secular winner of International Bible Quiz

for the first time in 30 years, a non-religious student of the public school system, Sagiv Lugasi, has won the International Bible Quiz yesterday on Yom Haatzmaut.

Mazel tov!

Lugasi must be a prodigy, especially considering how poorly Tanakh is supposedly taught (or so we are told) in the Israeli public school system. Or maybe it is just impressive to see a secular 13 year old student so interested in Tanakh, and to have teachers that encourage him, to be able to accomplish this.

  1. Mazal Tov to Sagiv, who showed an outstanding knowledge of Tanach and is a reminder that the Tanach belongs to the entire Jewish people, not just those who go to religious schools.

Even more impressive was the 3rd place runner up, who goes to a public non-Jewish school (School 31) in Belarus and taught herself Tanach after outside of school hours.

  3. I can't believe the producers thought they could revamp and rejuvenate the finals last year by switching the host to someone else, younger. Avshalom Kor is the perfect host for the event.

I congratulate Sagiv as well but it should be noted that Naomi Cohen was a great runner up and had led the event until that final take-all round. At 1hr 1min 23sec

  4. Just because you do not attend a religious school does not mean you are not personally religious.

    1. Maybe so; but in Israel it would be a bit unusual.

    2. Considering that only about 40% of Israelis describe themselves as "secular" (and even almost all of those are at least somewhat traditional), and only about 20% of kids are in religious schools, that means that about 40% of the kids in secular schools are not secular.

The winner is, in fact, a masorti Sephardi Jew.

  5. I know nothing about this young man besides the little I read of him in the articles in different news media that described him as not religious.

    1. They came under criticism for doing so. His *school* is not religious. He himself is traditional.

  6. Didn't get to see the show but Nach itself is very interesting to many, but if one is not religious but enjoys it and gets to know it well might not be as well versed or learned in Torah, thus enjoying the history of our people and not understanding the real holiness of all of Tanach.

    1. The quiz is on all of Tanach, not just Nach, and most if not all of those who participate see it as far more than just an "interesting" book.
