? How does this work? is this something normally done? They insist the State take responsibility but isnt that what happened last time even though it was not under the guise of insurance - the State paid families after the tragedy. What is this crisis really about?

Checkmate or Petty

The Meron tragedy happened on Lag B'Omer of the year 2021.

Naftali Bennett served as Minister of Religious Affairs in the years 2013-2015 with Benjamin Netanyahu as Prime Minister.

PM Netanyahu, in his role as Prime Minister in 2021 at the time of the tragedy was investigated and was even warned by the committee of possible future ramifications. Bennett was not part of the investigation, seemingly because he had no connection to it. Netanyahu, Deri, Amir Ohana, police commanders and others were investigated, and some warned, due to their involvement. Netanyahu, having been warned, seems to have the right by law to request other people be called as witnesses and to be questioned and investigated.

PM Netanyahu has requested the committee call and investigate Naftali Bennet in the capacity of his previous position as Minister of Religious Affairs.

Again, Bennett held that role in a Netanyahu government in the years 2013-2015, well before the Meron tragedy.

I dont know what they will find, and why Bennett would be any differently responsible from any other Minister of Religious Affairs from others years, but I guess we wont know without looking. Considering the distance it does seem vindictive of Netanyahu to do this to Bennett, because of their bad relations and maybe because Bennett as PM formulated and empowered this committee to investigate the tragedy.

I would say Netanyahu is saying "Checkmate" to Bennett by doing this, but that would only be the case if Bennett is found somehow to have some responsibility and guilt> if he will be, then Checkmate. If not, Netanyahu looks really petty.

the great white hope

Whoa. The news is reporting that Minister Meir Porush just resigned from his position as minister responsible for the Meron celebration on Lag B'Omer.

It seems Porush got fed up with appointments being forced on him and both the Likud and Shas have been mixing their hands into his pot. Porush has had enough and cannot take responsibility for Meron under these conditions.

According to news reports, Porush is considering full resignation form the government, being that responsibility for Meron was the main reason he took the ministerial position in the first place.

That would make it two days in a row of resignations from the government (unless Porush waits until tomorrow)

I dont think this is a sign that the government is at risk. Not at this point. Both Maoz and Porush will still support the government from the Knesset, and Porush is still beholden as part of UTJ (as much/little as Porush is ever beholden to anything), so while it is not actual dissent and doesnt make Netanyahu's government shaky the way Idit Silman's resignation made Bennett's government unstable, it is a sign of general problems in the coalition.

But more than concern about the government, I am concerned about the upcoming Lag B'Omer celebrations in Meron. Lag B'Omer is less than 3 months away. Porush was the great white hope for getting the Meron celebrations back on track in a way that would be both safe and celebratory. Can anyone else take over at this point and make a successful event? Possibly but there is not much time left.

Minister of Meron

According to the Jerusalem Post report, Meir Porush has requested, as part of coalition negotiations, sole responsibility for Meron and the Lag B'Omer events, along with responsibility for implementing whatever necessary as per the decisions of the investigative committee into the Meron tragedy in which 45 people were killed in a stampede.

Porush has always dealt with Meron more directly than any of the others, so it is not surprising that he wants to be involved in this way. Last year when Matan Kahane organized the Lag B'Omer events, Porush broke the ban on talking to members of the government at the time and went to Meron to coordinate with Kahane on different issues and to help so the event would run smoothly and as much to his satisfaction as possible.

Interestingly, people are now calling Porush the Minister of Meron (assumign he will be granted this role he is requesting). He has also already reportedly been given the role of Minister of Jerusalem in the incoming government, if agreements are to be signed. Add to that other oles given to other people such as Minister of the South and the Galillee, along with Minister of the Periphery, and I wonder if we will soon have a minister for every city and region, just to create enough government positions to satisfy every MK. We'll have a Minister of Bet Shemesh, a Minister of Tel Aviv, a Minister of the North, a Minister of Judea and Samaria, a Minister of Eilat, a Minister of Haifa, you get the point.

If anyone can do a good job up in Meron that would keep the main people who run it happy, and maybe even do it responsibly at the same time, it is Meir Porush. We'll see what happens.

it is always election season in Israel

I am really not sure what to think about the latest developments in the inquiry into the Meron tragedy. Yesterday they sent warning letters to several people involved. Aryeh Deri so far hasn't been warned of an impending indictment and seems to have convinced them he was not responsible, but Netanyahu as Prime Minister for 12 consecutive years with overall responsibility and awareness of the dangerous situation was warned, as was Amir Ohana the Minister of Internal Security at the time, along with several police officials and other central figures. Maybe more will be coming to other people, maybe not.

