Accent - Ki Lo Ta'azov (Psalm 16 in Hebrew) (video)
We proudly present this setting of two verses from Psalm 16 in honor of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Translated to English:
"For you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."
כי ׀ לא־תעזב נפשי לשאול לא־תתן חסידך לראות שחת
תודיעני ארח חיים שבע מחות את־פניך נעמות בימינך נצח
There is a heartwarming backstory to this project. About a year ago, we arranged and recorded the Israeli National Anthem, "Hatikvah". Not long after, we were contacted by Daniel Epstein in Switzerland with an idea. Daniel's father, Ludwig Esptein, was the son of a cantor and had composed this piece for choir. The choral version is still sung in the Zurich synagogue. Daniel asked if he could commission us to arrange and record his father's piece in our style. We were pleased that our rendition of "Hatikvah" was so favorably received around the world, and this project seemed like the perfect follow-up. In "Ki Lo Ta'azov," as with the lyrics of "Hatikvah," we appreciate the juxtaposition of severity and promise; of gravity and hope.
