divers to search for remains of Holocaust victims in the Danube River

As reported by TOI, Minister of Interior Aryeh Deri has been in talks with the Hungarian Interior Minister, Sandor Pinter, and has now obtained agreement and permission to have Israeli divers and rescue teams search for the remains of Jewish victims of the Holocaust who were shot and thrown into the Danube River. The Hungarians will also provide assistance, as needed. Any remains found will be brought to Israel for burial.

It is hard to believe that after so many years the remains might still be there and be retrievable, but in recent years some remains have been found with forensics indicating that at least some of them belong to Asheknazi Jews from the time of the war.

The “Shoes on the Danube Bank” memorial, pictured to the left, consists of 60 pairs of period shoes made out of iron to commemorate the Jews who were brought to the spot by members of the Arrow Cross. They were ordered to remove their shoes and then were shot so that their bodies fell into the river.

Respect to Aryeh Deri for working on this and hopefully some Jewish souls will be able to find peace as their bodies are brought to proper Jewish burial..
