Lakewood Gvirim Have Had Enough Of Drunk Collectors On Purim

According to a report on Bechadrei (can anyone from Lakewood confirm this?), some Haredi businessmen from Lakewood have had enough with the drunkenness that goes on during Purim and are trying to put a stop to it.

According to the report, these businessmen have published a letter directed to the roshei yeshiva and organization administrators that send boys out on Purim to collect tzedaka for their yeshiva/organization stating that anybody who is drunk when they come to the door will not be allowed in to the house and no money will be donated to the organization represented by those boys.

They say that every years tens of yeshiva boys and avreichim come collecting and they are often drunk "as Lot", they vomit everywhere, they are wild, and they break valuables in the house without even realizing, without apologizing, without paying for the damage. This, they said, is not the way of the Torah and is not the mitzva of Purim.

Bechadrei also says that one of the local Lakewood gvirim has said he would leave Lakewood for Purim and go to his son's house in Monsey just to avoid having to let in the drunk boys and the damage they cause. This fellow told Bechadrei that he will give his matanos l'evyonim in Monsey this year instead of in Lakewood and will send big checks to his regular institutions in Lakewood that normally come to his house.

That's a shame. he has the ability to teach them the lesson he is trying to teach, and tell them he will not give unless they commit to straightening out their boys/collectors. Instead he is running away but awarding them without making them actually do anything.

  1. I believe that this should be a lesson for RBSA. The hordes of drunken yeshiva boys not only disturb the peace and cause all sorts of dangers but also take badly needed funds from our local institutions.
Perhaps we should send the same message! Don't encourage this behavior by rewarding them with donations.

  2. Rafi, this was posted last week http://www.thelakewoodscoop.com/news/2012/02/readers-scoop-i-will-not-donate-to-any-drunk-bachurim-this-purim.html
this is a phenomenon that has started already a few years ago, I personally know many people not just gevirim who will not give $$ to drunk bochrim nor will they allow buchrim in their house to drink.

Er, Rafi, surely it is the job of the ראשי ישיבות to educate their charges - and the role of the גבירים to donate?

Or have social mores changed to such a degree in Lakewood in recent years?

  6. Good for them! The strict policy in every zoo is "Don't feed the animals." If these people are going to act like animals, then everything but tochachah and medical attention should be withheld from them.

    Purim Sameach.
