why a ruling?

The Supreme Court just ruled the firing of Ronen Bar, head of the Shabak, was not according to proper procedure and was also unlawful due to conflict of interest.

I am not sure why the Supreme court ruled anything at all. Ronen Bar announced his plans to resign in June. In light of Bar's resignation, the government retracted its firing of Ronen Bar. If the government retracted the firing of Ronen Bar, there is retroactively no court petition to rule on.

So why is the Supreme Court ruling anything on this at all today?

Here's the problem. Israel is one step away from becoming the same as Iran.
In Iran, there is a democratically elected government whose decisions are subject to approval by the supreme council of ayatollahs to make sure they align with Islam.
In Israel, there is a democratically elected government whose decision are subject to approval by the Supreme Court to make sure they align with secular socialist views.
The Supreme Court made this ruling to show the government that it's the actual institution running the country and remind the Knesset that it can only make decisions it approved of.
The final step to make Israel like Iran (and I'm sure they're trying to figure a way to implement it) is that in Iran, candidates, especially leadership ones, have to be approved by the ayatollahs. Don't think the Supreme Court won't try to figure out a way to limit who can run for a seat in Israel to make sure only the right "enlightened citizens" can get in.

  2. Why? To rub the government's face in it. There isn't a single court anywhere else in the world that would rule on a case with zero practical purpose. Goldfreund *loves* rubbing the government's face in it, stirring up the protesters, etc. You especially know this when he accuses Bibi of a conflict of interest when everyone *knows* what he himself has done. It's power.
