Draft Law creates crazy situation
This situation with the Draft Law and the elections has taken a strange turn..
The Haredi parties, especially Degel Hatorah, were pushing for the law to be brought to vote, though they never said they got the go ahead from Rav Landau and Rav Hirsch to actually support it. When they sqaw it was not coming and PM Netanyahu was not doing anything about it, ot the point that Netanyahu told them it will have to wait for the next government, they decided to bring down the government over it. Even though they themselves never said they would support it.
So they decde they can't trust Netanyahu any longer and he is just playing with them, constantly making excuses to buy time and kick the can down the road, so they support going to early election (not a big deal, it is a different of 4-6 weeks, not any significant change). The initial vote passes. PM Netanyahu seems to go into panic mode and despite the process of voting the government out having started, he tries to push the bill through, has the committee put on the afterburner and plan to bring it to vote almost immediately, whether he has the votes or not - even if it does not pass he can say I brought it to vote and tried, don't blame me.
Tonight Degel announced they will not play along. We are not interested in Netanyahu just bringing it to a vote. They are also saying it is a bad proposal - though they still have not said if they would or would not support it should it actually come to a vote. They said Netanyahu can't just bring a law, he has to bring a law with a majority vote.
So Netanyahu first said wait until after the elections, Degel said no. Now Netanyahu is pushing for a quick vote on a law and Degel is saying, no, wait until after the elections.
The news is reporting, anonymously of course, that the people around Netanyahu are angry at Degel Hatorah saying Degel played with them. Degel, they are saying, never planned to support the bill, they now just want to blame its failure on Netanyahu. Netanyahu's biggest concern, which is what's pushing him to push the law forward now, is that Degel might not support him for Prime Minister after the next election - he already lost Agudat Israel. And if Degel doesn't, it will be messy for Shas as well.
So they are each blaming the other for the failure of a bill that neither side, seemingly, wanted. Degel spent four years ignoring the fact that Netanyahu was trying to not bring the bill forward and only make it look like he was taking it seriously to keep them happy. Netanyahu spent four years saying this bill (that he clearly never actually intended to bring to vote) would bring 23000 haredim to the army within 3 years while ignoring the fact that the Haredi leadership repeatedly said, despite pushing for a bill, that despite any passed law not a single Haredi would conscript because of it.
Will Netanyahu successfully push a law through with a majority vote this week and save himself? We'll see what happens.

The Knesset Games
Itamar Ben Gvir and Betzalel Smotritch just pulled some nice shtick. Ben Gvir took his party out of the government coalition (over the hostage deal) but did not really want to give everything up. To remind you, initially Otzma and Hatzionut ran together on a joint list. That meant that when the jobs were given out, some of the MKs came in as a result of the Norwegian Law from alternating parties. They split up after the election but still, MKs from each party served as a result of the other party.
When Ben Gvir pulled his party out, Smotritch decided to punish them by resigning from his ministerial position, thus kicking out MK Kroizer from the Knesset, and then Smotritch would take his position back. Taking back the ministerial position would not put Kroizer back in as MK - the Norwegian Law can only be applied once per MK (per Knesset), and Smotritch would have to resign from the Knesset, which he would not do for Kroizer even if he could..
They ended up not playing this game because Ben Gvir wanted to keep his guy in despite not being part of the coalition. He negotiated with Smotritch and they worked out a deal by which Smotritch would not resign, thus leaving Kroizer in. Kroizer would commit to voting with the coalition. On any vote he plans to vote against the coalition he would give 48 hours notice, enabling Smotritch to decide whether or not to resign and kick Kroizer out. And additionally Almog Cohen would be left in place as he was not following Otzma decisions anyway and was voting with the coalition even when Otzma decided not to.
Games.
Others can play games too.
It is being reported that Minister Yitzchak Goldknopf (of UTJ) is considering resigning from his ministerial position, go back to the Knesset, then take back his ministerial position while keeping his Knesset seat. This would kick his "Norwegian MK", Yitzchak Pindrus from Degel Hatorah, out of the Knesset but Goldknopf is more concerned with getting himself more power in his fight over the Draft Law and taking back his Knesset seat will give him back his Knesset vote.
To that end, his aide, Motti Bebchik, has been checking within UTJ what the ramifications of such a move would be. Bebchik reportedly checked in With Uri Maklev to see if Goldknopf resigns and does this shtick if Maklev (from Degel) would retaliate and also resign his [deputy] ministerial position to kick out Moshe Roth (from Agudath Israel) from the Knesset being his Norwegian MK. And if they do this, Meir Porush (from Agudath Israel) might also resign to kick out his Norwegian MK Yaakov Asher (from Degel Hatorah).
And Degel has warned that if Goldknopf resigns and pulls this shtick leading to the removal of two Degel MKs, they may vote against approving him as minister when he tries to take back his ministerial position.
Friction in UTJ...
It remains to be seen if Goldknopf will make his move. Degel also threatened to not re-approve Smotritch (unless he commits to supporting the Draft Law) but that, so far, ended up not being a factor and it is unlikely they would have carried out their threat. I think the threat against Goldknopf is more real than against Smotritch due to their internal politics and friction.