The Likud has attacked this decision to send these letters now, claiming it is a political ploy, as the letter is sent during an election season - another way of hurting Netanyahu and trying to weaken him before elections.

The committee until now has been praised all around as being serious, not political, and fair and determined to reveal the truth. Just because some people dont like the interim conclusions does not mean all that has to now no longer be true.

And the thing is, at least in the past 3 years, but even before that as well though not as in extreme a manner, in Israel we are always right before an election. Nothing would ever get accomplished, as little as gets accomplished as is, if they always had to worry about the ramifications and effect on an upcoming election!

Similar to the way Hamas ends military campaigns with a cease fie to give themselves time to prepare for the next one, Israel concludes an election season just to give itself a bit of time to prepare for the next one.

Lag B'Omer wasnt the type of party some want

Baruch Hashem, and thanks to the State putting some actual organizational preparation efforts into the event, all reports indicate that the Lag B'Omer celebrations in Meron have passed quietly and everything went according to plan and was in order. And hopefully it will continue to remain quiet and uneventful for the remainder of Lag B'Omer. Pretty impressive for Jewish and Israeli planning, known for cutting corners and thinking "yhiyeh bseder" - everything will be ok.

I did see a lot of online complaining from both Haredi news media sites and on social media saying the State took it over and ruined the celebrations, causing few people to go, leaving the Mt Meron largely empty with a weak celebration of little or no music and no food, limiting how much time people could be there, etc. They were mostly complaining that instead of a celebration it is mostly a depressing event.

I think it was clear to most people that far fewer people would go this year. Not because they are afraid. I think most people are not afraid, especially with a lot of the irresponsible things being stopped. But because there is just a bit of a damper on it. The tragedy of last year with 45 celebrants being killed in the crowds and collapse along with many more injured, just put a damper on the whole thing. several hassidic groups told their people to not go.

The police did not tell anyone not to go. They made thousands of tickets available to the public. Anyone who wanted to go was able to. Even if it was not perfect, and even if the police gave groups of tickets and priority to some hassidic groups over other people (as some reports have claimed), there was still plenty to go around. Anyone who wanted to go was able to. Anyone who wanted to daven by Kever Rashbi was able to. Anyone who wanted to participate in honoring Rashbi was able to. And anyone who did not want to chose not despite being able to.

It isnt a failure just because the event did not draw 500,000 people. The event was not a failure just because it was not a mad crush with a chaotic celebration, with every group making its own bonfire and tish, with the tens of thousands of people crushing together like sardines. It was not a failure just because there was not a crazy trance concert with free food being given out.

We know that this year's celebration was not like last years or the years before. It was planned to not be, so just because it wasnt the type of party some want doesnt make it a failure. Some people just like to complain no matter what.

Kahane in Meron

Matan Kahane (I am not sure what his title is right now - MK? Minister? Deputy Minister?), responsible for overseeing the Meron festivities, just issued a statement in meron, sitting with the police, talking about their responsibilities in preventing people from ruining the festivities while ensuring the safety of the celebrants....

the thing is, I thought they banned food and drink from being served up there... :-)

pay for protest Meron price list

this sign is crazy...

Not exactly "pay for slay" but not that far off....

The sign is really a posting of a price list of sorts for fighting with the police in Meorn on Lag B'Omer.

Whoever is behind this says that they have achieved funding for people who will be harmed by the police, according to the following price list:
If you get arrested, up to 1 day: $200
if you get hit by the police (better with it being documented): $100
if you get a fine: double whatever the fine is

Qualified participants should leave a message on the various system lines (I guess the relevant people know them, as they aren't included in the sign)

Accompanying the lower picture of a police bus to hold detainees, they write that even 50 of these won't be enough.

Looks like it will be leibedige on Lag B'Omer, though I really think their bark is worse than their bite... there probably wont be too many of these whackos...

It isnt a bad price list for people who dont have any other regular income... I do wonder if they get $100 for every time a policeman hits them, for each klop on the head, or is it $100 overall for being hit but not for each punch or slap?

I wonder how much money they were able to raise for this incentive program - they could not even afford to print a real sign but printed it on a home printer using A4 paper....

Badatz wants to make Meron interesting

The Badatz Eida Hachareidis does not like the new arrangements at Meron for the upcoming Lag B'Omer celebrations.

