Matan Kahane will not be the Minister for Religious Affairs in the next government. He knows it and the Haredim also know it. The message was passed on to them, and they accept it. He added in response to my question, if Shas refuses to join our coalition headed by Benny Gantz, the Minister of Religious Affairs will be offered to Gafni.
They need to try to persuade the Haredi parties to join their coalition, so I get it. I don't like it, but I get it. This just makes them like the Likud, on religious matters - just outsource the entire thing to the Haredim and dont get involved. They can promise the Haredi parties it won't go to Kahane but will go to someone else - it doesnt have to be promised to them in advance, while they are saying they wont join a Gantz coalition. Negotiate positions after elections, not before. And if the Haredi parties still refuse to join, would he then give it to Kahane? Would they then accuse him of breaking a promise?

Pashkevil of the Day
I have not done a pashkevil of the day in a while, but this one is very interesting
for a community saying we will only join a coalition under Benjamin Netanyahu and will not sit with Gantz I find it funny that they will then go ahead and put up a pashkevil all over Haredi areas saying Gantz added Matan Kahane who destroyed the Torah world to his party and by doing so he is stabbing the Haredi Judaism community in the back.
I like how they always know how to play victim. They say we wont sit with you but then when you do anything they dont like you are stabbing them in the back.

Kahane and Eizenkot join with Gantz and Saar
The biggest news today that went almost unnoticed because of a terrorist attack near the Kotel late last night is that Gadi Eizenkot, a former IDF general and Chief of Staff, has decided to enter politics. He has come to an agreement with Benny Gantz and Gideon Saar, head of Kachol Lavan, and they will all run together on a joint slate called Hamachaneh Hamamlachti. Gantz promised to hold primaries in the party before the next election, and reportedly that is what swayed Eizenkot to run with Gantz rather than Lapid. Eizenkot will hold the number 3 slot on the joint list, and will have three other slots for his people in somewhat possibly realistic positions as well, assuming this gives them the boost they are looking for. As of now, Matan Kahane at the number 9 slot is realistic, while the others (with the candidates as of yet still unnamed) are not yet but could be if they get a nice boost.
I dont know much about Eizenkot. He brings value with his name and seems to be popular, though by now we all know that success in the IDF does not necessarily translate to success in politics. We shall yet see what his beliefs are (some are claiming his political beliefs are closer to extreme left than center right), and more importantly whether he has staying power and if he has what it takes to build a political base and not just ride on his name.
I think Matan Kahane joining with Eizenkot and Saar/Gantz is a good move for him and for them. I believe he has enough of a political following and will bring some additional support to the party, and it gives Kahane a good platform for his ideas. I like that he is interested in the religious side of Israel and wants to improve and change things for the better (though plenty disagree that it is for the better, but from his perspective it is). Most parties and politicians until now, all of them actually, preferred to not be interested at all in religious affairs and would just outsource all religious issues to the Haredi parties. I think it is good that other people are actually interested in them and not just pawning them off out of disinterest.
Interestingly, MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ), who until now has supposedly unofficially blacklisted Matan Kahane warning, supposedly, other parties that if they bring him into their ranks UTJ wont work with them in the future, reportedly said that this is a fatal mistake. Gafni has been floating rumors that if Netanyahu does not garner 61 mandates in the upcoming elections, all bets are off and they could potentially work with Benny Gantz in forming a coalition. Until now all the other parties (except for Lieberman's) have been tiptoeing around the Haredim since this election cycle began, even though the Haredi MKs keep saying they will only work with Netanyahu and even go with him to the Opposition, hoping that they could draw the Haredim into a possible centrist coalition. Gafni is the only one who has said this is possible, and even Gafni himself said the other day, after a talk with Netanyahu, that he wont go to a coalition with anyone else, only the Right behind Netanyahu. So I am not sure what Gafni is now saying the merge with [Eizenkot and] Kahane is a fatal mistake if he wont work with them anyway. He said he wont work with them and only with Netanyahu a thousand times, including just a couple of days ago, after saying once or twice that Gantz is a possibility, so if that door was actually ever open, which is unlikely and probably just false hope, it seems now to be closed.
Overall, Eizenkot and Kahane joining Gantz and Saar, I think, is a good move for them all. We'll see how long it last though. And we'll see if it helps them either form a coalition or prevent Netanyahu form forming one. Likud also courted Eizenkot, so presumably this could potentially pull away some voters Likud was trying to attract.