Mobilizing To Help Or Learning
Rav Dov Landau, one of the two leading rabbonim of Degel Hatorah, doesn't like what he has been seeing, what we have all been seeing, over the past few weeks since the war began on Simchas Torah with the Hamas massacre in southern Israel.
We have seen Israel go to war, and at the same time that the front lines mobilized, the home front also mobilized, and the Haredi community has mostly been a big part of the home front mobilization. We see people from the Haredi community getting involved as much as anyone else - whether it is raising funds to buy equipment for the soldiers, whether it is donating for the various causes, grilling for the soldiers, bring soldiers food and equipment, tying tzitzis, visiting army bases and raising morale, helping the displaced people from southern Israel, tefilla and learning for the success of the soldiers and for the return of the hostages, and even with over 2000 Haredi men voluntarily signing up for army service.
While most of us have loved the spirit of all Israelis at this time, and of Jewish communities around the world, including the Haredi communities, as the saying goes in the yeshiva world, daas baaleibatim hefech daas torah - the wisdom of laymen is the opposite of the wisdom of daas torah. Rav Landau does not look at all that spirit and volunteerism and home front mobilization as a good thing.
Rav Landau published an open letter about this to the Haredi community today in the Yated Neeman. In the letter Rav Landau writes that all Torah learners and all Haredim should know that we only have torah learning and nothing else. Those involved in other activities who pretend that they are bringing salvation from the dangers around us should know they are causing damage to themselves, their children and to their families and to others.
A phrase that has been used a lot in other contexts over the past year applies here, as well. What was, will no longer be. I can only imagine that this letter is a result of the fear, or maybe just awareness, of that.

Degel says it is ok to break agreements
Rav Dov Landau, one of the leading rabbonim of Degel Hatorah today (since the recent death of Rav Gershon Edelstein, Rav Landau shares the leadership mantle with Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch) laid down an atom bomb last night in the realm of municipal elections.
This big dispute between Dergel Hatorah and Shas began with the situation in Elad. Before the previous elections, Shas and Degel signed an agreement that Shas would support Degel's candidate (Yisrael Pindrus) and in the upcoming elections Degel would support Shas's candidate (Yehuda Butbol). Shas kept their side and supported Pindrus for mayor of Elad. Pindrus got disqualified for technical reasons (it was determined he did not live in the city as required), and the incumbent Yisrael Porush won another term. Now Shas wants Degel to support their candidate but Degel is saying no. They are making excuses why they dont have to (Pindrus didnt win, Shas didnt do enough, etc) and Shas is saying it is not our fault he was disqualified, that was your problem for not making sure everything was kosher, we kept our side of the deal, now keep your side.
that fight in Elad has led to a breaking down of the Haredi agreements and general working relations) in other Haredi cities (including Bet Shemesh).
So last night Rav Landau issued a letter relating to the issue. In Degel right now, Rav Landau's word is the final word and this is now Degel's official position on the matter.
Rav Landau says that the issue of the mayorship is not specific to a party but is fore the good of Jewish issues, education, keeping the torah and mitzvos and everything that entails. Therefore all agreements that were signed between different parties have no value and obligate no one. Making anything dependent on specific sects and groups is doing a disservice....
So, if Degel believes that agreements do not need to be kept, nobody will any longer make agreements with Degel. Right now they agree to something because that is good for them but tomorrow they will not keep it because yesterday's concern is no longer relevant and they don't feel obligated by it.
Another point is that this shows very nicely, in my opinion, why many do not like Degel Hatorah. There is a certain haughtiness in their approach that only they can decide what is good for Judaism, for torah and education. Is Shas or Aguda any less frum than Degel? Even without getting into other streams and approaches being able to have a voice - just within Haredi Judaism, Degel feels they can break agreements because Shas (or anyone else) cannot be relied upon for what is good for Judaism and only Degel can be the arbiter of that. It might be just me, but I think this approach upsets many people.

