It was recently reported that Rav Yitzchak Zilbershtein, rav of Ramat Elchonon neighborhood of Bnei Braq, had paskened that people should not make large Chanuka parties, inviting the extended family and friends, but people can make their own small parties for the immediate family each in their own home.

One of his students just asked him to confirm if he issued such a psak. Rav Zilbershtein confirmed and explained. He said that throwing a big party now can create a chilul hashem. While Jews are being slaughtered in Gaza that frum people are throwing parties and dancing and rejoicing. People will get upset seeing such images. Rav Zilbershtein said similar psak was given during other previous wars in Israel as well by rabbonim of previous generations.

When asked what people can do to commemorate the joy of the holiday Rav Zilbershtein said there are no explicit rules but each person should use his seichel and judgement to consider himself how to celebrate the holiday without turning it into a chilul hashem
