Status of the Chief Rabbinate election

The race for the position of Chief Rabbi has brought no honor to anybody, nor to the position. As bad as it has ever been before, it is far worse this time.

No matter who wins, we have already all lost.

That is all.

  1. ...and the government gets the last laugh. It's not looking for a Chief Rabbi; it's looking for a Chief Puppet to execute its orders (pun intended).

  2. We deserve whatever we get.
It is sad, we simply do not want a real rabbi. The Haredim sit on the sidelines because nominating a 'real' Haredi 'Gadol' to be chief rabbi legitimizes the state rabbanut itself. The parve dati-leumi segment is still suffering from 2-3 generations of developing in this country and learning to be their own rabbis so their idea of a Chief Rabbi is someone who will smile nicely and be mamlachti. The Hardalim want a true chief rabbi, but did not plan ahead of time because of the euphoria of uniting with their Mafdal brethen. The non-religious are willing on one hand to abstain from interfering (what the Likud and Avodah generally does), but Lapid, who declared himself at Rav PEron's yeshiva a few years back as the Secular Chief Rabbi, is definitely looking for a chief puppet.

And all the dirt during this 'campaign' (thanks Rav Stav and followers) distances all other rabbis from wanting to get involved. In the past, there was no 'campaign'. There would be almost unanimous consensus by the rabbis who would be nominated, not eight volunteers, and not some barely religious politicians having input.

  3. Josh: Excuse me for saying this, but you are talking absolute nonsense.

The haredim are NOT sitting on the sidelines, but have been actively involved in trying to SABOTAGE the Rabbanut, to make certain that no REAL Rav gets in there, which would dilute their power and authority.

I suggest you look into what happened when Rav Ariel was supposed to be Chief Rabbi 10 years ago and was thwarted by Rav Elyashiv's handlers, who made one of the dirtiest deals ever made in Israeli politics and inserted the corrupt and incompetent Rabbi Metzger in his stead -- CHOSEN BECAUSE they knew he was corrupt and incompetent and knew that Rav Ariel would have attained great prestige and respect amongst the Clal.

    1. Everything I said was absolute nonsense? You must be a troll. B'ezrat Hashem, we'll learn how to undertake proper discussion in the future.
