Eli Cohen Ate Matza In Syria
Nadia Cohen, the widow of the late Israeli and Jewish hero Eli Cohen (Our Man in Damascus) who was a spy in the Syrian government eventually captured and hanged, related the other day that her husband, Eli, was always careful to make sure he ate matza on Pesach - even when he was deeply embedded as a spy in Syria.
Doing so could have put the mission, and himself, in great danger. She recently found out from two Syrians that Eli would he would go to the market where he knew Jews were during the holiday. He would then approach a Jew and request to taste some of the matza. Working to keep his identity secret, he would pose the request as a cultural interest asking to taste the food the Jews eat during the holiday. (source: INN)
It is amazing how Jews, throughout history, would risk everything to commemorate the memory of leaving Egypt, to celebrate Passover as much as possible...

Reminds me of a story from my grandparents. During the war they traveled all across Europe on foot and finally hid in a very small town in the mountains of Italy for a few years. They told me that they collected grains of wheat all year and protected it from getting wet. Then before Pesach they ground it up and made matzah out of it.