the most interesting elections
With municipal elections nearly upon us, I think the most interesting arena to watch will be the Bnei Braq elections. And yes, that will be even more interesting than my own home town of Bet Shemesh which has its own intrigue and excitement going on.
Bnei Braq has not had real elections, at least not in a long time. the Degel and Aguda parties had an arrangement, officially agreed upon, by which they would divvy up the municipal offices, with a rotation arrangement, including the mayor's office. No need for elections as only one candidate would run for mayor each time.
Because of all sorts of broken deals around the country, mostly starting with Elad, Shas is upset at Degel and has decided they want a piece of the pie in Bnei Braq as well. They supposedly offered to join the rotation agreement and making it a 3 way rotation, but has so far been refused. So, Shas decided to run its own candidate, Uriel Buso, currently a Shas MK and formerly a deputy mayor in Petach Tikva.
Supposedly the numbers indicate that Shas could take up to about a third of the votes in Bnei Braq, though I am not sure there is any accurate count, considering no municipal elections have been held there in ages.
If Degel and Aguda continue their arrangement, a third of the votes (and that is if they maximize their vote) is not going to get Buso the victory.
However, as Kikar reports, Buso is actually polling much higher and seems to have a good chance of winning the race, if the polls are to be believed. That makes this an interesting and watchable race. If Buso wins that means Bnei Braq, the stronghold of the Haredi community, the stronghold of UTJ, not just is no longer, but it would also mean that the public is no longer listening to the gedolim. For Buso to win it means [some of] the Ashkenazi residents, a fairly significant amount, will have to ignore the instructions of the rabbonim and vote for the Shas candidate instead of the Degel-Aguda candidate. That makes this super interesting. I do wonder if we are seeing a major drift in the culture of the Haredi community where people start to vote for what they think is best rather than for whom they are told to vote...

coalition imploding already?
wow, the news the past couple of days has been insane with what looks like an implosion in the coalition "negotiations" (in quotes because they should have been finished already and supposedly were but keep being sort of reopened). Specifically with UTJ, and more specifically with the Degel Hatorah faction.
First, I get that they are at a bit of a loggerheads with their partners in Agudat Israel. Ok, they disagree on some points, want to share power and influence as equally as possible and have some things to work out. What does all that have to do with Netanyahu and the coalition agreements? work that out between yourselves. Netanyahu agreed to all your demands, for the most part, largely, and now Degel doesnt like that Aguda is doing x, y and z - instead of complaining to Netanyahu and demanding more, creating yet another conflict in demands they should just work it out with Aguda.
Second, for everyone who was looking forward to the coalition of a "full right wing" government, if this goes through and they dont implode before they even begin, dont forget that this is what you wished for. Nobody can seem to keep their mouths shut and before they even get sworn in they are already chasing one crisis with the next. Each MK/Minister-elect is seemingly trying to outdo the one who said something before and be more extreme.
Third, I dont know how this happened. The political parties that swore by Netanyahu and went with him through thick and thin in the Opposition and elections despite some probably pretty attractive offers to defect and support others are now doing nothing b7ut making it difficult to form a government. I think they realize Netanyahu needs them, giving them all the ability to make, sometimes outrageous, demands, but it still looks like they do not yet realize that they need Netanyahu just as much as he needs them. At some point he wont just not be able to continue meeting their ever-increasing demands, but he also wont want to, the way they are making him crazy. Will he go to Lapid and/Gantz at some point? I dont know if he is there just yet, but he has to be regretting the bedfellows he has chosen.
Fourth, I see nothing technically wrong with Goldknopf serving in the security cabinet. he is a politician just like the rest of them and he seems pretty smart and can learn the materials and contribute. I get that Degel doesnt want him in (though it might not be their choice), and I get that he said he only demanded it to show that UTJ is equally deserving as all other parties but he wont fill the slot given to him in the cabinet, but I think he can justifiably take it and fill the position and probably do a decent job of it (though he would probably just be a yes-man for Netanyahu). The moral issue is fair, that he represents a community that mostly does not serve so he should not be involved in making decisions to send other people out to war, when his own community is largely unaffected, but technically he is as worthy as anyone else.
Fifth, and last for now, Degel has once again expressed their opposition to taking ministerial positions so as to not share the responsibility of the government when making decisions that are in opposition to halacha. They brought it up again to criticize Aguda for seemingly planning to take a seat in the security cabinet and adding to the level of responsibility.
Besides for the fact that Aguda does take ministerial positions now based on the decision of their rabbonim, so they should have no problem with it and Degel should accept this just as they already accepted the ministerial issue, this is a prime example of when there is a halachic will there is a halachic way. I havent understood how they differentiate in the level of responsibility of a full minister and of a deputy minister, especially when they negotiate that the deputy should have the authority to the level of a full minister. They are pulling a scam, and now they are using that scam to fight with Aguda who stopped using that scam a few years ago. I dont care about their fight with Aguda, but the concept of being a member of government and taking authority while supposedly not taking responsibility is a sham and a scam.

