Knesset Votes Against public Transportation on Shabbos

A precursor of things to come....

If anybody thinks it is going to be easy, or even possible, in the near future to pass a law or resolution to begin operation of public transportation on Shabbos, need only look at yesterday's Knesset vote to understand how this attempt will go down.

Yesterday Meretz tried to propose a law allowing the operation of public transportation on Shabbos. Without any threats from the religious parties, without any great fanfare, the Knesset voted against the proposed law. Even the Labor party did not support the bill.  (source: Ynet and Ladaat)

Some who voted against perhaps are aware of the political problems that might arise should they support it, while others voted against it on principle believing it to be a bad move for social reasons or out of respect for Shabbos even if they don't keep it themselves.

Tel Aviv might have passed an initial resolution hoping to get their buses moving on Shabbos, but they can look at yesterday's Knesset vote as a precursor of what to expect when their issue comes up for discussion.