They accuse the government of trying to take over Meron and take the treasures of Meron and the area for itself, and to that end have destroyed shuls and batei medrash and the tzniyus roads and paths (which the government built in previous years in the first place)...

The Badatz calls on its adherents to not follow the rules of the government and to go to Meron without cooperating and without needing any favors or goodwill from those evil people.

I am not sure what they are expecting to happen - are they buying tickets to get in and just dont plan to follow the rules once there? Are they going to go without buying tickets and plan to fight their way in? Are they just talk and bluster and really will play along very nicely? Very often their public fights get a lot of public Haredi support from young hotheads. The issue of Meron is unique. Because of what happened last year I am not sure people form the general Haredi community are going to support them in this approach.

The last thing we need in Meron right now is to see the Edia zealots going to Meron and fighting their way in, attacking policemen and policemen attacking them to keep them out, or even getting in and then messing up the logistics in place...

scalping Meron

Arrests have been made of two young Haredi men suspected of forging tickets to Meron for Lag B'Omer.

In light of last year's tragedy at Meron in which 45 people were killed on Lag B'Omer, among the changes for this year's festivities, entry will only be permitted to those carrying tickets. Tickets are meant to stagger the numbers of participants so there won't be too many at any one given time, with entry permitted for up to 4 hours. When purchasing a ticket, the ticket will be for a specific time.

I guess it was bound to happen. With tickets limited, whether by number or by time, someone was going to forge them. I assume there will also be scalping at some point, if there isn't already. Some people probably bought large amounts of tickets, ostensibly for groups, and will resell them at a higher price.

Interestingly, one of the men arrested, a 19 year old Haredi from Jerusalem, is being defended by a lawyer who has claimed that he did not do it. His argument is that this young man has no knowledge of computers and only holds a kosher phone, so there is no way he could have done this. The phones confiscated during the arrest have no connection to the Internet and with his lack of knowledge in how to use a computer, it is an unreasonable suspicion to think that this young man is unreasonable for the forgery.
source: Behadrei

I dont know that any of this need necessarily be an impediment to forging documents and selling them (his partner could have done that part of it while he handled other aspects of the plan), but I obviously dont know that he did. The police will have to make their case.

another Meron structure dismantled

According to the news, another structure in the Kever Rashbi complex in Meron has been dismantled last night as per a recent court order.

I have lost count but this is the most recent in a  series of structures in the complex to have been ordered destroyed.

It is amazing to consider the chaos and anarchy that was going on in Kever Rashbi complex, no rules, no order, no law. I dont know who "they" is, but they basically just did whatever they wanted. Everyone already said this when the Meron Tragedy happened but it really is a miracle no disaster had happened there previously, considering the lack of order and safety compliance.

Quote of the Day

Today we will approve a compensation package of half a million shekels for each family that lost a loved one in the Meron tragedy. This is a very serious humanitarian situation, and the government of Israel is offering a hand. The State should take responsibility, even before the conclusions of the investigative committee, which can still take a lot of time... this year the celebration in Meron will look different. We will allow it to take place in a safe manner. Whoever goes to Meron - does not need to endanger his life. I rely on the Minister of Religious Affairs and on the rest of the ministers involved in this. The compensation will not bring back the 45 people who died there but at least it will help the families get through such a difficult period.

Quote of the Day

The government of Israel has given me the responsibility for the Lag BaOmer celebrations in Meron this year. The events in Meron this coming year will be very different than the events that have been until now - the security and safety of the celebrants will be above everything else this time.

-- Minister of Religious Affairs Matan Kahane

this cannot be satisfying to the people who have called Kahane names like "Antiochus" due to the various reforms he has been proposing..

Meron to close, maybe

The "Vaadat Chachamisha", the Committee of Five, that runs the complex of Kever Rashbi in Meron recently announced that as of this Thursday the complex will be shut down. They are having a problem finding insurance to cover the site, ever since the tragedy this past lag B'Omer in which 45 pilgrims died. Without insurance on the site, they are not willing to keep it open to visitors with the risk falling all on them. If, God forbid, something should happen and some would get hurt there, they could be sued without insurance.

I dont know why this Thursday and not until now, but I would guess that this Thursday the current policy expires and no insurance company will renew or take it on.

We recently went up to visit the site in Meron, so if it shuts down, at least I know we got in before the bell.

Since they made the announcement, Hamechadesh is reporting that a group of "gvirim" from Satmar have met to discuss this situation and have decided to approach American based insurance companies to look for coverage. They are offering insurance companies to be guarantors on the coverage should anything happen. The Vaadat Hachamisha is open to considering this, should a formal offer of a policy be made. Additionally, this gives them, somehow, a point of pressure to hold on the government and on local insurance companies to maybe get a local offer.

