seventy faces to the Torah

The Jewish social media world is hot right now discussing Miriam Anzovin's reviews of the pages of daf yomi she is learning.

Here is one example, though this one is on the "low key" end of the spectrum of her video reviews:

Miriam's irreverence doesn't bother me. I personally have a distaste for foul language (except in perhaps small amounts and appropriately placed) so this bothered me a bit (this clip does not have any foul language but some are riddled with it) but not because it was foul language on a holy topic but because I just cringe at foul language. I think her style is mostly fine and if her audience learns something from it in that style, great. Everyone has their own approach to Torah study and whatever does it for her and her audience and because of that they study more and become more knowledgeable in Torah and Judaism, great. There are seventy faces to the Torah. She is exposing one we haven't really seen before.

  1. Seventy is a limit. It serves to exclude more than it includes.

  2. Sorry, no. Foul language is a very bad middah, and indeed an issur of nivul peh. Someone who gives a "shiur" peppered with foul language is not giving Torah.

    1. Alas, that's the way people of her generation speak.

    2. That's a pretty big generalization.

  3. Well watching her is like when you pass an accident scene and you know you really shouldn't stop and gawk, well that's what I feel like.
I don't have ticktock, so I checked out her YouTube channel.
There is one video she has that's not daf related, and its really funny.
It's about creating a millenial "Elders of Zion" its a great parody!

  4. BTW,, I have watched a couple more of her videos and while they still might be considered irreverent, they did not include profanity. I am wondering if the one video that got publicized was an anomaly regarding the use of profanity.

    1. Well even those that don't have profanity still have so much irreverence and disrespect for the tanaaim and amoroim. It's a little more then just crossing the "red" line.

    2. Although I don't deny going back there occasionally to check out more of the "crash scene gore".(I'm referencing my own metaphor).☺
