I guess PM Netanyahu couldnt go with Alan Dershowitz as he was rumored to be planning since the release of the list last week of Jeffrey Epstein associates included Dershowitz.

I am not sure I should be giving this to an enemy of Israel but the irony and lack of self-awareness is just so startling...

while they are invading Ukraine they took the time to criticize Israel for settlement activity in the Golan Heights. And instead of criticizing Israel they criticize Tel Aviv.

These names, mazal and Tov, are fairly common Sephardic names and even in this combination, Mazal Tov, they can be found not infrequently...

Still it is a bit ironic and strange to say Baruch Dayan HaEmes in the same breath as saying Mazal Tov. Though family celebrations (kiddush, bris, bar/bat miztvahs, weddings, etc) must have been a hoot!

The Model of Israeli Irony:

The Jewish Home Party submitted a petition to the Chair of the Elections Committee against the name of "The Zionist Camp" claiming that "they are not really Zionists."

In response, The Zionist Camp submitted a petition  to the Chair of the Elections Committee against the name of "The Jewish Home" claiming that "they are not really Jews."

So the beloved judge who sits as the Chair of the Elections Committee will be forced to rule on and to determine who is a real Zionist, and who is a real Jew.

And what is the name of the beloved judge?

Salim Jobran.

Even "Eretz Nehederet"* could not have written a better skit than this.

The Chief Rabi of Iran recently published a ban on insulting Mohammed and he blamed the victims of the "Charlie Hebdo" terror attack for having insulted Mohammed.

It has been claimed that the Chief Rabbi was pressured to say this by the Iranian government.

What comes to light, though, and I did not know this before (maybe you did?) is that the name of the Chief Rabbi of Iran is Rabbi Ahmadinejad. Rabbi Mashallah Golestan Ahmadinejad, to be specific. same family name as that of the previous president of Iran, a rabid Jew and Israeli hater, founder of the nuclear program.

How rich is that? Rabbi Ahmadinejad criticizes and blames the victims of the terror massacre.

I am not meaning to criticize the Chief Rabbi, and what I said should not be taken that way. It is just commenting on the irony of the last name and it being used in this context. Any such criticism by the Chief Rabbi in this regard should be taken in context, as having come out from within a terror regime and was almost definitely dictated to him with his instructions to make such a statement.

Kikar is reporting that Rav Shmuel Auerbach went to pay a shiva call to Rav Shalom Cohen, who is sitting shiva for the death of his sister.

Kikar reports that among the conversation, Rav Cohen asked Rav Auerbach what to do to bring peace and stop the fighting and division.

That appears to me to be the height of irony. He asked Rav Auerbach how to stop the fighting and division. Rav Auerbach's people (let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say it is only his people and not him) have been fighting for the past few years with the main part of Degel Hatorah. They have split to divisions called Bnei Braq and Jerusalem, while some call them haters and terrorists. They have split from each other in municipal elections, and have threatened to split for national elections. They have caused fights among families, yeshivas have split up, there has been violence...

Is he really the person to ask advice from about keeping things peaceful?

According to the news reports last night, a missile shot by Hamas towards Israel ended up hitting a high-power line that provides electricity to gaza. The result of the strike on the evil Zionists was not the darkening of homes in Ashdod and Ashkelon, but shutting the electricity in Gaza.

70,000 Palestinians living in Khan Yunis and Dir Al Balach spent the evening with no electricity.

The electric company said the situation will be repaired when it will be possible from a security perspective. They fully intend to fix it, but there is a great danger to the lives of employees attempting to repair it while under fire. PM Netanyahu and Minister Silvan Shalom instructed them not to put any lives in danger.

I feel bad for the Palestinians sitting in the dark, but I find it ironic that the Israeli government refused to cut off the flow of electricity for humanitarian reasons, despite both the security situation and the billion shekels of debt incurred by the Palestinians for unpaid electricity bills, despite the many calls to do so from both politicians and the general public, yet it happened anyway because of Hamas.

Something I noticed, but don't understand how it came to be, is that in this years batch of media articles and pictures of Neturei Karta protests against the State of Israel, they were all about the group of Neturei Karta from Bet Shemesh (don't worry - there are still less than 100 including all their kids).

It used to be that they were centered in Jerusalem - Meah She'arim - and had smaller enclaves in other areas such as Bet Shemesh. Now it seems Bet Shemesh must have somehow become their main enclave.

I have no intention to link to any of those articles, to show any of their pictures or to relate to their protests in any way.

