According to Behadrei, MK Yasmin Fridman (Yesh Atid), and joined on by members of the coalition across the various parties, has proposed a law that would prohibit the import of live animals into Israel for the purpose of slaughter - for meat. the law, if it would pass, will actually limit the imports, after approval by a minister, decreasing by 25% each year.

Much of the meat in Israel is actually from animals that were imported alive. They are brought to Israel, kept for a while and fattened up, and then slaughtered. A lot of these animals are brought in from South America and form various European countries. The purpose of this law is to put an end to the painful journey of these animals brought in from Israel just to be slaughtered.

While this law proposal would seemingly cause the price of meat to go up, at the same time, according to Behadrei, the coalition is also working on law proposals that would make the price of meat cheaper by increasing the import of meat and also by encouraging the increase of cattle raised in Israel.

As I said above, the initiative is for the purpose of lessening the tzaar baalei chaim of these animals, which is a good thing, but perhaps this is something that should be delayed a bit until the prices and cost of living stabilize a bit. Right now, according to the news, as I write this, PM Naftali Bennett and Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman are meeting for Finance Ministry officials to put together a plan to reverse the increasing rise in prices right now. Delaying such moves that would directly cause prices to rise might be a start.

This was done to be more sensitive to gay couples where there is not a classic mother and father - there might be two fathers and two mothers or some other combination of parents who identify in other ways.

While "parent 1" and "parent 2" are kind of general and pareve and dont imply anything on its own, the Haredi community was incensed over this change and its tacit support for homosexual lifestyles, even though it was not MDA's choice but one imposed on it by the government.

There used to be many blood drives for MDA among various yeshivot and they would raise a  lot of liters of blood through the Haredi donors, but that has since dried up, largely but not completely, because of the new MDA forms. MDA is even complaining now of a serious shortage of blood in the blood banks.

Interestingly, while MDA has refused to go back to the original forms, as demanded by the Haredi community, that state mother's name and father's name explicitly, they have removed that section entirely and no longer ask for information about the parents. Some say this was an attempt to solve the problem - they wont ask for mother and father as government does not allow it but they also wont ask for the parent 1 and parent 2 that is so upsetting to some. Seems like a good compromise to me. Others say they stopped a little while ago because the information is not really necessary any longer anyway based on demographics. The first reason makes more sense to me to be the cause, considering the timing, but whatever.

Regardless of why they got rid of parent 1 and parent 2, it was not good enough to resolve the issue and calm the Haredi ire, and bring back the blood donors from that community. Despite the offending terms not being on the current forms, the Haredi community, via its leadership, is demanding that MDA bring back the original forms that asked for the names of father and mother. For now MDA is refusing but they are facing a serious shortage of blood and may have to capitulate (assuming they are legally able to).

To me it seems like getting rid of those questions entirely should have been a fair resolution, but it seems the Haredi community wants to make a point.

MK Yaakov Asher (UTJ) attacked Kariv (verbally) and said, among other things, "let's see if you have the courage to go with this group of provocative women up to Har Habayit and disturb there with your prayers.

While MK Yaakov Asher is not wrong - the women, and Kariv, fight for equal prayer rights at the Kotel despite it being probvocative and against what most of the people there want, yet they would not dare take the same stand on Har Habayit and support, and fight for, Jewish prayer there as it would upset the Muslims, I find it ironic and humorous to hear Asher encourage people to go to Har Habayit and pray when he is against that too.

I find this funny - funny that this is a big issue important enough for an important rabbi's attention.

A class of 8th grade students went to pay a visit to Rav Shimon Baadani, to talk with him and get his blesing.

During their meeting, Rav Baadani commented on the phenomenon of yeshiva bochurim going out to eat cholent on Thursday nights. Rav Baadani thinks this is a bad thing and it pains him to hear about this. Rav Baadani explained that this time should be used to learn Torah. Thursday nights was always dedicated to learning Torah, reviewing and learning late into the night. Back int he day Rav Shach woud make sure the talmidim had what to eat Thursday nights late while learning, in addition to making sure there was milk for the coffee so they would learn better - but to eat cholent late into the night and burn the night away is painful.

He might be technically right. Doing anything at any time other than learning Torah is bittul torah. 

But.

But, kids need an outlet or to get a break every now and then. Eating cholent is better than sitting around and smoking weed and getting drunk or doing drugs. Waste of time? maybe but kids need to waste some time sometimes. Eating cholent doesnt need to be an all night event - maybe encourage them to spend an hour or two out with the guys eating cholent and shmoozing and then getting back to the beis medrash for a night of learning. Maybe encourage the yeshiva to serve cholent Thursday nights so the boys wont have to go elsewhere but can take a break, which will almost definitely naturally be shorter, in the yeshiva and shmooze a bit and then get back to learning.

And some would say OK, Boomer to this. Back in the day we spent Thursday nights drinking coffee and were extra happy if we got milk, and these kids today need cholent????

Aren't there worse things to oppose than cholent?