the fight between Degel and Aguda is stepping up a level.. Degel Hatorah and Yitzchak Pindrus will publicize a lawsuit for slander against Agudat Yisrael lawyer Avremi Yustman for slander and lashon hara after he accused Degel Hatorah of cooperatign with the Reform in the World Zionist Organization.
wow. that's an interesting development. And not just because it is a bunch of Haredi people, the representatives of Haredi Judaism, the representatives of the gedolim, suing each other in court rather than in beis din.
Ravina then added a response from Agudat Yisrael saying they are not impressed or intimidated from a lawsuit trying to silence them. In real time we heard from Degel people about the agreement in WZO they were working on and everyone saw then how Degel affiliated people got all the jobs, but we kept quiet because they told us it was approved by the gedolei yisrael. If necessary we will prove the connection between Eretz Hakodesh and Degel Hatorah. We have all the documentation and whatever might be necessary.
oh man, this is getting nasty. After all this burning of bridges I am not even sure how they can go back to working together if they would theoretically want to

Agudat Yisrael hits back at Degel Hatorah
I like it. Agudat Yisrael is hitting back at Degel Hatiorah. Degekl is claiming to be upset that the Belzer Rebeb approved that the Belz educational system should adopt the core curriculum studies so as to get full funding form the Ministry of Education (they say they are doing it so their teachers can get a decent salary and stop leaving for greener pastures). Degel wont let them into Chinuch Atzmai, so this is the only route left open tot hem, but Degel considers this to be a serious breach in Haredi Judaism and the fidelity to a pure educational system.
Aguda is now hitting back. They are attacking Degel for double standards - while they criticize Belz for the educational decisions, a decision that only affects internal Belz schools, whiel Degel Hatora ran a faction in the World Zionist Organization elections and is sitting in a coalition with the Reform - just to get jobs and money.
source: Kikar
This is a questionable argument because Degel did not officially run in the WZO elections and join. The Eretz Hakodesh faction is technically independent, run by Rabbi Pesach Lerner and overseen by Yitzchak Pindrus, MK of Degel Hatorah. Even MK Uri Maklev of Degel has admitted that Eretz Hakodesh is a daughter faction fo Degel Hatorah. Shas joined WZO several years earlier in a more official capacity. Degel only joined WZO in the most recent election but they did so while hiding behind a different name.
So, Degel can attack Aguda for adopting some increased secular studies for money but Degel can join WZO and sit in a coalition with the Reform for money?
Pindrus vehemently denies the whole thing saying Degel has nothing to do with it. As mentioned, in an interview this evening Maklev admitted the connection between Degel and Eretz Hakodesh.
I love it.