Matan Kahane to Yesh Atid?
MK? Minister? Deputy Minister? Matan Kahane is still politically homeless for the upcoming elections. It looks like he wont be in Yamina due to disagreements with Ayelet Shaked, and he has yet to find a party to take him in. Some wont touch him with a ten feet pole because the Haredi parties have basically vetoed him and have insinuated they wont join a coalition with any party that Kahane serves in as MK/Minister.
That is a shame. He did good work and seems straight and decent. He is the one person who was willing to put his beliefs into actions and say the Haredi parties dont have a monopoly on Judaism and make political changes based on his beliefs of how things should work. Agree with him or not on any specific reforms he pushed, that is a value I believe is sorely lacking in the Knesset. I like people with integrity, even if I disagree with them, and think the country's leadership would do well to have people with such integrity, whether they are on the right or left or center side of the political spectrum.
I would not vote for any specific party just because of Matan Kahane, but I think Kachol Lavan or Yesh Atid would do well to have Kahane join their ranks.
I get that Kachol Lavan wont take him because of Gantz's belief that only he can bring the Haredim into an alternate coalition, and he likely loses that with Matan Kahane. He might technically be right but he has no government with the Haredim because he doesnt have enough other parties to form such a coalition as Likud wont sit under him, Lieberman and the Haredi parties wont sit together, as is the same with Yesh Atid from the Haredi perspective. Labor should be fine, but I doubt the Haredim would sit with Meretz or Arab parties, considering their behavior during their recent term in the Opposition.
Yesh Atid would do well to take in Kahane, and I think they would get a nice boost of centrist-right voters by doing so. I dont know if Matan Kahane would join Yesh Atid but Yesh Atid would be smart to offer him a high slot on their list.

Kahane's words, taken out of context and publicized with just the part of pushing a button to make Arabs disappear, caused a bit of a stir, but the above is what he actually said, and there is not really anything wrong with that (even if you disagree with the approach, he isnt saying to destroy the Arabs, he isnt calling for genocide, he is saying a solution to make them go away is only theoretical and realistically we have to find a way to live together)

Kahane in Meron
Matan Kahane (I am not sure what his title is right now - MK? Minister? Deputy Minister?), responsible for overseeing the Meron festivities, just issued a statement in meron, sitting with the police, talking about their responsibilities in preventing people from ruining the festivities while ensuring the safety of the celebrants....
the thing is, I thought they banned food and drink from being served up there... :-)

political violence among the Dati Leumi sector
This situation with MK Betzalel Smotritch (Hatzionut Hadatit), and some others, bothers me.
I understand some people in the Religious Zionism sector are upset at PM Naftali Bennett, Minister Matan Kahane, Minister Ayelet Shaked, and some others. There is nothing wrong with that. They can be upset, they can argue and prefer a different route and a different way to navigate the political situation.
Arguing, disagreeing, is fine. The polarization really bothers me. They are passul because they have taken a different political path and have made decisions I disagree with. That is what I really dont like.
Smotritch said, and others (like MK Rotman) supported him, that they should be chased out of their shuls on Shabbos and the upcoming holidays. They should be rejected and banished.
In response some people are talking big - things like comparing it to Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, causing the destruction of the mikdash, etc. That is too weighty for me.
For me it is just crossing a line into polarization. Who made Betzalel Smotritch the guardian of all shuls and of Judaism? Who is he to say who should be banished from shul? Just like I asked who is MK Gafni to decide who should wear a kipa and who should not when he screamed at Matan Kahane to remove his kipa, who is Smotritch to decide who gets to go to shul and who doesn't? Why are we letting them mix politics and religion, bring politics into the shul? if you stick to my politics I will let you come daven but if you disagree and go a different political path you cannot come daven? Who ever heard of such a vile position? Maybe this is just another sign for the need of more separation of Shul and State. This is just another victim - politicians get to decide who is allowed into shul and who isn't.
And it did not start with this.
Idit Silman was under heavy social pressure, as were others like Nir Orbach, for months, until she eventually flipped last week. Protests outside their houses (which is reasonable), in addition to social banishment, punishing their kids in school and Bnei Akiva youth groups? That is not right and should not be part of the arsenal.
That is pure political violence. This type of polarization should not be a part of our system.
Smotritch's response is basically that people have the right to be upset. Yes, people have the right to be upset, but Smotritch is the one riling them up. Even if some people are upset, they were not chasing these people out of shul, they were not harassing them and their families, not all on their own. They were riled up by the leadership and guided to do these things. That is not "people have the right to be upset". That is Smotritch saying throw them out of shul.
Political violence should be unacceptable no matter which sector it comes from, and the Dati Leumi sector is clearly not immune to it.

