I dont want to say this is reminiscent of the British during the Mandate period, but it sort of is.

Something strange is going on with former MK Yehuda Glick.

Yesterday Glick was detained/arrested on Har Habayit. Glick goes regularly to the Har, and is no stranger to what happens there or to what rules the police set for ascension. Glick says he was arrested for "walking too slow". The police later said that Glick was arrested for "breaking the rules of the place" and causing a provocation, though they did not specify what rules he broke. After some hours of being detained and interrogated, Glick was eventually released.

While it might be unusual to arrest someone as high profile as Yehuda Glick, it is not unusual for people to be arrested for minor violations on Har Habayit. And it is even understandable, as the most minor of infractions can still be used as a justification by the Arabs to start a riot or intifada, as has been done in the past, so the police feel they need to come down strongly on even minor infractions. So just Glick being detained would not be much of a story (though for "walking too slow" is admittedly curious), but what happened next is strange.

In the middle of the night, around midnight, the police went to Glick's house, with a warrant and an arrest order in hand. After an hour searching, plus searching his car above that, for God knows what, the police arrested Glick and took him down to the station.

And then again this morning, after two arrests and interrogations and searches, Glick was taken in again for another interrogation.

The police later said they were looking for items (papers) from the investigation that went missing. They suspect that Glick took the papers from the interrogation room on his way out earlier in the day. It should be noted that the police found nothing in their searches of his house and car. Glick denies taking any papers.

A number of ministers have criticized the police for this behavior. Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan said, after praising Glick and reminding the public that he worked with Glick to increase the number of Jews ascending to Har Habayit and lessening harsh rules of the police, that he would look into the matter, but he has no involvement in arrests and the police had a warrant for a judge, but after this story is completed he will look into the matter , will look into the cause for arrest and the interrogation and house search and check to see if it was justified.

I suspect there is more to this story than we are being told. As it is, this is too strange to be just what we are seeing in the news.

Strangely enough, yesterday MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) invited a fellow to the Knesset that has aroused curiosity, to put it mildly.

The person Glick invited and hosted was Yaron Attias. Attias has the official status of a gett refuser. The beis din in Haifa has recently declared him as such for refusing to give his wife a gett and has also implored the public to impose social and halachic sanctions on him, specifically to avoid him socially, to not let him into shul or give him aliyah to the torah and the like.

Why Glick invited him to the Knesset nobody knows. Many have asked why yet Glick has, so far, refused to explain.

Glick has always danced to his own beat and played to his own tunes. He has always been a bit unique and different. I hope he had a really good reason to invite Attias. I hope he was trying to persuade him to give the gett to his wife. I hope he thought he would have some influence on the situation and he brought Attias to the Knesset in order to facilitate that, but I don't know.

I dont know why else Glick would bring him to the Knesset and what he might otherwise gain from it, so I am willing to wait for an explanation, giving him the benefit of the doubt in the meantime. Glick is normally unique in a good way, taking positions that seem to be right, even if against popular opinion. It does say that one shoudl take care to be clean from public suspicion, so I hope he explains soon and does not remain suspect of going against the beis din orders and supporting a gett refuser.

A report came out complaining about an IDF ceremony in which at the end of the ceremony the religious soldiers sang the song "Ani Maamin" (after the Hatikva anthem had been concluded). The report suggests some sort of religious coercion in the IDF while pointing to this singing of Ani Maamin as proof.

Glick first responded to the report saying that there was no religious coercion. After Hatikva was finished the ceremony was over and the soldiers sang whatever else they wanted to sing. Anyone who does not want to sing along does not have to, but are soldiers not allowed to sing their preferred songs on their own time?

Some responded, including Danny Dayan, that this cant be done at the end of official ceremonies and it isnt just some soldiers singing their own song but is a denigration to the national anthem and has become common in recent years to sing this after Hatikva.

To that Glick responded...

Glick says " I don't get excited about this song, I don't connect to its words.. I don't connect to this custom of singing it after Hatikva. but still whoever wants to sing it, can sing it., what's the problem?"

