the Haredi car in the Jerusalem Light Rail trains

The following flyer has been tossed and passed around Haredi areas in Jerusalem..

The flyer complains about the lack of tzniyus, especially in the summer months, on the light rail lines in Jerusalem. It calls upon the Haredi community to have a self-imposed segregation on the rail with people boarding and riding specifically in one car of the train, the first car of the back half of the train. The flyer calls for people to not cause any chilul hashem but to do this pleasantly. By doing this and having all the bnei torah there, automatically there will be more tzniyus and purity.

As long as this is not being imposed and remains voluntary and each person decides to do this and participate, there is nothing wrong with it. I hope they won't start shouting at other people that they need to switch cars and this is the Haredi car and things like that. As long as it remains voluntary, all is good.

It also does not say this car is for men only or women only and the other gender should go to a different car. Hopefully it means this will not be forcing gender segregation.

  1. Read the fine print. It explicitly asks women to find another seat. (The phrasing is polite, but let's be real.)

    1. No it doesn't. It says that people should teach their daughters to sit in other cars; it says nothing about asking women on the train to move.

    3. And you honestly expect us to believe that that's all it will be? Are we supposed to simply forget what happened on the buses only a few years ago?

    4. I have no idea what will be. I do know that the sign does not say what Avi claims it says.

  2. Oh, you know full well where it would lead.

  3. If I understand this correctly, it is only the "Bnei Torah," not their wives or daughters, who are to benefit from this modest and holy space. The wives and daughters should be sent to the cars where the atmosphere is the opposite of that.

And , were the tzniusdik wives and daughters to remain with the "Bnei Torah," the atmosphere in that car would be less modest and pure.

    Did I get this right?

    1. I see what you are saying but that was not how I read it. I assumed bnei torah just meant frum (haredi) people, men and their families. The tzanua women will help create the tzanua atmosphere.
I dont know which reading is correct

    2. in the past such attempts have said to separate men and women explicitly (such as attempts to turn certain bus lines into voluntary mehadrin buses), so not saying it explicitly this time made me think that is not the goal.

    3. It says that the women and girls are to find somewhere else to sit Hard to tell if that means elsewhere in the tzniuusdik car or elsewhere on the train.
      Hard to tell.
However I agree Let's give it the benefit of the doubt and say it means elsewhere within the tzniuusdik and holy car.

    4. I’m all for it until the shadchun asks “what car does your son/daughter sit in” on the shidduch resume.