The issues I am advancing in the realm of Shul and State could only happen in this type of government, that is not dependent upon the Haredi parties... I am investing a lot of thought in advancing processes that will not be able to be cancelled, even when the Haredim will return to government... the market will be free, and factories and big businesses will want to take kashrut certificates that give them the maximum diversity of clientele, so I think the Badatzim will flourish in the new law.

Who knows - maybe specifically because of this reform of the kashrut system Jews who until now did not eat kosher food, now specifically because of the Rabbanut reforms, will merit to eating kosher!

Many have asked this question, and the thought is generally because of the Haredi jobs that might be lost because of these reforms. I wouldn't go as far as the Admor saying that people who relied on the Rabbanut have eaten treif until now, but the point is the same - and at least according to the Haredi opinion and policy that Rabbanut kashrut cannot be relied upon this is what comes of it...

Kahane must be doing something right
By the old adage that when people at both extremes don't like what you are doing and are upset at you for it you must be doing something right, Minister of Religious Affairs Matan Kahane must be doing something right with his recently announced kashrut reforms.
the one side of the Haredim has been non-stop attacking Kahane and the government for the announced reforms saying that he will destroy the Rabbanut and he will destroy kashrut (MK Gafni even called him Antiochus yesterday). That we are already familiar with.
now coalition member MK Gilad Kariv (Labor) is attacking Kahane from the other end of the spectrum for the same reforms. Kariv is upset upon hearing reports that Kahane is working to plug some holes in the reforms to ensure that non-Orthodox organizations will not benefit from it and be able to start offering kashrut certification services.
According to the old adage mentioned above, Minister Kahane must be doing something right if both Kariv and the Haredi parties are upset and critical of him.

kashrut reforms coming
Minister of Religious Affairs Matan Kahane announced a short while ago that he will be introducing reforms to the kashrut industry. Essentially he will be turning the Rabbanut into a regulator while kashrut is privatized. Basically anyone can give kashrut certification and the Rabbanut will set a variety of standards, and monitor and ensure that the various kashrut organizations live up to the standards it chose to certify with.
Additionally, kashrut organizations will be allowed to certify restaurants that are open and operating on Shabbos, if three municipal rabbis give it permission to operate.
Kahane says there will no longer be a need for double (or more) certification - until now every food or restaurant had to minimally have a Rabbanut hechsher by law, and if they wanted a private hechsher as well, they still had to have the Rabbanut and only above that a private one. Now they will only need to pay for one, and the Rabbanut will be the regulator.

Bennett's people have promoted this idea for a long time, so it is not a surprise.
I do not know what might be wrong with it. Municipal rabbis are appointed by the Rabbanut, so I am not sure what the fear is of giving them power to give kashrut in other cities or to give special permission (such as for opening on Shabbos or for setting different standards).
the only opposition I have heard so far is from the Haredi politicians, but I haven't heard an explanation form them of what is wrong - just that Kahane and Bennett are dismantling the kashrut in Israel. Again, I don't know what is wrong with this arrangement. Anyways, they who oppose the move (so far) don't even rely on the Rabbanut hechsher (and many say it isnt even kosher to begin with), so I am not sure why removing that hechsher and having them regulate other certification standards instead is so bad.
I just dont get the argument against giving too much power or authority to rabbis appointed by the Rabbanut instead of leaving that power centralized by the Rabbanut. if you think the Rabbanut should hold the power, what is so bad about the rabbis the Rabbanut appointed? The same argument is used when discussing changes to the conversion system, and I dont understand the complaint there either.
the big issue I think is that I dont see who will step in to replace the Rabbanut and give basic kashrut certification. The competition will be to say I am the best mehadrin hechsher, not I give the basic kashrut level. And this might be the end of non-glatt meat, among other things