Belz and Degel back to square one
Back in January it became known to the public that Belz was negotiating with the Ministry of Education to establish its internal school systems as Haredi public schools, in which their students would study core curriculum subjects, and they worked out a deal regarding supervision and inspections along with full financial support. Belz was upset that Degel Hatorah was not allowing them to join the Chinuch Atzmai system, and they needed a solution to their deep financial crisis, and could no longer go it independently. Belz came under heavy criticism from other Haredi factions, but Degel persisted int heir refusal to allow new members into Chinuch Atzmai.
It seems that Belz pursuing this arrangement with the Ministry of Education, and having come to an agreement, is actually what is behind the potential split between the Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael factions of UTJ. Degel Hatorah is incensed that Belz would take on the core curriculum studies in exchange for money, something that they have fought valiantly against until now and has made this issue one of their central issues. Even though Belz is only doing it because Degel refuses to let them into Chinuch Atzmai.
Agudat Yisrael is now proposing a compromise, that would seemingly solve the entire dispute and allow the two factions to run together as a united party.
What is the proposed solution?
They are proposing that Degel Hatorah allow Belz to join Chinuch Atzmai and get funding for its schools through them and they will then put an end to their program to join the Ministry of Education.
I would note this is what they have been proposing all along, with Degel regularly refusing. this proposal is nothing new, just couched in the political framework of the upcoming elections.
While there is no word yet as to a response from Degel Hatorah, unless they now feel backed into the corner I dont see why they would change their opinion now when they have not all along. Degel is confident they can run it alone, if their rabbonim tell them to, so they probably dont feel much pressure to accept the deal now. I am not saying they shouldn't, just that I dont see anything special about this offer that is different form what happened until now, so don't see why they would - unless the rabbonim tell them to accept it just to avoid splitting the party. Basically, 9 months later they are still arguing about the same exact thing they were back then with each side still standing firm on the same exact spot that they were before..
As I said back then, keep saying no without providing an alternative, a solution of some sort, and they will go find their own solution, one you might not like. This is true almost 100% of the time in almost all situations. And now they, both sides, are stuck with the consequences of those decisions.

Agudat Yisrael threatens to run with Chabad and Peleg
The Haredi media is labeling all the infighting comments as threats.
Gafni is "threatening" to have Degel Hatorah faction run independently from Agudat Yisrael faction, if his concerns about fair leadership of the joint party (ie Degel gets more power) are not addressed.
Aguda has been responding that Gafni should stop threatening and if he wants to run alone, he should just go ahead and do it, Aguda will pass the threshold, and only the gedolim, the Moetzes, will decide what they do, not Gafni and his threats.
Now Agudat Yisrael is threatning back. Their threat, though I am not sure why it is a threat, is that if they run independently, they will run jointly with Chabad and with Peleg Yerushalmi instead of with Degel.
In my opinion this is not much of a threat. It is especially not overly intimidating.
Regarding Chabad, they have never officially supported nay political party in Israeli elections. They at times have unofficially encouraged support for a specific party and at times for a vague political direction, but they never ran their own candidates and never officially supported any party. I find it hard to believe that they will suddenly officially start supporting Agudat Yisrael and maybe even run a joint list with them, though it is possible. Doing so though, should they break with tradition, is hardly a threat. It would bring more votes for the Haredi parties, as many Chabadniks until have supported, or leaned to supporting, candidates like Ben Gvir, and while some surely supported the joint Haredi party, many did not, and an official Chabad position or run would surely get more Chabadniks to vote for the relevant Haredi party instead of for other parties. Degel might lose a few votes form it, probably not too many, but Haredi politics in general would probably gain a lot more votes.
Regarding Peleg, the threat seems to be that Agudat Yisrael would be brining them into the political scene, and Degel and Peleg dont get along. Still not much of a threat, as again it would be increasing the Haredi vote in general, as in previous elections most Peleg people didnt bother to vote because they didnt want to support Degel Hatorah.I would recommend Agudat Yisrael be careful about who they get into bed with and the Peleg extremists are not going to make life easy for them, but it will likely bring in some votes, at least for the one upcoming election, even if they break it off afterwords and dont run again together in the future.

