Quote of the Day
By the Dati Leumi there are 3 values: the Torah of Israel, the Nation of Israel, and the Land of Israel. By us, the Torah is the only value.

I think its time he looked for a new job as a rosh kollel
ReplyDeleteWhere was this said?
ReplyDeletein an interview in Yediots weekend edition about how Shas feels regarding Bayit Yehudi replacing them and the changes that will occur because of it, including how Bet Shemesh will be affected
DeleteOK dude so I have a mayor-ship in Uganda to offer you....
ReplyDeleteWay to go Rafi... looks like you've kicked off your 'elect anybody but Abutbol' campaign already...
ReplyDeleteeven anybody might be better than Abutbol, but I want someone who will most likely do a good job running the city, regardless of affiliation
Deletebut I did not argue with him or say anything about the quote because I dont know that it is wrong. I found it interesting, and it goes against what I have heard, and it lays out what is perhaps a stark difference between communities, but I dont know if it is correct or not.
DeleteHA! the good mayor needs to bone up on his sfat emet. the SE wrote that after the chet haegel, moshe had to choose between the torah and bnei yisrael, moshe chose the latter. we learn from this a) there are multiple values b) the am comes before everything, even the torah.
ReplyDeleteDerech Eretz is greater than Torah - so it is written. Need I say more!
ReplyDeleteHis statement sounds very accurate, and that is exactly what is wrong with Haredi leadership. They don't know that Torah without derech eretz (the people of Israel) and kedma (the land of Israel) isn't the Torah at all!
ReplyDeleteAbutbol makes a good point. One of the primary jobs of the mayor of any city is to work with the national government to get funding for the city budget. Mayor Vaknin was excellent at this (Even if 10% went into his pocket), and Mayor Abutbol has been excellent at this well due to Shas's role in the coalition. (This, BTW, was an excellent reason NOT to vote for Learner in the previous election. Though a list sharing scheme had him as number 42 on Likud's list, he was not Likud affiliated and would not likely have brought significant natinal funding to Bet Shemesh).
ReplyDeleteThis is an important reason to Vote for Eli Cohen, Likud's mayoral candidate, as he is the ONLY candidate positioned to bring large scale national funding to bet Shemesh.
I agree. I have been thinking about this point as well. Abutbol had an "in" with the Interior Minister, that benefited to some extent Bet Shemesh. He was funneled money the city might not otherwise have gotten.
ReplyDeleteI would not call that a reason to vote for any given candidate, knowing his relationship with the Interior minister, but it is something to take into account. Now that Eli Yishai will not be IM, perhaps it is in Bet Shemesh's interests to vote for whichever candidate is aligned with whomever the new IM will be. And by Abutbols logic, he should support that candidate as well.