Glick is under fire for saying he does not connect to the words of this song. The words of the song are the words of one of the 13 main principles of faith, that being belief in the coming of mashiach.

Glick has yet to respond.

I have more than a few problems with the Kotel.. we invented the Kotel 50 years ago and turned it into the holiest place for the Jewish people and chased Arab families away from there. Since then, the Jewish people gave up the place that was the holiest until 50 years ago - Har Habayit.

The Knesset is set to vote today on the "minimarket law" that would give the Minister of Interior the right to reject a municipal law, including a law passed to allow businesses to open no Shabbos.

The coalition is running into a problem. MK Yehuda Glick's wife passed away this morning and Glick, obviously, will not be able to participate in the vote. The coalition has been having trouble garnering enough support for this bill and if it passes it will be by the skin of its teeth. Losing an MK that would vote for this bill, hurts the chances of it passing. And, this is in addition to MK David Azulai from Shas who is still hospitalized.

Normally there is an unofficial arrangement in the Knesset by which when MKs from either side are unable to attend a vote, an MK from the other side will offset that and not participate as well. In this vote today, the coalition MKs are refusing to agree to offset the ranks for Glick (and Azulai).

I would note that a couple of weeks ago when the minimarket law came up for ts initial reading, opposition MKs also refused to offset the vote for Azulai who had just been hospitalized. At the last moment Meretz chairman Ilan Gilon showed compassion and said that being moral and human is more important than taking advantage of the moment and agreed to offset Azulai's vote.

Notwithstanding my following question, being that such an arrangement does exist and is almost always followed, it is immoral for them to refuse to offset the vote and take advantage like this of the passing of Yaffa Glick. This is not even as important a vote as they are making it out to be because we all know it will pass and legal counsel in the government has said it will be applied retroactively as well.

In normal situations, not including today's vote, I would mention that I never really understood the concept of offsetting the vote for missing MKs. Why is it the moral obligation of the opposition MKs to help a coalition law, that they oppose, to pass? If the coalition doesn't have the necessary votes, for whatever reason, they can delay the vote until they get the numbers. Why does it fall on the opposition's shoulders? They normally both gain from the arrangement as neither side needs to be overly pressured to make sure they have full attendance - but to turn that into some moral obligation that has to be followed? I don't get that..

At the beginning of the 20th century, the rabbonim paskened in Poland not to cooperate with the Zionists. during the Holocaust rabbonim said to stay in Germany and not run away, and they made a mistake. With Har Habayit as well they are mistaken....100 years ago Rav Kook paskened it is prohibited for women to vote in elections.. Baruch Hashem the world has changed, though the rabbonim naturally get pulled along by the people but do not lead revolutions....

According to the numbers published by the police (thank Eli Duker for pointing me to them):
From 2011-2013 Har Habayit was closed on Tisha B'Av
2014- 80 Jews (HH was closed in the afternoon)
2015- around 300
2016 - 400 
2017- 1263

this was very likely the most Jews on Har Habayit in one day since the destruction of the Second Temple nearly 2000 years ago

Kipa posted this selfie of MKs Tzipi Hotovely and Yehuda Glick in tefillin in the Knesset chambers. Kipa claims this is the first time someone was wearing tefillin in the Knesset chambers. I did a quick search to check that and all I could come up with was an article from last year about a night long filibuster in which MK Yisroel Eichler brought his tefillin to the Knesset, though he was not wearing them. Glick out his tefillin on this morning to daven after a night long filibuster session debating and voting on the new broadcasting authority. Hotovely decided to document the scene with a selfie...

MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) has proposed his first law proposal.

Glick wants to obligate all food establishments (restaurants and the like), schools, and day care centers to keep a dose of Epinephrine on the premises at all times.  Having it nearby and ready will prevent death in cases of allergic reactions to food served.

The proposal passed through the Ministerial Legislative Committee, and will head to the Knesset for further voting.
