Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day

For 64 years this issue has not been dealt with properly, and now we are standing before the possibility of an historic process will result in the increase in the number of people serving - whether in the army or in national service - from the age of 18, without causing a tear in the nation.
I believe that this process will succeed only if it will be implemented in stages, though the staged implementation I refer to is very ambitious. A few years ago the number of those being drafted was very low - almost nothing. Last year the number was at 2,400. We are talking the reach 6000  within 4 years.
Suggestions to immediately draft all haredim from the age of 18 are in the category of "tofasta merubah lo tofasta" - overreaching....
These types of suggestions are good for headlines, but it is doubtful they can be implemented in practice. My thoughts on the matter havent changed. Long before the Supreme Court canceled the Tal Law, I said I would bring a solution that would increase the sharing of the burden in a staged manner, from both the haredim and the Arabs, without causing a rift in the public. A more equal division of the burden is important for our national strength, and unity is important for our national strength. I am responsible to try to bring a solution, together with you, that will achieve these two objectives together, so our national strength will be strengthened and not weakened.

  2. He's right. These kinds of major societal shifts can only be done gradually.

  3. "whether in the army OR IN NATIONAL SERVICE" (Emphasis mine) See? Even Bibi says it. So why is the whole Haraedi world going berserk?
