Interesting Psak: return to Israel for election day or cancel trip

Last year Rav Chaim Kanievsky told a rosh yeshiva to cancel a fundraising trip as the arrival of Mashiach was imminent. In recent years, Rav Kanievsky has spoken more than a few times about the near arrival of the Mashiach.

In an interesting psak Rav Chaim Kanievsky has now cancelled another Rosh yeshiva's fundraising trip.. but not for Mashiach.

Rav Betzalel Toledano asked Rav Kanievsky if he should make sure to return to Israel in the middle of his coming fundraising in order to vote in the elections for UTJ. When Rav Kanievsky said that he must return in the middle of his trip and then can travel again to continue fundraising, Rav Toledano protested saying that the trips are very difficult for him, it will cause him to be weak or ill, and he might even lose money because of it.

Rav Kanievsky was not impressed with his protests and responded that he should make sure to come back during his trip, and if the travel is too difficult for him then it is better to cancel the trip entirely so as not to miss the elections.

Besides for the psak itself,  also interesting is that rav toledano,  a sefardi rosh yeshiva of a sefardi yeshiva asked rav kanievsky rather than rav shalom Cohen or another sefardi rav.  And that the question is based on him voting utj rather than shas.

  1. This whole discussion was just for show. Rav Toledano had two months to ask his shaila until now. It's to make Ashkenazi voters think that if Rav Toledano can cancel his trip abroad then they can spend the 30 minute detour in their ordinary day to go vote.

Shas voters have a different mentality, or at least Shas thinks so. They aren't expected to value their own time in such a manner that they might consider skipping the voting booth.

  2. Rav Toledano learned in Gateshead and Brisk. Most Toledanos learned with Rav Shach. They are clearly in the Gimel camp. No shas for them.