I am not sure why this adds pressure. If I were a local insurance company refusing to give a policy I would be happy that someone else took responsibility for it. Additionally, in today's day and age I dont see why it should matter where the insurance company is based. Anyways the Israeli companies are probably really just agents of sorts for global insurance companies providing the actual coverage. Either way, it is good they might be able to find a policy.

That being said, this type of arrangement sounds like a scam. I wonder if any real insurance company will fall for it, or if they will at least get maximum legal protection. Anyone who slips down the stairs or trips and hurts himself and decides to sue will get paid by these Satmar chassidim? I cannot believe any real insurance company would work on such an arrangement with coverage being guaranteed privately. Perhaps this would work better if these gvirim would set up their own insurance company and provide the coverage directly.

Quote of the Day

If the Admors play for an hour or more with the cotton, it draws the whole thing out, the young people stand around and watch, it becomes interesting. If they come out and light the match, the whole thing takes a minute or two, so how many people will stop and watch? 500? But if it takes an hour, 5000 people gather. It was never before like this in Meron. There was the holy bonfire lighting, but what are all these performances? What are these platforms filled with "achamim" (ie important people form the community)? this should not be allowed to happen, as every year we nearly have a tragedy. All the lightings should be cancelled except for the traditional one on the roof of the structure, and it should not take more than 2 minutes. The Admor can stay in hsi room in hitbodedut for an hour and talk to the angels, I don't care all is good. But wen he comes out, he comes out with the stick and fire and it takes two minutes and it is over. With a stopwatch in hand.

-- Rav Avraham Freuilich, one of the Committee of Five members, testifying before the investigative committee for the Meron tragedy

Freulich said some harsh things about what goes on there, but dont mistake what he said for thinking he is of the opinion there should be major changes. he wants to retain control as is held today but the State should just give more support. he does not even want the money, or the lions share of it, from the State, but wants it to come form private donations so that the state cannot tell him what to do

defacing the Meron victims memorial

this is insane.. extremists vandalized the memorial wall in Meron, tearing down and defacing the posters of the images of the 45 victims of the Leg B'Omer tragedy.

I am not quite sure what they are being extremists about and what they don't like about this. There are not even any pictures of women included (because there were no female victims)!

I am not sure what their problem is and what this is all about, but I hope the authorities figure out who they are and put an end to this type of behavior

Quote of the Day

The government is not interested in what happened in Meron. Their objective is to embarrass the Haredi MKs, the former Prime Minister, and the families, instead of helping them financially. The government just wants blood and for heads to roll.

  - - MK Keti Shitreet (Likud)

I'm not sure how creating an investigative committee into Israel's worst civilian tragedy is just revenge and looking for blood, but ok. If their opinion is worth anything, the families have been demanding such an investigation.

Whether the state should pay the families some sort of financial stipend, I don't know though I'm not opposed to it. I do not know why the two are mutually exclusive - they can set up an investigation and also pass the decision to grant a stipend of some sort. The previous government did neither.

Setting up an investigative committee is also not looking to embarrass anyone but to get to the bottom of what happened and where the failures were, and yes, who was responsible, if anyone. Should we never investigate anything because it might find someone responsible? Should we not investigate just because someone from the previous government might bear responsibility (maybe, nobody knows if that is the case)? Did only Netanyahu's government have the legitimacy to investigate this?

Rav Gamliel says not to blame the women!

After the Meron tragedy we heard a lot of pontificating of what we must repair as part of our communal soul searching... Some of the more vocal opinions have been, as is common, the women and tzniyus, even specifically "lace top sheitels".

Well, Rav Gamliel Rabinovitz, a noted mekubal from Jerusalem, says otherwise. he actually says not to blame the women.

According to Kikar, Rav Gamliel said that the fact that the fact that only men were killed and injured in the recent tragedies that hit the community, Meron and Karlin in Givat Zeev, shows that the reason behind the tragedy was our involvement in machloket, and women were not affected because they don't generally get involved in machloket.

Rav Gamliel also pointed to Corona and said women were hardly affected in Corona as well - mostly men suffered (is that true statistically? I have no idea).

We have to look at our actions and deeds, do soul searching, and see the machloket we get involved in, and they are all run by men. Women are hardly involved, if at all, and that is why they avoided these issues.

Rav Gamliel stressed that the tragedies were not because of that, but machloket causes fire to rage in the community.