the real effect of the Smotritch - Ben Gvir agreement
the deal signed between Smotritch and Ben Gvir (Ichud and Otzma) is likely to have two significant effects.
The first will be to help PM Netanyahu. If the united party passes the threshold, this will be a big assist to Netanyahu in forming a coalition and achieving the necessary 61 mandates. While the Bennett side of the National Religious says they will not recommend or support Netanyahu, Smotritch has been more pro-Netanyahu..
The second will be to hurt UTJ. Many Haredim, especially the more nationalist Haredim and more modern Haredim have supported Ben Gvir and even Smotritch. Many of those might have voted UTJ in the past because Ben Gvir was not seen as a realistic vote. Now with Ben Gvir seeming (as of now) as possibly realistic, those voters might abandon UTJ and vote for Ben Gvir.
Besides for that, UTJ (the Degel faction, at least) has campaigned heavily among the Chardal communities in recent elections. UTJ knew that the Chardal communities were not happy with the Bennett led party representing the DL, and took advantage by campaigning to that crowd and pulling many of those voters. Now with Smotritch and Ben Gvir running their own party separate from Bennett, they will likely take most of those voters back from UTJ.
Degel might not be affected. With their new deal with Aguda, the fourth Degel candidate holds the 7th joint slot - Pindrus will pretty definitely get in this time. It is the 8th seat that might suffer, and that is the chassidic side of UTJ.

Degel Hatorah is now a Zionist party
I never paid much attention to the inner workings of the World Zionist Organization. to me it just felt like an organization for arranging jobs for cronies and for funneling money to connected groups. The recent WZO elections provided some intrigue, but I still did not pay too much attention to it.
Now that the right wing parties have all come out ahead and recently signed a "wall to wall" coalition agreement, WZO is back in the news, and it got me thinking.
First, the Reform and Conservative and leftist groups are all upset. Their stronghold of power and connections was "taken" from them, and they are upset about it. Boo Hoo. They lost the elections fair and square and that's what happens. They should take some example from their opponents and learn how to mobilize their supporters.
Second, back during the election period I wrote about some of the intrigue, mostly about the debates among the Haredi rabbonim as to whether the Haredi community abroad should vote in the elections or not. I said that I am not a big fan of going to into someone else's house and taking control, even according to the rules. I still am somewhat uncomfortable with what happened, but they played according to the rules, so it is what it is.
Third, and the main point of what I wanted to mention, is the Eretz Hakodesh faction taking up a significant role in the running of WZO, in addition to just joining the organization.
Does anyone remember about ten years ago when Shas decided to join WZO and Degel Hatorah was highly critical of Shas for abandoning Haredi principles and joining a Zionist organization? And now Degel Hatorah, under a different name, has also joined the World Zionist Organization. And not just joined, but is also taking a significant role. Eretz Hakodesh has an Israeli office that is run by people from Degel Hatorah (among others), including MK Yitzchak Pindrus and Rav Nechemia Malinowitz.
So Degel Hatorah is now a Zionist organization. Mazel tov.
Also, Bibi turns out to have been right. Back in 2010 when Shas joined and Degel was critical, Bibi expressed dismay that Degel didn't join as well and said that he expects that in a few years they too will recognize the importance and influence and will join. And now they did. It took a little more than the 3 or 4 years Bibi mentioned, but in the end he was basically right. They saw the money and influence and decided there is no reason to not take a piece of that pie. As King Solomon said, והכסף יענה את הכל.
Good luck to all of them.

turning Rav Chaim into Baba or Santa Chaim
For years I have been saying that the Litvishe community has been adopting chassidishe and sefardic practices and absorbing them into their own customs and behavior. The most glaring ha always the turning of the Litvishe gedolim into chassidishe rebbes, in the form of brachos and segulos and whatnot.
According to a report on Behadrei, Rav Chaim Kanievsky should soon be called Baba Chaim, or maybe Santa Chaim, instead of Rav Chaim or Rav Kanievsky. And this is not a knock on Rav Kanievsky, but on those doing this to him.
According to the report, with elections just over a week away, Degel Hatorah feels there is a sense of complacency and frustration among the people. They are worried that many people just won't bother turning up to vote. People are tired of the political stalemate, they see no point in getting involved or being passionate about it.
To that end, Degel is working on coming up with ideas that will motivate people and get them out. The latest plan is that Degel activists will go out daily to different communities around the country, especially in the periphery and will bring with them a trailer with a mobile home that will also be carrying the chair of Rav Chaim Kanievsky - the same chair he sits on every day for hours while learning Torah.
The people participating in these rallies will each get an opportunity to sit, for a minute, on the chair of Rav Chaim Kanievsky and say some tehillim, accept upon himself a good deed/As well, the participants will be able to write down a personal request from Rav Chaim.
The article says that some of the members of the Kanievsky house are opposed to the idea, but ultimately it will be brought to him for approval and he will decide.
Mixing religion and politics always does more damage than good...

