Jerusalem to remain stateless

A couple  years ago Menachem Zivotovsky went on a mission to change the world. This child sued the United States of America to force it to follow a law passed by Congress that would relate to Jerusalem as part of Israel on US passports. US passports for people born in Jerusalem say only "Jerusalem" as place of birth rather than "Jerusalem, Israel".

That situation has now been resolved, though not the way many Americans living in Israel would have liked.

The UD federal appeals court has come to a decision, and that decision is to revoke the law. The court decided to uphold the US foreign policy position that only the president has the right to determine the recognition of Jerusalem as being part of Israel or not. The judge said, "the president exclusively holds the power to determine whether to recognize a foreign sovereign".

The Zivotovsky's are considering appealing to the Supreme Court.

I thought the US government was completely based on checks and balances. I did not realize that the word "exclusively" applied to anything in government...

  1. The Congress can, I presume, decide to cease funding the State Department. There obviously are decisions which are made by the President alone.
