Reminds me of a picture in a Roman Vishniac book of some boys playing ball on a hot summer day in Poland before the war. They're all shirtless but have peddler's caps on their heads. I asked someone why and he said, "Listen, it's hot you take off your shirt, but to go around with an uncovered head is an aveirah!"