Degel Hatorah worried about the date of the elections
Interestingly, Kikar is reporting that leadership in the Degel Hatorah faction of UTJ is concerned about the date of elections landing during the Pesach vacation from yeshiva.
Before continuing, I must point out that the date of elections was set by PM Benjamin Netanyahu upon consultation with all his coalition partners and was agreed upon by them all, so the date and how it happens during "bein hazmanim" was not something anti-haredi or collusion to hurt the haredi parties or anything like that. The Haredi parties were equally central in deciding the date of the elections.
So, why are they concerned? What is wrong with the date?
From what the leadership is hearing from their local municipal representatives and leadership they are concerned that because of the vacation period the yeshiva guys might be less involved in the election headquarters than they normally are, and Degel Hatorah, the entire UTJ really, rely heavily on the energy and the work of the yeshiva guys in the local headquarters all around the country.
They don't really say why the young men might not volunteer for the election work, but it seems the reason is that they will likely prefer to travel around the country vacationing on their regular tiyulim rather than work for the elections.
To that end, the party leadership is putting together a "secret"plan to motivate and mobilize these young men and get them to work for the party rather than give it up and prefer their vacations. You can see the Kikar article (linked above) for information about those plan).
Caveat: We do not know the reality yet as it is in the future. We only know what the leadership expects to happen and is worried about, so I base my coming comments on that alone.
I find it interesting that the yeshiva guys will work for the election campaigns in every single election as long as it means taking time off of learning and yeshiva schedule but won't give up their vacation schedule for that. We always hear how it is so important the Haredi parties do well in the elections in order to save the torah learning for the future ability to continue learning. Because of that they justify taking away so many yeshiva guys from the beis medrash to work for the campaigns for days or even weeks. Yet that level of importance is obviously not ingrained in the young men - only in the leadership. The young men, on the other hand, seem to take it as a break from the rigorous torah study, as an exciting time, fun, excitement, and perhaps in other forms of enjoyment. When it means giving up their own fun and relaxed schedule it seems they are not quite so willing and happy to participate.
Either the leadership just uses them cynically - [mostly] free labor, a motivated and fired up electorate and all that - or perhaps the leadership really believes it but that level of importance was never imparted to the young men in the yeshivas. If the leadership really believes it, maybe it is time to work on a program to imbue all that knowledge and belief in why it is so important and impart it to the younger generation.

Rav Chaim Kanievsky on making aliya before the elections
According to a report on Matzav, the upcoming elections might not mean as much as they have been made to be.. As a matter of fact, they might be meaningless. They might not even happen at all!
The story goes that someone from abroad went to visit Rav Chaim Kanievsky and get a bracha. he asked Rav Chaim Kanievsky if he should make aliya so that he will be able to vote for Degel hatorah in the upcoming elections.
That's dedication!
Rav Chaim Kanievsky responded that there is no need for this. Rav Chaim explained that Mashiach will be coming before the elections!
The young man was startled and before leaving he asked a grandson of Rav Chaim to confirm and make sure he understood correctly. When the grandson asked Rav Chaim Kanievsky to confirm what had been said, Rav Kanievsky confirmed it.
So, whatever troubles you've got, just hold out until April 9... and don't get too worked up about elections and election campaigns, as they won't really be relevant!
I wonder if Rav Kanievsky is instructing Degel Hatorah to not bother working too hard for these elections...

Quote of the Day
The two parties have run for elections together as one party, though with two separate factions, for the past 25 years..this request is purely technical and will not have any financial repercussions... by us the bride and groom do not see each other for 2 weeks before the wedding, though by the chassidim they have that custom for a longer amount of time.
-- MK Uri Maklev (UTJ), requesting the Knesset approve the request to split Degel and Aguda to two separate parties.
two weeks? They stay away for two weeks? I never heard that - only 1 week! When did it become two weeks?

