How bout he says this, then: "It pains me greatly that there are Israelis who are unable to respect our national independence day. The advancements of our country have provided alternatives for all types of ways to be freely and openly Jewish...this country did not exist when I was a child, and definitely not in the time of our parents who had nothing more than war, discrimination, and oppression on Pesach. What's the problem for one day to identify with the Jewish people and honor Yom Ha'atzmaut?"

What does "the Jewish people" have to does with the secular country of Israel? There was a Jewish people long before the modern day country and there would be if the country didn't exist (Gd forbid) - oleh chadash sept 2011
ReplyDeleteNice sentiment, but Metzger's comments were perfectly in line with his position as chief rabbi. There are a lot of issues he could have addressed, but the state-funded rabbinate is provided to promote religion, not the state.