In light of that, I drove through RBS B right before Yom Ha'atzmaut and my wife needed to run into a store. While waiting in the car, I noticed the side street right where I was was named 'Mitzpe HaRash"ap'. I have no idea who the Rasha"p was or what the acronym of his name stands for, but I found that street and its location to be highly appropriate. Rasha"p, after all, also the acronym for "Reshut HaPalastinit" - The PLO. So right in the stronghold of the Neturei Karta, one of the local streets bears a name similar to that of the PLO. I thought that was a bit of irony worth sharing...


And on that note, I will share with you a story I heard recently about the Neturei Karta. Supposedly, if it is true, the Brisker Rav was talking with Rav Amram Blau, the head of NK, about a protest against the State for something or other.
The Brisker Rav supposedly asked Blau if he would have (or maybe if he did) hel such protests against the government in Russia.
Blau said no, as they would have been shot dead.
The Brisker Rav said that makes you a Zionist - you only protest in Israel because you are confident in the police's ability and gaurantee to guard over you. So you rely on their protection, and their freedom to protest, to protest. You are really a Zionist.

A particularly ironic moment I enjoyed last night while watching Tzippi Livni's speech was when she was describing the formation of Kadima and its more or less "raison d'etre".

Livni was talking about clean government, getting rid of the corruption, and bringing in a new way to Israeli politics.

While she was talking about this, the camera was panning around on the faces of the happy Kadima MKs sitting at the podium behind her. While she was saying this we saw the faces of Tzachi Hanegbi, Roni Bar-On, Ruama Avraham-Balila, Eli Aflalo, and Haim Ramon, all MKs who have either been convicted or are under investigation for various crimes of moral turpitude.

Just a moment of irony I picked up on...

What a small world we live in!

the Merkaz Ha'Rav terrorist attack was stopped by a civilian shooter. The first Jerusalem tractor attack was stopped by his brother in law. The second Jerusalem tractor attack, that just happened a short while ago, was stopped by the teacher of the shooter in the first tractor attack!

Niqnaq pointed out this piece of irony he picked out of the Talkbacks on the Haaretz article reviewing the Olmert scandal and the testimony given today by Moshe (Morris) Talansky.

Talkback #9 writes, "Morris Talansky is the brother of Shoshana Talansky, best friend of Rabbi Meir Kahane’s wife Libby, from the 50s. Some say that if Olmert is brought down directly because of the brother of R. Kahane’s friend, it would see justice partially served, being that Olmert himself, as Likud lawyer, was directly responsible for having Kahane banned from the 1988 elections, because Likud were fearful that his Kach party was going to take 12 Knesset seats from them.."

If that ain't irony, I don't know what is...

This story was reported today in the Yisraeli newspaper.

Three criminals broke into the house of a Diamondaire. They knew the Diamondaire and his family were traveling abroad. They came to the house and got past the security guard by saying they were elevator technicians.

After pocketing the valuables, they got to work on removing the safe. They used a dolly to get the safe into the elevator (they were on the 9th floor of a building). As soon as they put the safe into the elevator, the elevator collapsed from the weight and they got an express ride to the bottom in a freefall.

They escaped leaving the safe in the elevator.

Ironic that they posed as elevator technicians.... God must have a sense of humor.

Shas is announcing that Rav Ovadia Yosef and the Council of Torah Sages (of Shas) are declaring a rally of Selichos in light of the disastrous situation in which the nation of Israel finds itself. Selichos will take place today at 6:00 pm in Rav Ovadia's shul and be broadcast by satellite to various locations.

On the other hand, maybe the issue is the general political and security situation which is pretty bad, especially with what has been going on in Gaza the past few days. If that is the case, is it not ironic that Shas is largely responsible (not completely, but largely) for crowning as king the man, Shimon Peres, who is vastly responsible for the horrible situation in which we find ourselves? Peres is the architect of the Oslo accords, which led to everything that is happening now. Yet Shas felt he was worthy of being the President of Israel, despite his being a rabid left-winger.

Ahhh, the irony of pushing Peres as President and then declaring a day of selichos to daven for the situation.... gotta love it!

Here is the funniest thing I read today - and I quote:

(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority (PA) officials have announced that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has called off a meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, which was scheduled for Thursday in Jericho. They explained that the meeting cannot be held while Israel continues to engage in counter-terrorist activities.

As long as we engage in COUNTER-TERRORISM they cannot meet with us!! What a joke! We are willing to meet with them while they engage in terrorism, but as long as we counter it and fight the terrorism, it is a no-go.