Bloi tries to scare people to voting for Degel candidate
Tomorrow elections will be held in the ton of Telshe Stone, after its long-time mayor, Avraham Rosenthal, recently died, shortly after being re-elected to the position.
I know almost nothing about the two candidates vying for the top spot in this town - I don't have an opinion as to which of the two will do a better job, nor as to which is more or less deserving.. The only thing I do know is that one candidate, Yitzchak Ravitz, son of former MK Avraham Ravitz, has a good reputation, but he was rejected from Betar. 6 months ago Degel Hatorah in Betar held an internal primary election in preparation for what was then the upcoming municipal elections. Ravitz, who was Deputy Mayor at the time, lost to Dudi Zaltz. After he lost, Degel moved Ravitz out and sent him to Telshe Stone to prepare to run against Rosenthal. The other candidate is Yanky Pelei, and I absolutely nothing about him.
Ravitz had tried to usurp the seat from Rosenthal, but Rosenthal withstood the pressure on him and decided to run for re-election anyway, which he won. There was some bad blood, and Rosenthal supporters, led by his widow, are now supporting Pelei in tomorrow's election, while Degel is supporting Ravitz.
Anyways, with the election tomorrow, it seems Degel is stepping up the pressure to get people to vote for Ravitz. Degel activist and leader Mottka Bloi is warning residents of Telshe Stone that they should not base their vote on emotional or personal reasons against the candidate supported by the gedolim (i.e. Ravitz). Bloi warns that whoever votes against the decision of the gedolim will pay a heavy price through his descendants who will go against him and spend their time enjoying their recreational time in Abu Ghosh. Meaning, their interests will be turned elsewhere, away from Judaism, just because they voted for the other candidate..
I don't know one from the other in Telshe Stone and it does not matter to me who wins the election and who loses, but it is this type of intimidation and fear mongering that I oppose and am repulsed by. Compete in your election on the merits of the candidate. Tell people which candidate your rav supports and remind them of the importance of following the gedolim, if that is what is important in your community. Threats, warnings, fire and brimstone, dire predictions, and other scare tactics are just despicable. In a sense I hope people vote against Bloi's recommendation just to show that the days of intimidation and scare tactics are over.

a united Haredi party
The rumors right now are talking about an agreement being worked on that would have the three Haredi national political parties - Shas, Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael - running together as one united party. The rumors include the gravitas of Rav Chaim Kanievsky who is supposedly behind the idea.
Is it going to happen? I have no idea. It is just a rumor right now, but it is a popular one right now that isn't going away so quickly.
I actually think it is a good idea. I personally see no difference between Degel and Agudah and don't see a reason why they have need to run as two separate parties or factions until now - on a national level, even if not on a municipal level, their needs are the same - mikvas, shuls, yeshivas, kollels, religious issues, child subsidies and all the regular national issues like security and whatnot. I see no reason why they need two separate parties just because these have grandparents who came from Lithuania and the others from Poland. Shas as well, though with Shas there is a slight difference - even though they have become more Haredi over the years, they still appeal to a traditional electorate in addition to their Haredi electorate. And I do not get how their differentiation in representation is necessary or good - it just causes more segmentation.
But will it happen? I have no idea.
My only thought is that with all the high-level politicians denying it, it is probably very likely at this point.

why didn't the Degel reps do it over the past 10 years?
Whenever I see a news item about representatives, city councilmen, of Degel Hatorah and/or Shas requesting or demanding changes or policy from the new mayor of Bet Shemesh, Aliza Bloch, it makes me take pause to wonder.
Before I say why and what about it makes me pause and wonder, I am not even suggesting that their requests or demands are necessarily bad or provocative or an attempt to throw wrenches into Bloch's leadership and efficient running of the city. Perhaps sometimes it is, and perhaps other times they are worthy and legitimate issues that can really deserve a new perspective and approach and possibly a change of policy. Even then.
So, whenever they make demands, and they already have a few times from what I have seen, it makes me wonder - they were the leadership of the city for the past 10 years, and before that as well they were part of the leadership. If they really feel it is an important issue, and perhaps it really is, why did they not deal with it over the past 10-15 years the way they demand Bloch deal with it now. Even when the request or demand is justified, it makes me wonder if they are really make an honest effort or just looking to make trouble.
And I don't have an answer. But it bothers me - it bothers me that they do this and it bothers me that even on issues I think they might be right about I have to wonder if they are being honest, hard working, and truthful or just being opposition troublemakers.
